Awesome game! Love the book scanning mechanic and level layout. never know whats gonna be around any of the corners.. Great voice acting and the sfx really immerse you into the experience.. definitely scary!
Thanks for checking the game out! Glad you liked it!
this was really cool! i was upset the ghost wasn't just helping me put the books back where they go, like i've got a job to do and the ghost isn't helping yuh know lol. some issues i had were the ghost could hurt you through walls, maybe just a doing a ray check to make sure it can actually see you would fix that, and the speed at which you lose health was very high (although i'm not sure but there might be some magic pixel funny business going on with the health to help you survive when it's super low, if so good polish on that). it was a really fun experience overall, great job on this ya'll!
yes the health through walls thing was giving me a bit of grief but didnt have enough time to fix it, i think it can only nick you around corners right? in the 0.1.4 version i panicked because i didn't realise the hitbox for the ghost could get you through an entire bookshelf! thought i fixed it but noticed it while other people played 😭 that's something i need to trial-and-error out of the next version. there are raycast checks constantly but i must've missed something with the health vs scare prerequisites😂
aha yes there's a little buffer zone around 1 HP to give you a little extra fight, and its tuned for about 2-3 "scares" before death, 1 felt unfair and any more kinda ruins the fear effect.
man thank you so much for your feedback, and thanks for checking the game out!
I love it. The game design simple and well thought... enough to scare me a loooooooot, and give me extreme anxiety, which is fine by me. DAMN I am even struggling to write!
hahah awesome man - that's about the highest honor a scary game can get 😂🎃 Thanks for checking it out!
Thoughtful game design, i think it reinforces the experience quite nicely!~
i appreciate the feedback, thanks for playing! 🎃
10 books returned is going to be my record. I like the concept and the story.
Thanks for checking the game out, glad you enjoyed it! YOU CAN DO 20!
Good game, I enjoyed it. I think you could reduce the number of books by half and compensate for it with an increase in the ghost’s speed. The first 3 books are scary, but once you start understanding how the ghost works, the fear fades. You could add some variety to the mechanic, for example, by having the player blink with a cooldown. In the later stages, the ghost could, when out of sight, have a chance to teleport to a random area in the library to break the player’s control over it. Overall, the game turned out great. Keep it up!
this is great feedback, i was kinda thinking the same thing! i appreciate the honesty.
"breaking the players control over it" is exactly what i've been mulling over in my mind for the last few days. i want to avoid teleports so it stays "fair" but maybe i could reroute the enemy in unpredictable ways after a while so you don't actually know which way it'll approach..
also im thinking of adding a map of the library to the scanning area, because i think most people will use it, and then learn the mechanics of the ghost movement a lot quicker (also it'll be borderline useless late game anyway haha), the only way i can bring back that fear at the moment is by increasing speed, but i need to work out how to subvert the users expectations without straight up being unfair hahah.
awesome ideas man and again, appreciate the honesty! your game has been my favorite so far!
Really solid horror game!
thank you for checking it out!
I first thought that I was cheesing the game by skipping the scanning part and running around trying every shelf lol, took me a while to realize how the ghost moves, it is a good idea to lure it away by crouching... enjoyed it very much, got really tense the last couple of books :D
hahah people have complained about the book getting stuck on shelves sometimes but this is EXACTLY why i haven't gotten rid of it 😂
ANTI CHEESE TECH ENGAGED
thanks for checking it out, glad you liked it!
I liked the concept' There is a real tension as we shelve the books. Goog job !
thank you for checking it out! i'm going to steal the line "tension as we shelve the books" 😂🎃
I got my pants dirty a couple of times...))
no shame in that, i still scare myself CONSTANTLY when i play 😂 thanks a tonne for checking it out!
This is gets tough and the scare got me good. Might try and beat this later, btw I would hide the non jam file because I mistakenly downloaded that first.
Oh true, thanks for letting me know 🙏 You'll get it, it's not super hard - once you start to remember where the shelves are it becomes much easier!
Appreciate the feedback and I'm glad you liked it! 🎃 Happy jam!
Really neat game. Loved the whole vibe and mechanics of being a librarian placing books on shelves. Some really clever mechanics there.
I wish it wasn't so hard! But then again I could just suck at the game :)
Awesome little game.
hahah it is pretty difficult i'll admit 😂 it's hard balancing fun with challenge in such a short time frame! great jam so far, your game is next!
Tell me about it! The balancing is one of the hardest things to get right I think.
I do think you should just make a library sim game though. For some unknown reason it was so relaxing and fun putting books on the correct shelf! 😂
hahah maybe ill add a difficulty setting for cozy gamers 😂 glad you enjoyed, thanks for checking it out!
Very solid gameplay. I was really at edge during the last books. I especially liked the panic the foot steps enduced! The phone calls are a nice touch.
First game I tried this Jam and already a banger.
haha thanks man, it was hard to tune that number in. originally 16 was the limit but ive gotten as high as 30 (its gets so freaking hard around 25 if you keep playing 😂)
Just a great all round game! Got really solid mechanics, story, and sound design. Not gonna lie the ghost got me the first time! Played it a few times once I got the hang of the mechanics. Only thing I noted was that it might be cool to have something more ghostly in place of the footsteps but that is a really minor thing. Overall my favourite game so far! Really cool.
i was also wondering what noise i could have used instead of the footsteps but didn't decide in time so just kept it hahah
glad you liked it and thanks for the comment! i really enjoyed your one too, so did the boys watching on discord 😂
the sound design is really good! the mechanics also works and the concept is unique. great job!
thanks mate! glad you liked it. i tried to make it hard but not TOO hard.
I loved the game! Especially the fact that it gets more and more complicated with each book you play.
some people missed that it gets faster with every book, maybe i need a clue on the wall like in your game? 🤔 glad you liked it!
Cool concept! Sound design was great and controls were solid! I liked the tension buildup when progressing through the game.
Nice job!
thank you! the tension is about all i focused on 😂 didnt have enough time to work in a crazy story or anything!
Hey just wanted to say that your game has probably the *best game design I've seen in this jam. What I mean by that is that the mechanics work really well and were very finely tuned. I also especially loved the sound design.
Even though I wasn't really scared and the ambiance was not the best ever I did put five star in enjoyment lol (that's how much I like the concept)
*spoilers ahead*
I finished the game twice (how come I didn't get a special ending by escaping with the secret book!!!??)
Loved it thx
thank you, i'm glad you like it! ohhh that is an awesome idea! next version! also i'd love to add more voice lines too and extend the story perhaps! Also, if you want a REAL challenge, you can continue to play even after the door unlocks hahaha
My high score is
2630!😎I added the secret ending for the steam version! great idea hahah
Very cool game ! Very effective sound design !
thank you!
Another Godot game! Great visuals and an interesting idea. Liked how developed your options menu was as well.
I found it a bit frustrating how (I'm guessing) the book could get caught on a shelf, causing it to drop. I often didn't notice right and had to back track a bit looking for it. The book pick up area was a bit small as well. I also found the game a bit repetitive and stopped after shelving a ~6 books. Is it just the one enemy? Did I miss some gameplay elements by stopping early?
Overall pretty solid.
yes! the enemy speeds up after every book, it gets quite challenging by 20, you can even keep going after 20 lol, my absolute limit is 26 but it gets REALLY hard by then. thank you for the feedback! i'll take it on board for the next version 🙏🙏
