The visual, and sound is really cool.
Good job!!

A beautiful-looking and sounding game! This was fun to play, I liked the character swapping - gotta think quick to manage your characters.

Charming, funny, and a great idea for a game, I like the overall style, however, the lack of indication of me doing damage to the boss made it hard to fully enjoy the experience. I do think this game has potential, good job!

The switching between two roles is a great design

But the feedback from hitting the boss is not good

I like this game, it has great potential

I had quite a fun playing this game. Gameplay is very engaging. There are some glitches here and there but that's okay. Great job on the beautiful pixel art, i really love it. There's only one type of boss, but it has different attacks. Also like the Monkey Island, Pirates of the Caribbean vibe of the game. I would really love to see this turn into a full game. A very good job indeed!

The game is pleasantly charming in a good way, and there's quite a lot to love to be honest. Some thoughts:

- As mentioned by Lily of the Void, this game is positively dripping with charm - I love the sass. If you are thinking of taking this game further, consider giving each character more specific personalities though - but otherwise, this light hearted banter is great!

- The combat is however, somewhat lacking.  Perhaps I am missing something, but all I do is use the skeleton to activate the cannon and just spam attack with the captain - rinse and repeat. The enemy AI might have been bugged but attacks were working. I also see no need to use the dash, or the shield mechanic.

- I see potential in how you utilise the swap mechanic though - with auto-reloading, and shields that activate only when you swap characters away. I imagine other characters could be "turret-mode" chaacters tha activate its full DPS potential when swapped away as other potential ideas. Great design pillars, implementation just needs work.

- Great art and music, presentation as a whole. Music also fits to give this a very light hearted theme, very easy to go into and have fun - even the parrot is such a guy.

Honestly, pretty nice. I wouldn't say its engaging - but it's a great cohesive project.

The idea of exchanging with Shield, Gunner and Captain was supposed to shine with challenging level design based on strategy and placement. Sadly we didn't have enough time to make an elaborated level design. We needed to point in a less ambitious route haha.

Thank you a lot of the detailed review and insights, they are valuable since we will continue developing the game.

Later in the night I will give you my review in your game n.n

i had 40 pages of scripts of dialogue but only about 8 ended up being used. turns out writing words is easier than making a game to go with it

"to get their gross, ugly human forms back". I haven't even played yet, but I'm already sold.

Ok, now that I've tried it, this is what I have to say: BEST GAME EVER! I loved it. I absolutely love games with sass and this one was great. Theme art music dialogue all of it was amazing.

On a more critical note, the combat was the only thing that was subpar. At first it was difficult because I didn't seem to do much damage. But once I figured out how to cheese it (cannon then a barrage of sword) it became easy. Too easy and repetitive. Apart from that. Best game in the jam so far for me. I gave it 5/5 and I do not regret taking the time to figure it out so I can finish it.

Keep that sass guys, I love it. Have I ever used a cannon on a pirate ship? No! So I'll just believe this sassy parrot called something the destroyer who apparently has more brains than the crew combined. Lovely!

Thanks for playing! Combat could defo be improved but glad you enjoyed it otherwise :)

Developer(+1)

wow! You don't have an idea how happy you make me with this comment. Thank you! Yeah, we went a little bit to ambitious with the gameplay for the scope of a jam hahaha. But if you like it, I invite you to follow us because we will improve and refine that aspect and add more!

Submitted(+1)

Already followed sprout before you said anything. Now I've followed you too.

Submitted(+2)

hey another pirate game! We tried your game and had fun. The character switching was fun but how to proceed wasn't intuitive, probably because we skipped tutorial lol. Consider rating our game as well.

Submitted(+2)

Art and narrative is really nice, lacks a bit in gameplay aspects. Overall very fun and amusing.

Submitted(+3)

Really cool! I particularly enjoyed the witty dialogue from the parrot, it reminded me of The Secret of Monkey Island. The music choices were spot-on, enhancing the overall nostalgic experience.

Swapping between the cannoneer and the captain was also really fun, it really made me appreciate the multiple difficulty choices as I was getting used to the mechanic.

OH MAN! LET DOWN! I got very into the atmosphere and dialogue and the exchange player mechanic but I don't think I can hurt the boss or something went wrong here.... I will endorse this project and/or help get this game done if you guys are trying to finish it? Or if your not I would scallywags the scraps and make it into the game it was indented to be....  always wanted to make a pirate game

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

Hey! Thank you for the encouraging comment. I am really happy that energy and main intention of the game is clear!
We're absolutely enamored with this idea and definitely we are going to refine, expand, and publish it!

Thank you again!

And of course, if we need any help or anything we will let you know.

I am trying your game btw, later in the night i will give you my review :)

Thanks ours is just a crappy demo also! needs work hope you enjoy and can give feedback, maybe read some of comments before gameplay....people tend to have similar reviews.... already adjusted some of this and am pushing newer Non-Jam WebGL build to the page

Still love this Game idea with the pirates let me know your planning on finishing or expanding the game idea still!  gave you extra star in FUN category!

Hey there, I am trying to get other to re-submit their reviews for my game if possible...it was deleted and removed from the Jam on accident based on a technicality which was solved between the Jam Host and a particular asset used in the game...please if you have time, energy, and/or generosity to re-saved your ratings/reviews for the game. I am going through and re-saving yours given my browser kept your rating saved data on my end...but it looks like I lost all 73 reviews and ratings from my end....  :( best of luck to you in the Jam

Sorry for the inconvenience if you have a chance to rate/re-rate

Hi there, the story and dialogue is cool, but I don't understand, dioes the captain is nuts ? How can you have a sword and not deal damages, only getting hit by the crab, pls help me ?

Developer

By any chance are you using mac? I am the only one in the team that have the same problems as you, also theo nly one with a mac hehe xc

Submitted

I'm not on mac, I got stun whenever i'm near the boss

Developer

Yep, the original dea is to protect the gunner with the captain. So the gunner can charge his weapon and deal fatal damage to the crab. The characters cant die, they just get stunned, is more about dealing with the boss as fast as possible to avoid further damage in the ship.

Submitted

Yeah but then the captain attack is useless no ?

Very unique game with funny dialogue. I'll be honest, the gameplay is ok, difficulty is manageable but the music is really really excellent and the overall atmosphere too. Good job !

Developer

yohoho

Developer(+1)

Hey! I'm glad you liked the music Mister! I appreciate your comment a lot!

Submitted(+3)

Everything was pretty good. I liked the visuals and the writing the most. Gameplay was okay and difficulty was absent. I mean... it was reallly easy to beat the game.

I loved the canon mecanic. Shield was smart too.

Very well done !

Developer(+1)

If nightmare mode was not challenging enough for you, have you considered going through it again blindfolded with your little brother on the controller?

Submitted(+1)

Ohhh, I didn't see there were more difficulties. I'll do the game again with a higher difficulty mode ! Thanks!

Submitted(+2)

I couldn't quite figure it out the gameplay but I had so much fun with the dialogue and the characters are absolutely charismatic. Had quite a good laugh with it. Nice job (:

Developer(+2)

sorry the tutorial was not clear enough, I've decided to give the tutorial parrot up for adoption

Submitted(+4)

Amusing dialogue and a unique take on the theme! I was glad there was a helpful (and funny) tutorial to help explain the mechanics, though I'm so bad I couldn't make it beyond the crab boss.

Developer (1 edit)

We'll keep the difficulty in mind for updates, it gets hard to read difficulty after working on the game for this long. Also, the second and third bosses are more difficult versions of the crab boss, so you're not missing too much unless you're here for the dialogue
