Super nice visuals. Really nice job with this one, it's quite fun to play. My main criticism is there isn't enough feedback upon playing the notes, so it can get a bit confusing. Really loving the music too, track two is especially a banger!

Submitted

I dunno, I'm not feeling this one. Maybe my computer is just too old, but I had a really choppy experience that never quite clicked with me. On the Web version, the soundtrack and the notes became really desynced, too, so I barely managed to get a 25% hit rating. It was better in the Windows version, but I came across a bunch of weird little glitches. After the first song was done, it would immediately start a new round with no music and no notes. I'd press Escape, but it just froze the game without showing any kind of pause menu?

Developer(+2)

Hard to say what the issue is, the game certainly is a bit more gpu demanding that other submissions here just by the nature of everything we're doing.

One thing to note with the audio/video sync we tried to limit ourselves to using the unity audio system, but this is actually a big hindrance to us, as it's not good for doing exact audio/video sync on most platforms and at best our current solution is a hack.

As for the pause feature, yes it's just a pause functionality we didn't have time to flesh out a pause menu for the jam release unfortunately. As for the game restarting after the end of the song we never hit this issue, it should go straight to the results screen. Perhaps there a bug triggered by lower performance on lower end machines causing issues.

In any case we're looking at doing some updates after the rating period is over to fix a lot of the issues with the initial release but that doesn't really help out with the jam version.

Thanks for the feedback!

Developer

I am sorry to hear that... We tried adding a pause menu but we should have definitely prioritized it much sooner, because we had run out of time. Audio syncing issues were something we had to deal with early on but we had dealt with most of the bugs,
If you don't mind me asking, what browser did you try on? What's your CPU/GPU? With WebGL, the game is single-threaded so a modern CPU helps a lot with the stuff we are calculating,

Way too hard but really impressive

Developer

Lol, Thanks! Easy-mode coming soon!

Hey, you stole my idea! Just kidding, this looks awesome. A bit too hard for me (I suck at this), but great job, very impressive for a 1-week project!

Developer

Yes... we took your idea and ran with it lol,
Thanks though! 1-week projects like this are a fun challenge,

Great visuals and truly a game worthy of the name rhythm game! The default controls you have chosen (i used keyboard) felt pretty intuitive! The menu looks really nice and polished, so does the intro with your logo! To give some feedback: For me it was hard to distinguish in the heat of the moment what kind of feedback I received (Awesome, great, ...), maybe give the different types of feedback different colors to make them easier distinguishable? To sum it up: Great entry! If you were to add some more easier songs (or the announced easy mode) you could probably put this as it is on Steam!

Thanks for the feedback! I think you'll be happy with some of the changes we're rolling out for V2 of the game. We've taken a bit of a break from development but I've started gathering feedback from this comments section and implementing them.
The choice for single-color notes and accuracy feedback was an aesthetic one, but I can understand that it makes feedback hard to interpret. So we're looking into that for the upcoming version,

Very nice, visuals are good but movements sometimes are a bit too fast (confused me a lot).

I would have loved to have a note hit sound effect when notes are hit with good timing, I think it helps in making the player feel he is really "Inside" the song. Anyway nice job!

Developer

I am glad to hear you enjoyed it!
We're toning down the movement a bit for the next version. Our original plan was to sync the movement with the songs, so it would have held more purpose and hopefully been less confusing.
And yes, sound effects definitely help with auditory feedback, so we will look into that for the upcoming version!

Very cool game. I found the normal difficulty quite challenging though and I think it would be good to have clearer feedback for hits/misses.

Splines look really good but can feel a bit nauseating when playing for a long time, I think gentler curves would be better.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! Gentler curves are a great suggestion, we will definitely tone it down, and keep harder curves to a minimum. I think I got used to them during development lol.

Pretty fun game, I definitely enjoyed it! I did encounter a bug on the web version, though, it didn't appear on the windows version. When I turned on alternate controls, all of the songs just end immediately after starting. Other than that bug, I was able to still have a great time and 5 star all songs, definitely looking forward to any updates this game has in the future!

Developer

Oh, thanks for letting us know. I can look into this asap and, we'll fix it as soon as the competition has been judged :)

How the heck did you make that scarf like movement, it's awesome!

Sometimes it was a bit hard to read the notes when it was going left and right, but that's a super cool effect, I could see it used when a song is building up, bringing the scarf in the sky then during the drop it could suddenly go down like a rollercoaster. The camera should have other focus mode I think that might help with the visibility in certain parts.

Lot of potential!

We used splines for the 3d track movement, specifically this asset: https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/utilities/dreamteck-splines-61926

Original plan was to have the track be able to move with events in the song but we didn't have time to implement that fully.

The amount of polish in the bad boy is pretty crazy. I'm glad there is an easy mode coming, because I am garbage at rhythm games.

I don't know if it would screw with the aesthetics too much, but I think different colored notes would help differentiate them and make it a bit easier to pick them out.

Really great work! Thanks for making it!!!

Developer

Thanks! We're so glad to hear you enjoyed it,

YES, easy mode is coming. Our charters worked overtime to get the charts in but we're definitely expanding the difficulty section.

And our colors are customizable. It was definitely a design choice to go with one color. But now that the game is finished we'll revisit that choice!

[Played on the Windows build]

Pretty fun 4-key game, with lots of polish all around.

However, two issues I encountered were that the notes seemed to be just a bit too early compared to the music at all times, so Iā€™d have to consciously play a little later to hit notes on time. The other issue is that combo (counter, not multiplier) and the percentage you get at the end of the song seems to carry over between songs, causing inflated(?) scores.

Note speed options would also be appreciated, but this default speed worked well enough.

Developer (1 edit)

Hey! Thanks for trying out the game!

Yeah we noticed the combo bug too late. When we're testing we just played one song at a time, and then back to the editor to add or fix stuff. It's already fixed locally though, so let's hope to add it in soon,

Note speed and calibration are configurable but, we didn't have an options menu prioritized. We will add those in though!

Really lovely title, gameplay feels like a finished release. Only things I wished for are a note speed slider, rebindable controls and some sound effects for hitting and holding notes. Really good job, I wouldn't expect nothing less from a dev behind clone hero ;)

Developer

Thanks! I mentioned in a few replies that, those are all things we also would have loved to add! They'll come soon!
