Very nice game, fun and satisfying to watch the monster evolve.

great game! great idea for the theme, simple but effective art, the music, fantastic job!

Great work on this! The art was simple but effective, the premise was really interesting and I enjoyed the boss fight at the end -- thought it was especially cool that you could fight it at the beginning but basically get your ass kicked, definitely makes you feel powerful once you come back with more abilities. The post-death messages were a little too long, especially after you've read the text (a skip button would be nice), and having a better indicator for how much DNA you had would've helped as well.

This are just small details though. Overall a really solid entry! Good job!

Developer

Im glad you enjoyed it and you are definitely right that you should be able to skip the death screen but I don't get the point with the DNA . There is a big counter on the screen. I wouldn't know how to make it more clear.

Ah that's my bad, I see it in the top-right corner. The confusion came from having half of the DNA strand be black -- since a lot of the terrain is also black, only the green pops out whenever you have any sort of ceiling above you, so in the beginning of the game I didn't know what the icon meant and didn't notice when it changed (since you grab it and then are expected to die right afterwards). Maybe having it flash white when you pick up a strand to draw your eye to it? It's not a big problem or anything, just my first impression from playing.

Really good entry! The concept is fun and the execution was perfect, not to mention the art which was a good mix of cute and scary, and the music that kept me engaged throught the entire playthrough. I can see myself buying a full game if you ever decide to expand it. Overall the best entry I've played yet. Good work!

Developer

Thank you so much for the high praise! Really glad you liked it!

The sprite work is incrediable :o Great character designs brilliant level and good gameplay mechanics!

I can see you gave your love and hardwork to this game simply amazing! Also the boss attack animation is really satisfying to watch the way it rotates is so cool :D

Note : I would be happy if you could check out my game as well :d

Developer

thank you for the kind words , ill absolutely check out your game :)

the movement, visuals, animations, music, audio and boss fights was stunning, the DNA mechanics fit the theme very well, the fight was fun but I was hoping a sort of megaman x series kind of fight, really like how you can choose to fight the boss at the start but it will be impossible, the story was nice and simple, just add more DNA like one when you get shot from a distance you can parry or block attacks or when you get kill from flying enemy you can shoot, maybe when dashing when the monster where too fast so you can fight more bosses, this really feels like megaman x when you have to defeat all the boss maverick XD

good game :D

Developer

damn!! I will have to re compose all the music based in manami matsumae now! Hahahaha

Thanks for your words!!

Developer

oo, thanks for the powerups suggestions! We purposely kepts the amount of powerups small so we didn't overscope, but it definitely would be cool to add more powerups. The issue is that each adaptation uses visual real estate on the character, so that kind of limits the amount of powerups we can put in unless we think of a work around

Wow! this was really fun, The boss was Sooo good! this game was really polished! the animation was super cool!  just wow!

I didn't expect to see a basically fully fledged metroidvania in a 72h game jam! Excellent job :D

This is reeaaly impressive for 72 hours! The art and animations are fantastic, the gameplay is really smooth and the music really adds to the feel. The only minor things i would suggest are adding some more feedback when you are close to drowning and a skip button on the death screens. Great job team!!

Developer

good points

if we make an updated version that are the first two things i would change

thank you for taking the time to play the game and for the comment. glad you enjoyed it :)

This was a great game for 72 hours, well done! The gameplay was nice and smooth  and, although it's only minor, the footstep sounds really helped add something to the game. Exploration felt satisfying too, especially when discovering a new obstacle and trying to find the DNA to go along with it. It could've been a bit more unique though - it's a lot like a typical metroidvania except you have to die to get your powerup, although with that being said it still was very enjoyable. The graphics were great too, as well as the animations, being very clean and polished. The sound effects were nice  and the music worked well too, but sometimes it did get stuck repeating when restarting. Overall, though, it was a really well made game, especially for 72 hours - phenomenal work!

nice feedback here! Thanks so much!!

love this game, how you die gives you direction to evolve is a very good idea and you use it in a smart way! I really enjoyed the game!

Some nitpicks are the O2 bar, it is quite hard to notice it, I die in the boss level to realize you need to jump and get O2 before drown. I would suggest (maybe) reduce hp when you are out of O2 instead of killed directly, or add the water in an early stage in the boss fight, otherwise, it is a little frustrated that you need to redo the boss fight while the boss has only left 20% hp.

Overall I like this game, I'm a bad platformer player so I didn't get all map explored but it still one of the best games I played in this jam! I'd like to see it gets into a full game since the mechanic is very unique and has potential. say if you die more times in swim you get a longer O2 bar, or jump higher if you are impaled more times, these evolve is not needed if you are good at the game, but might give some bad players(like me) motivation to keep playing it.

Developer

Thanks for checking out the game and leaving the detailed review! Appreciate the criticisms because they give us a clue of how to improve next time! I'm not sure how we would implement continuous improvement since you cant improve without dna, we envisioned it as similar to a metroidvania where you unlock powerups but you choose which to unlock, rather than a continuous stat boost

I love the art direction in this game. The controls get a little awkward once you get all your abilities because you have to juggle the keyboard and the mouse. It would have been nice to have attack mapped to a keyboard key. It's a bold game and cool take on the theme. And again, very good art direction. Kudos.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, and I'm very pleased you liked the art! Since you can attack in any direction, I'm not really sure how we would replicate that with solely a keyboard

Wow this was an interesting take on the theme, and the gameplay was also amazing!! Also how did you managed to build such a a large world in only 3 days?? O.o I also liked that you actually don't need all ability in order to finish the game wich is nice... Good Job!! (^u^)

Nice work, nice graphics, and it's like limbo game.

Edited :

This was a seriously good game. A lot of games in the jam had the mechanic of learning new abilities every time you die but this one does it beautifully. I really felt like I was becoming an apex predator. The art was gorgeously simple and the music while repetitive didn't really seem annoying. I ran into a bug ( no pun intended ) with the boss where the music stopped playing but that's pretty much the only major issue I had with the game. The boss was epic and his patterns were cool as well . No other complaints other than enemies taking a little too many hits. Amazing job with this

spoilers not allowed hahaha thanks for playing!

Damn, sorry I'll edit what I said

thanks again for your time and kind words

You have packed really lot into this game. There is very nice intro, powerups are close enough to not make the gameplay repetitive and I especially adore the little details in background. And the bossfight is the best I've seen in this jam so far! Good job.

Submitted(+2)

Really nice! I can't believe this was made in 72 hours!

Submitted(+2)

Cool game. I especially liked seeing all the creature designs/animations.

Submitted(+1)

I liked it, the controls feel good, the graphics are simple but well done, and I like how you linked the topic of the jam to the concept of evolution. I think the only problem I had is that it was hard for me to orient myself in the map as everything seemed very similar, I think in a more linear level this art style wouldn't have been an issue. But the level was not that big so it was not a huge problem anyway.

Developer

thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback! Yeah I can definitely get where you're coming from there, good point!
