Congratulations on your first game! This oozes charm - quite literally - and I like the personality embedded in the strange environments and characters you've created. The sprite work is great and ekes out an unique style which is important for a creator to have. The dark but cutsey humour seals it entirely! Keep on creating!

Thanks for submitting Pip and the Pastel Hell to the jam!

Developer

Thank you so much for taking the time to come play and comment~ You must be really busy. XD I really poured myself into this project. Both my time and sleep deprivation, but also my personal humor and my burgeoning love of "Punk" art. Make, make it fast, put it out, don't give a damn. XP

Nice and enjoyable. It was a good experience!

Developer

Thank you muchly~

Congrats for the creativity! Always fun to hop around as a little blob haha

The pastel colors were a bit harsh on the eyes, but that was the only thing, it makes for a fun game :)

Developer

Thanks~ I really poured myself into there, and held myself back at the same time. XD I really wanted to go full rainbow vomit, but was concerned about how long it would need to be looked at by people who might not like that. I didn't want to go full Post Void, but... I wanted to tread that line. XP Thanks for playing!

Fantastic! I don't think I've ever played a better "first game" before. Loved the whacky, sorta uncomfortable art style, reminded me of Cruelty Squad a lot, and great animations! Super unique. And it was really funny! The elevator scene made me chuckle. Had strong Undertale vibes to it. Well done!

My only feedback would be to (possibly, because it works fine without it) include a small interact popup, so you know when you're able to talk or inspect things a little easier. Could also be diegetic, like Pip changes expressions, shape or does a little dance to minimize UI clutter, which you've done an amazing job of.

Developer(+1)

That's a huge compliment... thank you so much. I was pretty nervous about making a game... I've tried a few different game engines and nothing has stuck before this. A comparison to Cruelty Squad makes me happier than you could imagine. XD I'm so glad the humor landed, I worked pretty hard on that.

Oh! That would be really easy to implement... great idea! I'll consider what might be a nice diegetic way of doing that, but worst comes to worst, a little ! above her head wouldn't be too distracting.

Very impressive for a first game! Funny combination of cute and morbid. Some music and more sound effects would've improved the experience.

The dialogue was too slow, the "hold z" should've made it much, much faster. The dialogue was also buggy. Often I had to press Z while walking towards the character several times before the dialogue started. Other times, when holding Z to speed it up and the dialogue ended, it would immediately start over.

Overall, great job for a first game! Keep at it!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the kind words and the thoughtful comment! Sound effects and music are high priority when the Jam ends, just behind fixing the dang dialogue system. XD I’ll figure out a good system for “hit detection,” increase the scroll speed a bunch, and finally fix the bug with the end of the dialogue… 🤘🤘

Lastly, thank you for the encouragement!

I loved the artstyle and gameplay. the only thing I can say is that it was a nice game. Well done.

Developer

Thank you~ I appreciate the nice comment. <3

I dont understand what to do after the opening scene but visuals and story looks good.

Developer

In her dialogue, Pip suggests she needs to "dig up the Hellivator" and that "X marks the spot." In the opening scene there's an object that contains a large X, and then it's all a matter of finding where her shovel is. (Note: the shovel gets mentioned before you're able to pick it up, even if you explore before interacting with the thing that has the X)

This game looks great, the screenshots look really nice! I'm a Linux user and run Windows games using WINE, which has worked fine in this jam until now. Sadly WINE can't run your game for some random reason (installer fails with an error). Obviously this isn't your fault. Apologies for not being able to rate, best of luck in the jam!

Developer(+1)

Well bugger! I'll probably upload a version that plays in browser post-jam, so if you wanna give it a go, look out for that. XD (I could probably upload it... but that feels against the spirit of the jam since that wasn't how I had it on release.)

Submitted(+1)

Sure, I'll be happy to play it post-jam!

"Not again", what do you mean not again?! I mean I... I gathered real quick what did she mean by "not again" lol
This was a fun story, I really liked the writing and jokes in this, some of the "what you are supposed to do" could have been clearer, but I quickly figured out that you're supposed to talk to the NPCs lot of times. The art was actually super good, super usage of the pastel colors and NPCs were all fun and nicely animated. I suppose my only real gripe is that I got stuck in the dialogues for way too often, since when the dialogue ends you don't need to press Z anymore, but if you do press Z you start the dialogue again, so I spend good while just desperately trying to get out of the dialogues. But I suppose after like 3rd time accidentally starting the dialogue again, it's my own fault at that point :P

Good work on this!

Developer

Thank you for playing! I'm so glad you enjoyed the humor and... yes... not again. XD I'm kinda planning on making the prequel in the future. Explaining what happened the first time she went down. It may have more killing than in this one. XP

Thank you for the compliments on the art and animation~ I worked really hard on it. XD

The f***ing dialogue... I cannot figure out how to buffer the last line of dialogue and thus stop it from automatically ending and allowing the player to accidentally restart the conversation. @_@ After the jam I'm planning on ripping the whole system apart and retrying. My main struggle was that the last line of dialogue immediately ends the "dialogue" part of the code when it finishes writing itself on the screen. That's where I need a buffer, and I can't quite figure out how to make it happen as there doesn't appear to be a "thing" I can grab onto there and have the game react to in the code. Nothing for the "if X is Y, then wait 2 second" kinds of statements.

Again, thank you so much for planning Pip~ You've been a gem.

Ugh I feel you so bad, for some reason dialogue systems are the hardest to get right (too slow, can't skip, text overlaps, text vanishes suddenly, etc. so many problems dialogue systems can have). So good luck out there! And glad to hear you got future plans for this, great going!

Great game! I really enjoyed the contrast between the bright colorful visuals and the darker tone of the game😄

Developer(+1)

Thank you~

So first of all the art is Really good and weird (but in a good way) there is a large contrast between the vibrant colors and the dark undertone of the game. the game is also a lot! longer then i expected. i needed around 30 to 40 min to reach the end. so all in all a nice and small game.

Developer

Thank you so much~ I'm glad the tone versus art juxtaposition came across well.

Good game, I thought it would be a platform game, but it was a kind of game I didn't expect. I saw that this is your first game and I wanted to give you some recommendations for the next one.

-Add background music, believe me it will improve a lot the feeling you want to give to the player.

-Check out a page called ‘Lospec’, it has several pixelart tutorials, plus you have a section to draw a colour palette, it will help you a lot to make it feel better.

-Don't make the sprites too big, it's better to have 32x32 or 16x16 sprites with less detail, otherwise it can happen like with some things in the game that feel too flat.

- Make dialogue on the fly or faster, because for people who read fast it's hell.

I hope it will help you to improve in the future, good job, and I hope to see some more of your games in the future.

Thank you for playing! Funny thing is, I am considering making a platformer down the line. Maybe with Pip, maybe a new character, we'll see.

I really wanted to include music but ran out of time in the end. XD After the jam it will be one of the first things I implement.
Thank you for the recommendations, I'll go check Lospec!
What was funny was that I feel I actually bit off way more than I could chew for a project with such a tight deadline. In retrospect, despite how much I love my sprites, I do think that the lower pixel count would've benefitted the work flow and allowed for more cohesion. Thank you for this recommendation too. <3

Again, thank you for taking the time to play my game and leaving such a nice and helpful comment!

Edit: Also the dialogue speed was a problem from the start. XD I could speed it up, but the last line of dialogue was really hard to keep on the screen when it finished typing, and I was worried it would go away too quickly. In the future, I'll probably completely rewrite the dialogue system to A. speed it up and B. stop the dialogue from just disappearing on the last line.
