  • There is a lot of great material here-- a consistent theme that I noticed was a careful attention to expressive performance that isn't overly snapped to a tyrannical grid. Really lovely writing throughout and consistently great instrumental and compositional choices that kept me interested the whole way through. Good work on keeping the music itself varied too-- I was a bit concerned that the style wasn't going to quite vary enough, but then "Origins" begins with that beautiful cello solo and pizz. strings just bounding along and I found myself smiling. The opening track too is notable for its quiet, restrained beauty-- the piano avoids over-quantization and a wonderfully rubato human performance, which I think is key for what you are going for. The music in "In the Middle of Bubbles" made me smile because of its beauty. I see that you are intending for this to be implemented by cutting up these tracks into loops, which is a great thing to have in mind from the very beginning. In this case there is a lot of material that can be used to do that, and I think the result would work very well. I do, however, feel like there should still probably be a bit more material in each track, and each track should be shaped a little more to tell its own individual story, as these aspects tend to really help out the implementation process by presenting a "one true canonical version" of each tracks' story that is just a bit more extended than what is presented here. Still, that's a great bit of feedback to get-- I loved it so much that I'd like to hear even more!

Description
Hi everyone ! Here is my submission for OST Composing Jam #7. If you're interested, I made a little story below that image the moods of the tracks. Enjoy!

The type of the Game:

It is a 2D atmospheric platformer (inspiration: GRIS).

Compositional aspects:

In game, each track would be divided into a few loops that would change accordingly to zones, situations or cinematics happening.

Synopsis:

An amnesic little girl, wanting to discover more about her and her origins, begins a journey through a colorful world full of bubbles.

Tracks:

1. "In the Middle of Bubbles"
This is the beginning of the journey through this strange world filled with floating and illuminated bubbles . They sound like carillons and seem to lead the little girl through her progression.
2. "Where no Bubble dares to dwell"
The little girl lost herself in this damp and dark place where neither light nor bubble are allowed. She encounters a strange man that shows her the way out.
3. "Interlude"
4. "Origins"
The little girl feels that the end of the journey is near and that she will soon find answers to all her questions. The bubbles are all around her, guiding her toward a human shape in the horizon.

Very nice compositions! I really like the vibrato on that cello (?) in "Where No Bubble Dares To Dwell" aswell as the dynamics. Keep up the good work! :)

Developer

Yes it is a cello! Thank you, I tried to humanize it as much as I could and I'm quite happy with the result!

Very beautiful tracks! The moments of silence give a lot to the ambience, for me personally it gives the feeling that the music is literally speaking :) Love the mix, orchestration and the choice of instruments. Great work!

Developer

Thank you a lot :D

Really impressed by the restraint in these tracks. They gently take you by the hand and guide you along a journey rather than smashing you in the face. They take their time and let things develop. One of the more interesting and unique entries I've heard with a lot of artistry. Some minor feedback is the end of "Where no bubble dares to dwell" doesn't give me the sense of following a strange man showing the way out.

Also, a shout-out to the beautiful string harmonizing in "origins." Thanks for making and sharing these beautiful tracks.

Thank you for listening! I tried to  embody the man in "Where no bubble dares to dwell" with the solo Cello!

Love the very subtle ambiance found throughout the tracks, such as the beginning of Where no Bubble dares to dwell. Despite being so hidden, it adds so much. The piano arrangements feel so thought out and emotional. The strings hardly sound synthesized. Your intended vibe has been achieved phenomenally!

Developer

Thank you very much for this heart-warming return!!

Really beautiful OST, reminded me a lot of Debussy and Satie. The change of tone with 'Origins' was surprising and nice to listen to, and overall, the way you bring together various instruments around the piano was very tastefully done. Great job!

Developer

I love Debussy so I guess it must have shown out x)

That chord at 1:02 in the first track is super satisfying. I'm a fan of the jazz-tinged influences and overall this submission feels like it could've come straight out of a popular indie game. Great work!

Developer

Thank you!!

You know how to use silence. The dynamics you've achieved... It seems as if the sounds are peeking out from the darkness. Your composition is very beautiful.

Developer

I really love to use respirations and silence!! Thanks :D

In the Middle of Bubbles has got to be my most favorite incorporation of the underwater fantasy theme. I can't get over how well its instruments gave off the eeriness, largeness, and beauty of an underwater world. Bells are a wonderful instrument and the first entrance of the piano really shook me deep :). I'm cheering for your protagonist to find her answers!!

Developer

I'm really happy that you liked how I envisionned the bubbles!! That was really fun to do :D

oh WOW I was blown away by the first track. I was immediately immersed by the metallic sounds leading me through a mysterious world, and the combination of emotional strings and felt pianos had me in shivers! It NAILED the vibes of curiosity so well!...

...And then your soundtrack transitions to TENSION. I can easily imagine that powerful cello to represent the mysterious man and him leading both the protagonist and the player deeper into the shadows, however, we both know that the only way out of this dark situation, is forwards.

and the Felt Piano is BACK! and I LOVE IT! (I think it's a felt piano? haha sorry if I'm wrong). Great use of the sounds and melodies from before to give the listener a breath right before the next song! Origins was everything I wanted to hear after the tension from Where No Bubble Dares to Dwell.  Just like how the little girl gets her answers and finds her way back home in the story, you brought me to resolution in real life musically. Very well made soundtrack!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! It as always a pleasure to know that our musical intentions made their way to the listener!

I used a Piano VST called "Noire", It is my favourite by far!

There's so much atmosphere and emotion packed into these pretty pieces of pure grace and beauty :3 They are perfect for the game setting you described, and would really elevate the storytelling elements of the game, infusing them with warmth and wonder!

Developer(+1)

Really happy that you had the time to listen to my work! Thank you for those kind words, I took a lot of pleasure composing this for the jam and I am happy to know other like it!

The piano theme is very nice - I was hoping someone did something with subtle pads and a deep, slow, dramatic piano! Nice!

Developer

really happy to meat your expectations!

One highlight for the entire soundtrack is the first song how it calm it sounds with the bells, how it starts building up with the piano then finally shows the full emotion with the strings, a very touching and charming song, that left a great first impression of the soundtrack being the ambient and emotional theme fitting for the game. peak sound design right here.

Developer

Thank you very much for this kind return!

Great soundtrack with very touching and emotional instrumentation !
I really liked the piano playing and sound on the different tracks (especially on the first two tracks which were my favourites overall), it really conveys the range of emotions you wanted to convey, so great job !

Developer(+1)

I found this image so evocative that it inspired me this storyline, thank you for listening!

Submitted(+1)

Oh my god. Just the intimate nature of this soundtrack is so great, not to mention your instrument choice and smooooooth chords. Totally can hear the Gris inspiration! I think you did an amazing job, loved every second of it!!

(also i love your bearded dragon pfp)

Beautiful sound design, lovely piano work. I love the depth of emotion you achieved with such a limited pool of instruments, especially in "Where No Bubble Dares to Dwell." A very enjoyable listen overall, excellent work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the emotions through my musics!

Submitted(+1)

I love how beautiful the instruments sound, especially the piano and strings! The way you incorporated made your tracks feel full of emotion, and your music goes along well with the stories. If anything, it enhances them and helps the listener get pulled into a world that you created!

Developer

I thought it was really interesting to compose with the story and the picture always in mind!
