Covers all the design bases of a solid 2D survival horror. Nice beats and jump scares throughout. The monster chase sequences and locker hiding mechanics work super well. Gotta say, my favorite aspect of the game was the uncanny shuffle of the player character, which doubles down on the tension as he shuffles from the monster!
Thanks for submitting Grief to the jam!
Thank you so much! 🤩
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! That really means so much to me🥹
Wow, this game touched me! Amazing story! The visual and artistic design is at a very high level! I didn't find any bugs, the game works perfectly. I completed on both endings, and I won’t soon forget about this game ;D
Thank you so much! That made my day to read and I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed it🥹🎉
Cool game. Unfortunately, I couldn't get past the monster. If I hid it would just camp by my locker. I tried entering while it was off-screen (with my flashlight off). It still didn't work.
The art looks cool. The visuals in general look nice. I really like the environment; feels grounded.
The controls were cool. Challenging movement/interaction systems can already be fun. Mixing it in with survival horror and you get some real excitement. The guy who hung himself got me; the stringer music + the visuals made it a nice scare. My initial encounter with the monster was very scary too.
Great submission.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it😁
Sorry to hear about your encounter with the monster, usually it shouldn't camp and if it gets stuck it shouldn't be for very long. As for the locker I'm not sure since it is quite literally impossible code wise for it to kill you while you're in a locker with your flashlight off...
Two things:
1) I had my flashlight on when entering the locker then turned it off.
2) When I first saw it I went back out the door and then came back. Maybe a loading issue? Just speculating.
Still a fun game though.
Did it just happen one time or was it consistently killing you in lockers with the flashlight off?
(Also just checking that you're 100% sure it was off and that the light of it didn't just blend into one of the celling lights or like you mis clicked one of the walking keys and got out of the locker?)
Sorry if I'm nagging a bunch about that I am just very perplexed on how that could have possibly happened🤣
I really appreciate the feedback and I'm glad you still had fun😁
Alright, I've replayed that first encounter twice now from a fresh "save".
One time I managed to get the monster camping me (maybe it was just stuck on its legs and was actually slowly leaving? I waited for a minute at least).
The other time it didn't camp. I actually played all the way through this time and man you got a cool game.
Back on the topic of killing me in the locker. Both times the monster didn't touch me in the locker. there are multiple signs of whether the flashlight is on or off (sprite changes, audio, lights), but the actual light is fairly dim so I think it's likely I simply had the flashlight on while inside.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to replay it again, that really means a lot to me and I'm so happy you enjoyed it😄
Yeah I definitely do need to work on/fix the movement for the creature so it gets stuck less often😅
This was the first game that scared me, so well done there! The monster did get kinda annoying when it would just camp around the locker you hid in, so you had no choice to but to guess which door you need to go through and make a mad dash for it. I did not know who's name was on the tombstone and what their relation to our protagonist was.
Great work! I think 2D video game horror is really difficult, but this game does a good job at it.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it😁
Sadly the creature camping is a bug that needs to be fixed, most of the time it should just run past. However it tends to get stuck a lil bit😅
(Lore Spoiler)
The name on the tombstone is the player's brother. This connection can be made through some of the notes throughout the asylum. Most notably the one in the medical wing where it contains a note with info on the player😄👍
I meant to ask, what was the thinking behind using a procedural walk cycle? I got the impression my man was playing QWOP behind the scenes, and struggling a bit.
You're all good, I actually was mostly using this jam as a learning experience to test procedural walking and ragdolls for the first time since I've never done it before lol😄
I think if I had more time I could've smoothed it out a bit but sadly I'll have to wait until after the jam to make a more polished full version😅
Oh, I get that! I use game jams to learn something new all the time. I think it's cool you got the system as far along as it is. Again, well done!
I made a video of your game. It's at the start of this video.
Awesome! Thank you so much😁🎉
Nice work overall. And the ragdoll animation look is oddly satisfying.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it, it took so long to set that up lol😄
Yeah I figured. I didn't want to assume anything but it felt like you put a lot of care into getting it right.
Thank you! I always put my heart and soul into my games and it makes me so happy to know that it's noticeable🥹
Hats off to you this was fantastic. It has a goofy ragdoll cartoon style but you managed to make it absoloutely terrifying. Audio is great, the monster and its effects are just crazy good.
Definitely a top jam entry for sure
Thank you so much! That is so kind and really means so much to me, I greatly appreciate it🥹
The game was great. The majority of the gameplay was terrifying.
The animations were flawless, the controls were easy to learn.
All in all, everything was perfect.
Thank you so much! I'm so happy you loved it😁
This has some good effects, I really like how the atmosphere is built with the lighting and static, but also with just in general the sounds. The way you made the walking animation (procedural animation I presume) is also interesting and fun, and probably unintentionally added to the unnerving vibe for me when the joints started to go mad and the walking cycle started to look like his legs were bent backwards, but all to more it made the monsters movement more grotesque. Good work on this!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it😄
Also yep the animations were procedural and I actually used this game as a learning experience for that feature specifically, since I've never done that or ragdolls before😁
This is a really great game! You nailed the aesthetic. Kinda whish when you look trough the bars of a cell you see what's inside instead of reading what's inside, but overall it's a pretty good game!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you like it😄
Originally I was going to make the art for when you looked through the bars and for other inspects, but sadly had to cut it due to time restraints😞
(However I'll likely do that in an updated version after the jam)
Amazing! Looking forward to playing your game when it fully releases!
Everything is perfect! Graphics, mechanics, sounds, story! Within Game Jam I think it’s a masterpiece! Thank you for this game!
nice work. the ragdoll physics are really fitting, the sound design is great and the story is nicely told. really enjoyed it
I love the ragdoll mechanics in this game, the story is excellent, and the atmosphere is quite creepy. Good game!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it😁
Cool unique game, the movement was funky haha what gave it a more comic look. Overal everything was nice and worked good. The artstyle was interesting and good fitting with the sounds. I didn't really find a use of the flaslight so idk maybe later find a way where you really have to use a flashlight (maybe cause my brightness was all the way up)
Overall well done!
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you liked it 😄
Great game! That scare with the monster turning into a nurse for a frame was really cool. Also, the characters being physics-based was really unique. Great stuff!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it, and you're also the first person to mention that lil detail😁
Scary game. I got scared when the monster showed up. I tried to kill the monster, but after I fired the first bullet, I was like, "That didn't work! I need to hide!" O_O I ended up with the ending where I ended up in a grave.
And it looks like you can actually kill the monster, but you have to shoot the monster repeatedly.
I'm glad you liked it!😄
The monster only takes one shot to kill, you might have just aimed a lil too far up or down lol. I'd recommend walking toward it until the screen effects start, and then wait for it to come to you while you steady your aim👍
Okay, it turns out that when I beat the game the first time, I shot somewhere else and killed the monster. Turns out I have a poor aim. I ended up getting a bad ending, but at least I got a good ending the first time.
Gotcha lol, Congrats on getting both endings😁
Really solid game all around. The monster was unsettling, and the slightly unreliable way your character walks around added to the tension during the scenes where you interacted with it. I enjoyed the story as well. Thank you for sharing~
Thank you so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed it😁
I reaaly love how the character moves, great game :D
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it😁
I got the good ending on the first try! I didn't kill the monster though.
The walk cycle was a little silly, and I ended up having to go back and ram into the hanged man because he was getting in my way and I couldn't get to the key and note. It kinda removed the jumpscare which had me on edge, by making it funny? I also ended up not using the flashlight at all, it didn't feel like it was that necessary.
That being said, great aesthetics, good voice acting, and some genuinely tense moments!
I'm glad you liked it!
Also you get the good ending for not killing the monster lol. As for the flashlight did you have the brightness set to the increased one? I'd recommend playing on the default or dark mode brightness to really see the value in the flashlight👍
Nope, I only lowered the volume a little, but didn't touch the brightness setting at all! Might be my screen setting?
Hmmmm, I'll try to look into that a bit then😁👍
