This feels like a genuine relic of a 1984 Lode Runner style Apple II platformer. The commitment to the aesthetic and design is genuinely impressive: key-based controls, level codes and titles, points and lives. The varied layout and chase of Dr. Horrible adds a nice measure of variation. Great take on a classic genre!

Thanks for submitting Dr. Horrible's Castle to the jam!

Developer

Why, thank you so much!

Very fun and old-school game! Made it through all 10 levels, but 8 was very difficult so I used cheat codes to beat it. I love games like this, so 10/10.

Developer

Thank you! Yes, level 8 is a doozy.

Heh it was so much fun to play! I like the graphics, so minimalistic, but beautiful! It really looks like an old game. And it plays like an old game! Simple, but nice! No cons, maximum ratings even haha

We would also be very grateful if you would play our game and rate it too! :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks, glad you liked it. Have just checked your game out, it's great!

Thanks a lot! :DDD

A very fun game ! I'd have spend a lot of time on it at an old arcade place as a kid ! Great work.

Developer

Many thanks! I am a fan of old arcade games.

I have to say, it was a really fun game! What impressed me most was that you built the whole thing in JavaScript , seriously impressive. Well done!

Developer

Thank you!

Pretty fun actually, I like the tight controls and the bursts of speed vs. waiting. Also the multi-colored sprites and such were pretty appealing.

Developer

Thanks, glad you liked it!

A distinctive retro game that is also very challenging.

Developer

Thanks alot!

a deceptively simple looking game, but a quality platformer. I like that you broke the continuity on level 3 with something different, but the same goal

Developer

Thank you!

I liked this game. It's simple and fun, alike GoldRunner I think the game was called. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for checking it out! Just looked up Gold Runner and  yes I can see some similarities.

That was an absolute blast. The art style is so cute and reminiscent of something like the ZX Spectrum~ No notes: perfect game. Thank you for sharing~

Developer(+1)

Thank you, glad you liked it! I actually tagged this game as ZX-Spectrum (and Vic20) because I thought it might appeal to fans of those machines :D

PS I'll take a look a your game later today!

Submitted(+1)

Oh I didn’t see that tag! Glad I could spot the influence.

Aww thank you! I hope you enjoy it when you give it a go~

I made a video of your game.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much, that's some serious skills! I've posted a comment under the video on YouTube (although it's not showing at present, might have gone into the sin-bin!?).

I love the simple graphics. Well done!

this reminds me of an old dos game called jetpack. it's not really very similar to jetpack, just having to go around and collect items on a one screen level to progress. the climbing mechanic was really cool, it had just enough going on to feel like you could master it, especially when it came to timing it to jump over a critter. totally commits to the bit on the older hardware too. very cool!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Yes, in making this I was very much inspried by early 1980s games such as Jetpack.

Much kudos to you for jumping over a moving enemy! I didn't actually think that was possible.

Talk about committing to the vibe. Like this is pure retro to me, down to the cheat keys to get back to the levels and the way you navigate the menu. Very well done in that part, and well other parts too, I think the game was fun, the challenging fun type you get from old games and visually also fun. Great work on this!

Developer(+1)

Many thanks! My core gaming years were 1980-89, this is the type of game I wished I'd had the patience to write all those years ago.

Developer

Just a reminder these "cheat" codes offer direct access to levels 2-10:

Level 2 ("All Jolly Good Fun"): EJK
Level 3 ("Robots on the Rampage"): WHU
Level 4 ("All about the Timing"): ZFQ
Level 5  ("The Mausoleum"): ECY
Level 6 ("This is Just Weird"): EET
Level 7 ("Who Left a Pyramid Here?"): FJH
Level 8  ("The Battlements"): HZO
Level 9 ("Hero Worship"): RYN
Level 10  ("This is the End!"): GIL

Just select option 3 from the main menu and enter your chosen three letter code.

Challenging but fun game! I love the retro style graphics you used for your game!

Developer

Thank you, much appreciated!

Submitted(+1)

I love it! We both made retro styled games but I think yours follows the restrictions of the consoles a little more closely than mine. Great work

Developer (2 edits)

Many thanks for your kind comment. I think if we made truly period acurate 1980's retro games today, no-one would tolerate them :D

PS Your tape loading screen really is neat.

I love the retro art style and I really love how the whole game feel complete that's a lot to say for a week long jam great job!

I really loved the sound effects especially the drop sound and the timer added a whole new element to the game I found myself with 5 seconds left on the clock dashing for the last key.

overall I really loved the game amazing work!

Developer

Thanks! Yes I felt it was important to make a fully functioning game, with user menus etc. Of course it helps that the game is graphically very simple.

Your game looks interesting, hope to check it out later tonight.

Submitted(+1)

I'm a sucker for this retro games. I loved it. Very nice mechanics, challenging but fun to master!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! Coming from you that's appreciated! :-)

Simple game i love it! The artstyle, especially the keys remind me of an old game i used to play on my pc, i forgot what it is. Very nostalgic game.

Developer

Thank you! Glad it stirred some memories, I was worried it might be too old fashioned for a modern game jam.
