How does your game represent Mode?
This game is a kart racer where you can swap back and forth between hover mode and wheel mode during the race. Hover mode is faster but wheel mode has a tighter turning radius. In order to beat the Hard Mode rivals you will need to employ hover mode wisely.

Cool old-school Mario kart style!

The controls of the kart were pretty solid and the characters were charming and funny. I like that you had racer AI, but I wish you added some more rivals in a race. It felt a little empty with just one.

Overall, great work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! That's a great point, I actually played against all 3 rivals during development and you're absolutely right it was more fun and felt less empty. I dialed it back down to 1 per race hoping to gate the rivals behind the player beating the previous rival's times, but in the end I didn't go that route anyway, and having all rivals in at the same would have been better indeed.

Submitted(+1)

Great job! We liked that it was more in the style of the SNES Mario Kart. Changing modes was fun. Nice job making the racing AI too.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it, I'm a big fan of Loot n Goblin.

Great start for a kart racing game. I would recommend using physics-based movement though, since without it the lack of momentum is pretty apparent. Overall though, great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yes I'd like to add physics for the drifting for sure: lock in the momentum when they start the drift and make steering only change the amount they're sliding, more like MarioKart. Right now what I call drifting is really just "tighter turn radius mode that also gives you boosts" because I didn't have time to get into the physics quite as much as I want to yet.

Submitted(+1)

I'm honestly shocked I haven't seen a kart racer with this kind of sprite style since mario SNES-- I think fleshed out, there's a ton of potential here. Figuring out the drifting was a blast, and the enemies and tracks were genuinely tough. Great job! Ghengis FTW!!

Developer(+1)

Ah the Genghis prophecy is true! Thanks a lot for playing and the nice comment! You raise a good point, something about sprites in karts just has a special charm and we haven't seen it commercially in a long time.

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the 2d Sprites that you used and the ability to switch between the two different modes. I think a few other people commented about the respawn place already so I won't spend too much time on it! I loved the boost you get from the drifting!

Developer(+1)

I feel you, the respawn thing will definitely be the first thing on my fix list after the jam. Thanks a lot for playing and the nice comment and glad you liked the drift boosts! Once I added those is when I started having lots of fun in the game.

Submitted(+1)

Love a good kart racer! Love the 2D sprites for the drivers! steering felt good! my only complaint is, if you fall off the track anywhere, even at the very end of a lap, you respawn back the beginning of the lap. Would be nice to respawn where you fall off so it doesn't feel as punishing.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot Travis! Yeah the respawn-at-start aspect is my number regret for sure. I spent about 2 hours in blender in the final hours of the jam working on checkpoint hitboxes and applying their rotation to the character but I kept running into a problem where the player would respawn facing the wrong way. Then I'd rotate the box 180 degrees in blender, export, reload, and somehow they'd still be facing a random wrong way. Then I added child boxes to the checkpoint hitboxes to try and get the player to face the child boxes after they respawned at the hitbox, and somehow it still wasn't working, so I had to scratch it. Thanks for playing and glad you liked the sprites and the steering!

Tight controls and solid gameplay, really great entry!

Developer(+1)

Thanks Wayne!! Glad you played it!

Submitted(+1)

You did an amazing job with this! I love all the different characters I can choose from I played biggy and donsly. So many courses for a jam as well and the different difficulties/times you set up for each for us to race against. I like the mode switching and drifting combo. I think the mechanics as they are now are already compelling and give a lot of room to grow in skill in order to improve ones times on each course.

Developer

Thanks so much! Glad you gave it a try, you have great taste in character picks. Glad you liked the mechanics, very thoughtful feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Nice to finally play this after seeing your progress in the discord. I feel like it can be tricky to get the controls of a kart racer tuned just right but you nailed it! The game handles great. I wish there was more content, but this is already a lot of work for a jam of this length. Wonderful job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot, really glad to hear that you liked the controls! I definitely want to add some more content like additional tracks and boost pads and so on. I enjoyed seeing your game's progress in the discord too, and popping ice cream emojis on it, going to check it out right now. Thanks for playing!

Its a great base for a mario-kart like game, I wish there were more things to the game gameplay wise. Adding in some powerups or drifting or some other mechanics could make this game a lot more fun. Nevertheless, this game is great. Well done!

Developer

Thanks a lot! I definitely want to add some powerups and floor-boost and steer-locked drift mechanics and maybe even multiplayer to this base, great points. I'm looking forward to playing Unduster as Granny Gummers tomorrow, your game has looked awesome from the beginning.

This game brings me back to my childhood, I used to play Mario Kart a lot and you definitely created something amazing, somehow you brought some details that make me feel like that kid again.

First of all, I love the fact that you gave different personalities to the different characters, and some of them made me laugh, I think my favourite one was Chernglin, because I can...probably trust him haha, that Donsley fella also seems to be important, after all he's the CEO of pizza butt...

The driving mechanic was just the right amount of perfect (very similar to Mario Kart) meaning that it's not very difficult to control it, but not very easy either, so perfect. Also the floating images from the levels are an awesome detail that reminds me of the rainbow road in Mario Kart 64 :'') really great. And also the hover mode is very satisfying, it's like waiting just the right oportunity to use it without falling.

I never got to beat the hard mode rivals, I have no idea of how you managed to create such a skilled AI... but I almost did beat the hard mode once, racing as Josh :)

Definitely one of my favourite games from this jam, you did an amazing job, be proud of it!  :)))

5/5 on every aspect

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot manu, what a very nice comment! You picked up on a ton of things that I was hoping players would notice! Cheers and so glad you enjoyed it!

Great game I love racing in me car

Developer

Thanks Kevin, appreciate your comment and glad you gave it a play!

Submitted(+1)

Haha great job, love the snes kart racer feel. Chernglin ftw!

Developer(+1)

Many thanks, glad you picked up on the SNES inspiration. We got a Chernglin fan over here! He was the first character I thought of, very glad you liked him.

Submitted(+1)

some fun driving here!

Developer

Thanks a lot! Little Stitches looks really cool, gonna check it out

Submitted(+1)

Really like how much it reminded of snes-era Mario Kart with its 2D-3D mixture. The boost was very satisfying to pull off once I got the hang of it and it added a nice bit of depth to the gameplay.

I did found it funny seeing the AI driver on easy mode occasionally driving straight off the track as soon as the race started. I imagine that wasn't intended but I liked it a lot anyway just for the silliness!

Developer

Thanks a lot for playing! Glad you got the hang of the boost, that's really what the game is all about but I was worried people wouldn't get the hang of it in time. Glad you picked up on the SNES mario kart inspiration too, that's exactly what I was going for. Surprisingly the AI driving straight off the course was intentional but I realized it looked like an accident too late to try and change that, glad you thought it was funny though, I did too!

Great game. I like the character descriptions. I really

enjoyed using hover mode because I like to go fast. I raced against the hard difficult rivals, and yes, it was hard. I am not very good at Kart games, but I had fun.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot, glad you had fun. Very glad that you liked the character descriptions too, I liked that too. It goes without saying but I really enjoyed seeing all your updates in discord over the jam period.

Submitted(+1)

Nice game :) like the characters

Developer

Thanks a lot for playing, glad you like the characters! That's great to hear :)

Submitted(+1)

awesome cart racer.

I don't really see the point in the different modes when I can just stay in hover mode and hold down drift the entire time.

maybe if drift didn't allow you to slow down it would be an interesting downside for the hover mode. Or maybe there could be water sections and offroad sections that only normal car or hover can clear or get a speed advantage on

Also local multiplayer would be a nice touch.

Great game.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and the very nice feedback, you raise a great point about making the modes more distinct. I originally envisioned it as a multipayer kart racer until I noticed the jam rules forbade multiplayer (not that I would have ended up having time anyway). I definitely want to add multiplayer after the jam period ends, great call.

Submitted(+1)

My dude, I love the 2.5 mixed with 3D kart race! It's actually pretty charming art style wise. The music is catchy and fitting for a kart race.

I think the idea definitely can be expanded upon. As for now I don't really see much difference on what hover mode provides even though it's mentioned about the tighter spin. If the game is going to get expanded, I would love to see more of the hover/wheel bigger implementation like jump then hover fly part of the map for example; to make the switch implementation more of a highlight and a mandatory for player to use even though they're losing the race.

Great work! Also good job on the characters, I love how every single one drawn. Everyone represented have so much personality and in the tracks too!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! Glad you liked the hand drawn characters, that means a lot having seen your epic Legend of Lu character art. Great points on how it could be expanded. My original idea was to have a Walker mode in addition to Hover mode, and depending on which mode is active you're immune/susceptible to different attack items, and there would have been boost pads on the ground that only activate if you're in the matching mode. All of that fell by the wayside, but I definitely want to come back and expand. Thanks again!

Submitted(+1)

Your idea of walker mode reminds me a bit of sonic riders system.

But it's cool, thinking about mechanic for kart racing to make it interesting is quite a challenge imo. You got the base, if you do want to expand it that always can come later. You're doing amazing work already, keep it up!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot, back at you, really impressive work!

Submitted(+1)

Dude there is so much good here. The mode switch for the carts is awesome. It's giving me DRS on an F1 car vibes. I really like the courses too, and doing 3d carts with 2d characters is genius, especially for a game jam.

My main bit of feedback: For me, the game was locking up on controller, so I had to play on keyboard. Because the drift key is on E it makes it very hard to drift while turning right. I'd maybe recommend placing it on a key that would require a finger that is not already occupied, such as left shift.

This was a lot of fun. Thanks!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it. Sorry to hear about the controller issues, I was using an xbox one controller connected with usb while developing and didn't encounter that. That's an excellent tip about putting drift on left shift, I'll add that after the jam ends. I've been looking forward to playing Moai a lot, it looks beautiful, going to check it out right now.
