It's summer break for me so I finally have all the time of the days to build this project which was really nice!!! However I do still feel kinda stressed out because of last minute issues and some imperfections that needs to be fixed. I'm a new dev and I worked on my game solo and there is A LOT of work but I'm glad I got to a point where I'm satisfy with what I build. Also because I am on vacation I build the entire thing on my MacBook Pro (LOL)!!

If you are reading this, I want to congratulate you for finishing (or not) the jam!! And I would like to know how was it for you and your team. I am new here, so I would love to hear from you about your experiences, and advice you have for a new game dev :) Also leave your game here, and I will check it out and leave some comments!! Thanks :)

When I saw the theme of this jam, I was immediately thinking about building around of the topic of Dream VS. Reality. For this game, I took on a controversial topic of mental illness (dementia/paranoia) and told the story through an old man's perspective. I want to use the game to tell a story. I learned a lot from building this one game! For the graphics of this game, I started with a free asset pack, then I realize it's not enough, so I started drawing pixel arts and tilemaps myself, then I ended up creating 80% of the art!!!

Lastly, I would really appreciate if you can check out my game and let me know what you think!!

This was my first game jam, and I think I'm satisfied with what I delivered. Is it remotely close to what I wanted? No. But taking everything into account, I got something that mostly works. I just wish I had more time on it, but that's the realities of life (I work fulltime and have a family). Definitely don't think it needs to be longer than 10 days, the duration felt kind of perfect for me, just my own time management that needs fine tuning for next jam.

On the game itself, I couldn't get my initial idea to really work, so what I put together is not really what I wanted, and it's very stripped down (only one level), but at least it functions. It was my first time working with the tilemap, and there are still things I wanted to do and just couldn't figure out in time. I even submitted with a hilarious bug (not game breaking) just because I didn't want to spend a few hours figuring out why the rigidbody didn't react the way I wanted it to 😂

To everyone that read this far, I want to congratulate for participating. Whether you finished or not doesn't matter, just taking on the challenge can be huge.

You can check out my game if you want to, it uses SO MANY FREE ASSETS 😂

not sure how to get the submission link like OP, so here's the itch.io link

Congrats for your first game jam!! I agree that time management is definitely a big thing with building a full-on games in a short time span.

Also I peaked at your game, the graphics and sound effect are amazing thus far. I will come back for a full play through after rating starts :)

This was my second game jam but the most fun because I really enjoyed making the type of game I made. I cut a few corners towards the end so I definitely could've  done a better job but I decided it’s something I want to turn into a full sized game so I wanted to begin working on it further without the constraints of free assets so I submitted it a bit early with a bit of missing polish so I could start working on a full version of it.

Submitted(+1)

I peaked at your game for a bit and the graphic and lighting is AMAZING!!

My record - 387m :D

Submitted

the trick is to basically hold W the whole time and just sorta tap A and D to adjust rotational momentum. I’m really hoping people make it to the ending lol it’s around the 600m mark. I’m pushing through an update shortly that may make controls a little less twitchy.

Submitted

The controls are convenient, but I'm a bit tired after this jam run. I almost adapted within 5 minutes.

Submitted

Totally dug the atmosphere. I think I got about 400m as well.

Submitted

Thankyou haha I think I put more effort into making it look pretty than anything else 😂

Submitted

It looks really good and plays great, I'll look out for the full version when you're done!

This was the first jam where I swore I would finish a game (not just put up a prototype) and while the game is simple I at least did some polishing this time not just a soundless vacuum to play in. haha

It was close because I had to leave for work 11 hours before the deadline! I was developing all morning and checking my watch while Unity finished the web build to be sure I'd still catch my train! Thankfully it worked out and I'm feeling pleased with my submission.

https://lanyard.itch.io/pizzaboi

Really wish I had had a magical extra day for polish, but thankfully I cared for the aesthetic and added SFX as I developed, so I feel like it isn't particularly lacking. Overall I'm particularly happy with the lighting, color, driving feel, and soundtrack.

Good luck to all jammers and I'm looking forward to playing your submissions.

Submitted(+1)

Congrats!!!!! Did you made to work in time?

Submitted

Yes, I arrived on time, thank you. Still there now, lunch break currently.

Actually my train was delayed by ten minutes. So thats another ten minutes of development time I could've had! A whole sound effect probably! 😋

For the first game jam and my first game ever in Unity, I think it went ok. There's ton more of ideas for implementing, like always, but I'm satisfied with how it is now for the 0.1 version (I tried the blog posting and the itch.io platform is fantastic for everything game developing related).

I'm still amazed by the Internet and how much resources you can find there to build almost whatever you want. And thanks to the GameDev courses, I've learned a lot, but still have tons of learning.

This was my first game jam, as I have a day job I was not able to finish it, but was a good experience and specially because I was able to practice game design skills I am learning from the "The art of game design: a book of lenses" that I'm reading. Even that I was not able to finish in time, I really got happy with the game I thought and started designing so I'm definitly going to keep developing it

Submitted(+1)

Definitely keep going and finish it.

Submitted

Had to cram harcore last night to get it done on time, and it's barely there, but a few elements turned out exactly how I'd first imagined it and it's nice having finally put something out there.

Absolutely not eager to relive the stress of an impending deadline and trying to figure out how to slot dev time into my schedule though.

Already found four glitches but we're allowed to bugfix after the deadline, right?

I started up you game and found very immersive from the start, I loved the starkness between dream/reality.

Thank you :)

I just created a game I planned much earlier because jam page said that I can just create a 2d game. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I didn't do much because I am a little tired after previous jam (Go Godot Jam 4). But I created a demo of idea and I satisfied that I created several puzzles for it. I love create puzzles :D

Cool!! I'll check it out later :) Game jam is definitely tiring, kuddos to you for doing 2 in a roll

Submitted

Well... our 3d designers and level designers left on a last hand notice

So our map was created by me in 20 minutes

But the team itself has been absolutely amazing and has worked super hard!

Submitted

Woah it must be stressing at first, glad it ended up working out! I would check it out later!!

Submitted(+1)

It  was good :D It's amazing what you have to think and tinker around, all the time! If you don't make it by yourself you have no idea how much work it is!

I love your theme about dementia/paranoia, because I work in the healthcare for elderly people!

Because I was alone, I took the realm rush game and build upon that.

If you play and rate my game, please leave me a comment! Then I will prioritise to play and rate your games.

Good

It was pretty fun :)  I went probably very much a different direction than everyone else, teaching myself a niche little game engine instead of just using Unity again.  I wanted to focus more on practicing my pixelart, game design, writing and story flow- stuff like that, which was really liberating not having to fiddle with the code so much when I'm solo and that's what I wanted to work on.  [Not that I dislike coding, mind you, it just wasn't what I wanted to spend the majority of my time on this time around.]  Also the last three times I made something in Unity it was being a butt the whole time so I didn't wanna deal with that this time :D

[To elaborate, this is my fourth game jam total, but my first time in THIS SPECIFIC jam.]

Applause for your courage for switching game engine - it is a great way to learn stuff and explore the unknown and it always makes you learn much more:)

Also, the art is sooo cute!

Submitted

Thanks a bunch! Your game was neat too! :D

Had a unique interpretation of the theme afaik, about an adventurer slaying monsters on a spreadsheet. Was short on time during the jam but I did finish the game and even managed to polish a bit, so that's a win for me.

My game is here: https://itch.io/jam/gamedevtv-jam-2023/rate/2088755.

Your game seems to have a unique interpretation of the theme too. Well done to everyone who worked hard and submitted!

Submitted

Wow!! I took a peak at your game it is definitely an interesting spin on the theme. Will play it in full later1

Submitted(+1)

It was certainly a challenge that I enjoyed. Definitely a struggle to complete everything to a bare minimum that counts as a simple game in my eyes, I worked alone and in my spare time (which isn't huge lol).

I'm happy with what I managed to create especially as it's the first time i've ever done something like this. Never made a game start to finish from scratch before.

Here is my game: https://itch.io/jam/gamedevtv-jam-2023/rate/2093361

Looking forward to seeing what everyone else managed to create. I'm sure it will be impressive.

Congrats on making a complete game!! It is always a good feeling when you complete something. Will check out your game later!

Its been a hell of a ride these past 9 days (I skipped out on the first one because I forgor💀)
But I am extremely proud of my work, it really shows these last 2/3 years of experience and this was the first game jam I ever participated in since now after finishing high school I got some free time

I did manage my time a little bit poorly and focused on details because of my perfectionism, so I downscoped a bit as well since some things were just not working as intended (looking at you mirrors coded by damn ChatGPT🤓)
But its in a very good state I can show with pride, 8 levels with couple of interesting mechanics many solutions and a ranking system; and the easter egg at the beginning really brings it together

If you do like interesting spins on puzzle games please do check out mine, you program the world around you and your objective is to power all the logic gates. it has a flashy neon "TV simulation" aesthetic
Its really nice looking and it has a couple surprises👀
Also share what ranks you got on the levels! Maybe try 100%ing the game
For more info read the actual itch page and test the game for yourself^^

Hey, congratulations to everybody who participated! :) Extra congratulations to anybody doing their first ever game jam!!

Oh gosh. How was the jam, for me? Fun, but so stressful, trying to fix all my plethora of bugs!

Our team discussed ideas early on, but I never quite got totally 100% sure of the specifics of exactly how the gameplay would work, and so I tried coding a bunch of ideas that seemed like they would make sense together for fun gameplay.

However, I kept running into bugs. Eventually, I had a bunch of features not quite working perfectly, and had to do a lot of downscoping of features on the final day.

Thankfully, I had been anticipating this possibility, and trying to keep each feature programmed (relatively) separately from the others, so I could hopefully disable them without breaking the game (too much).

And, I had been compiling a list of last-minute changes to make if it turned out I wouldn't be able to get the game into quite what I wanted. In the last few hours, I ended up having to turn the game into more of a sandbox experience, than a game with objectives.

Here's what we submitted: https://kooky.itch.io/beaker-beasties (plays in web browser)

(I listed instructions, controls and known bugs in the game description. Let me know what you like and don't like!)

Quick description: It's a sandbox-y simulation of 9 species of tiny creatures that you can interact with by looking into a microscope in your science lab. They can run around, chase each other, eat each other, you can feed them and watch them grow, and lure them around or scare them with your mouse cursor. Oh, and just right-click a bug to follow it around.

Very excited to try out other people's entries! Congratulations again, everyone!

I got my butt kicked by this game jam, which was also my first game jam (I'm solo on this project). In the end I ran out of time so I had to compromise what I wanted to implement, but I managed to get something that's playable and has a single level to complete.
I learned a whole lot about Unity, this was a great experience to learn more about it and get some experience with how Unity works and some of the quirks it has. Overall I really enjoy using Unity and will definitely continue to use it in the future, as it really makes some things incredibly easy and quick which i appreciate very much now.

I made a 3D platformer that is restricted to 2D axis.
