Hello! I have found that figuring out what you want to play in these jams can be hard with 272 entries of very different kinds of games! It is also hard to stand out when you aren't able to highlight your genre. Here is a work in progress list of games by genre that I am putting together: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17VoDozhc9qvIfTTVYwKQa-5_0EEjRg1JPgyoNp8x3Qg/...

The Current Genre Categories are:

- Horror (Creepy / Atmospheric / Psychological)

- Horror (Disturbing Themes / Gore)

- Comedy

- Mystery / Thriller

- Romance / Dating Sim (General)

- Romance (GL/Lesbian)

-Romance (BL/Gay)

 - Cozy / Cute / Heartfelt

- Avante Garde / Artsy / Concept Exploration

-Fantasy

-Science Fiction

If I haven't put your game on here and you would like it added or think it is in the wrong genre, feel free to comment with your games genre. Also feel free to make suggestions of other games to add to categories, or suggestions around the genre categories if something seems like it's missing. To try and make this easier for individual games to be noticed, I think it makes sense to limit it to the one genre that best describes a game and makes it stand out, as most Spooktober games will be spooky!

Yes!! I have had the same exact thought, I wish we could filter by genre.

I'd suggest additional categories under romance- like BL/Gay, GL/Lesbian for some basic ones. -and I'd appreciate if you'd put my entry under the Romance GL category! LoveBites

Yeah, those make sense. I think if I add too many more categories I will die trying to maintain this list haha. So might not try to break it down too fine

I believe our submission, Death and Faeology, can fit nicely in Mystery / Thriller category!

Pumpkin pie.

Thank you for the great initiative! Our game, Babelomania, is a horror adventure. Since it has gore (although it can be censored), I guess it can go under the second category :)

Thanks for your work! My game, VETO, would fall into dystopian horror, in the (Creepy / Atmospheric / Psychological) category!

This is amazing idea! Our game The Stars Under Lockehurst would def go into the mystery/ thriller category :> Good luck with the sorting

if you told me a year ago my work would be featured under 'disturbing themes/gore', I would have been very skeptical. thanks for the mention!

suggesting phantasmiac for psychological horror and uhh i'm not actually sure which horror catfish in disguise is. is it disturbing enough for that category

Phantasmiac

Catfish In Disguise

Thank you for this even though I can't really decide in which category my entry (Spider girl in my basement? Nah, there is no one) should fall. I tried to make cozy and cute story with creepy and unsettling elements with romantic impliactions so it's "Creepy / Atmospheric / Psychological" or "Cozy / Cute / Heartfelt". If I could make my category I would put it in "Creepy / Cute" or something like that

Submitted

I think it makes sense to put it in the category that makes it unique, as most of these games have creepy elements in some form or another!

then "Cozy / Cute / Heartfelt" fits i think

Great idea to organize everything like this!

I'd like to add our game Tricks, Treats and Mirrors onto the list. The Horror (creepy, atmospheric) category would be the best fit from this, but I'd personally describe it as more of a horror-comedy.

Great initiative! I think a more organized list like this benefits all of us. Our game, The Hermetic Tower, fits perfectly into the Mystery / Thriller category.

Hey there.  Next year, I can include a questionnaire to let folks self declare their genres if anyone wants to help me build a list of them, and then it can be made into a sorting option into the submissions page.

Sadly I can't fix it this year, but this is a great idea.

Cool!

Hi! Thank you for this great idea! Could you add our game, Halloween Party at Grendel's, to the Romance/Dating Sim category? Our main character Hazel does everything for love :)

Submitted

This is awesome! Thank you!

Thank you for this list!  Necromance (https://itch.io/jam/spooktober-2024/rate/2946406) is somewhere between a mystery with elements of romance, comedy, and horror.  I would probably put it in the mystery category first and foremost as discovering what happened in the past is the largest element of the game.

Awesome idea!! horsementween is a pretty silly (comedy) game :D Thank you for working on this list!!

There's quite a few Fantasy VNs in the running this year.  Automaton of Second London is a Fantasy game first and foremost (although romance is also a big part of it).  There were a couple other games (Tell It Slant and deathwish) that would probably fit in too, but that's between you and their respective dev teams.  xD

Submitted

Haha if they want a say they can come to the thread. Great point, I've added Fantasy and Sci Fi as Genres, hopefully this can be used to make a genre list for next year.

Suuuuper late to the party (sorry!) but I just want to thank you so much for this list paperwren! This would definitely help me pick out what to play this weekend >:3c

I think our game Undergrowth fits under the psychological horror category if you're still accepting entries!
