Just finished your game, it's really cool, one of the entry I enjoyed the most in this Jam. Was a bit sad to see it ending so brutally but I can completely understand this knowing it's made in only 7 days. Honnestly I feel like your ranking was a bit harsh.

Anyway, I personally really enjoyed your game :)

Developer(+1)

thank you so much for trying it out, super glad you enjoyed it! i made some decisions that i knew would lower the rank like making it very difficult and not having checkpoints, so honestly i'm totally okay with where it ended up but i do still really appreciate the sentiment. getting a high rating in a jam is nice but i mostly enter these to experiment with new ideas in a place where i know i can receive genuine feedback from other creators in the form of comments. that said i am currently outlining plans to continue this since i'm very happy with how the main mechanic came out and based on comments it's the one part everyone seems to agree is good so hopefully there will
eventually be a version that doesn't end so abruptly lol

Good game. The controls and combat are pleasant. But the progression between levels is strange. I would also add abilities to the player at new levels. It's a pity there are no checkpoints, stuck at level 3.

Developer(+1)

thanks for the feedback! yeah, level 3 is the hard one for sure. the only real hint i can give is to save the pie until you need it. otherwise just gotta hit those dodges and be careful with your bar. thank you so much for trying it out and i’m glad you enjoyed it despite getting stuck!

Great dungeon crawler! Smooth but fast 90 degree movement, love the cursor combat mechanic. Nice graphics and sound gives good ambience. I always get lost in this type of game, but that's my fault for having no sense of direction! :D

Developer(+1)

thank you so much for trying it and for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it! i've had some other reports of people getting lost, it's totally because of the one wallpaper per floor and no landmarks. if i make it into a full thing i'll be able to alleviate both of those easily, but i do wish during the jam i had had the time to add a landmark or two

Submitted(+1)

Sounds like a good plan! Hope it goes well.

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! I like the haunted house via old school PC dungeon crawler idea. Very challenging though.

Developer

thank you for trying it out and for the feedback!

What kind of coffee have you all been taking to make these in only 6 days, damn. The combat system and monster designs  are dope, my only nitpick is that it's too easy to get lost, but that's probably just me having the spatial orientation skills of a drunken starfish.

Developer(+1)

no that's totally because the walls have one texture and there are no landmarks lol. i tried to make the rooms have distinct shapes, but specifically for level 3 which is the most labyrinthine and easy to get lost in that was purposefully built to be a hedge maze. it's just a shame they sort of all ended up being a hedge maze. still it means a lot you liked the rest cause i really enjoyed yours too!

A nice "Cthulhu" Dungeon Crawler. The combat mechanics are solid, it took me a bit to get use to them, especially I kept forgetting that I could move the cursor to aim. It is really hard. The pumpkin / scare crows in level2 can one shot you even if you are almost full health, better try to shoot them fast.

A very good game.

Developer

thank you for trying it and for the feedback!

The dungeon crawler fits well with the horror atmosphere. Great job.

Developer(+1)

thank you!

Submitted(+1)

Liked the combat, maybe rethink a little bit the  keywords, i didnt like that , buts thats just my opinion. Besides that really liked the game, the designs where marvelous!!!!

Developer

i'm not sure what you mean by keywords, but i'm glad you enjoyed it otherwise!

Man, I know the 1st and 2nd layouts by heart after so many attempts. I'm really sorry, but after 5-6 tries, I still couldn't find the yellow key on the 3rd level. I would have loved to go further, the aesthetics are great. Maybe you've added it later in the game, but I think it's missing a few mechanics, especially related to the gun. If you had more time to polish, you could have added a menu and a fancy UI. Otherwise, you definitely nailed the graphics. I loved how the atmosphere gets weirder the further you go. On a side note I think for a game jam adding respawn points at each stage could make the experience easier for testers.

Developer(+1)

i was thinking about restarting people at the beginning of the level instead of the whole game, specifically for the reason you say of making it easier for people to get through, but i ended up deciding to just stick to the difficulty i had in mind even if it meant lower ratings or less people trying it. i wanted it to be oppressive, i wanted it to be a huge relief to see the key lime pies and without a real threat i don't think it would've felt like how i wanted it to. the 3rd level specifically is the hardest one in there. it's very large and there's a single key lime pie. i would've loved to have gussied up the ui and stuff, but when i ask myself would my time be better spent making the game better or building out a nice looking ui, i usually just end up deciding to make the ui functional instead of pretty. thank you so much for the feedback and for going back in multiple times to try it again, that really means a lot!

Submitted(+1)

and you were right, i had much fun playing this game and the UI is just bonus :) I might give it another try later so I can get past the 3rd level ahah
thank you !

Really cool gameplay and aesthetic. I like this game

Developer

thank you for trying it out, glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Interesting concept and great atmosphere. Cool monster design too!

Might just be me, but I would like to be able to use the mouse left clic and right clic to slash and shoot in combat (instead of z and c), I'm struggling a bit to move the cursor with wasd at the same time haha

Developer(+1)

the controls were an initial design decision about trying to make the game fit onto an nes controller. i knew it would be a little off putting to some people but i decided to stick with it, i felt like it added to the oppressive feel i was going for while keeping it simple enough to be understood quickly. i do understand where you're coming from though, especially since one of the weapons is a gun and it would be easier to aim with a mouse but if i were to continue it i would still try to keep the controls super limited like in this version (i did also end up having to add an extra button anyway though lol). thank you for the feedback, it really means a lot!

Submitted(+1)

The creature design is genuinely disturbing! Would love to see this expanded upon for a bigger game

Developer

that means a lot coming from you, ya'll's game turned out great. i'm mulling over whether to expand on it or not. i'll be measuring out the time and assets it'll take to make a full version here soon but my initial guess is that it's not very much so i will probably be making it into something more complete. thank you so much for trying it out!

Submitted(+1)

It was fun to play! Interesting combat system, cool monsters. And it's well balanced, levels length, amount of monsters, their power - all good.

Developer

thank you, very glad you liked it! about half the jam time was spent on balancing numbers and getting the ui right so i'm glad it comes through

Submitted(+1)

Interesting combat I haven't seen before! I took a decent amount of damage before I realised you can dodge while reloading if you conserve stamina properly. Solid foundation :)

Developer(+1)

thank you for the feedback! i didn't have a great system for tutorialization so even though i picked up on people not knowing about the dodge while reloading thing during playtests i still didn't have a good way to actually tell players that by the end of the jam. i'm glad you figured it out and i'm hopeful others will too

Submitted(+1)

i loved this dungeon crawler, I would say that of all the games I've played in the jam, this is one of my favourites, mainly because of the combat.

Developer

that means a whole lot, thank you so much!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, this is really awesome. I love the tank-style controls that feel restrictive — it adds a sense of atmosphere and hopelessness. The art design is very atmospheric yet minimalistic. The first time I died because I was still figuring out the game mechanics, but on my second attempt, I made it to level three. And by the way, I was pleasantly surprised that there are several levels with different designs, which was really cool! I really enjoyed the game, and I don’t see any major critical flaws. The game feels very cohesive.

Developer(+1)

thank you for the feedback! i expected people to die pretty early their first time and was just hoping that it was good enough people would be willing to give it a second go so i really appreciate that.

Submitted(+1)

That’s exactly what happened. I died, but I was really interested in figuring out the combat mechanics and seeing new monsters. It was nice to see that new monsters appear with their own little mechanics, different from the previous ones. By the way, I was killed by a monster on the third level, the one that attacks very slowly!

Developer(+1)

he is the most sneaky of them all and does the most damage, during playtests my friend would wait for some of the meter to build and then just frantically slam the button to kill it before it got a chance to attack them. the knife has an extra feature that's hard to notice in that it's damage ramps up with each hit in a short time window, so if you fill the blue bar up and spam it you can do about 10 damage which is more than 2 gun shots.

Submitted(+1)

I literally dealt with that monster the same way! I was just smashing the spacebar like a madman, hoping to dodge its attack X). As for the knife mechanic, I didn’t know about that, but it’s interesting! I did exactly what you said — I waited for the stamina bar to fill up and then unleashed a thousand cuts on the enemy. But that monster still managed to catch me!

Submitted(+1)

I wasn't expecting it to be a turn based grid system, thats pretty cool. Nice work!

Developer

i'm glad you liked it!

Hee-ho. I have a problem with downloading the game - win defender doesn't allow to save the file saying there is a virus. Probably you may try to rebuild it somehow or make a web version?

Developer

i checked it out, apparently it is an issue with packing the pck file into the exe, thanks for reporting that! i remade the build and reuploaded, hopefully it works okay now.
