I like how the tree background was drawn; it seems scribbled and only half there, which is a very interesting aesthetic.
It was a very bold choice to do a visual novel for a game jam, which I respect you for. I think you should have worked a little more on the interface, because its a bit out of place with your art style.
Well done on the game!
Thanks so much! I wanted to customize the interface, for sure - it was on my list right after the music, which fell to the cutoff (it's higher up the list than providing the missing pieces of background art to be honest XD ) Thanks so much for your feedback and your compliments ^_^
Visual novel in a game jam :o After the game i was questioning my existence which is first for a game jam game to make me do that :D
Like others said the game definetly need music and enviroment sounds like birds chriping in woods or people talking at the shopping area etc. Also the contrast between the background and the character is not enough you should work on that.
Other then these i think its a bold desicion to make a visual novel for the game jam. Original take on the theme and interesting ideas well done :D
I'm so glad you found it interesting ^_^ I did regret that the art didn't come out with enough contrast; I expect I'll be able to do a deal better with my next game, thanks to the learning-lots-of-things phase that was this jam for me, and the feedback everyone's been giving, including yours - much appreciated! ^_^
Thanks very much for playing and for sharing your thoughts ^_^
That was an unexpected angle to the theme ! I'm not into visual novels, but that was a really interesting experience, congrats =)
Thank you very much!! ^_^ Glad you found it interesting.
nice visual novel.
Thank you!! ^_^
This turned existential quickly ;) I'm not big on visual novels, but can tell you put a lot of effort into the dialog. Music would definitely have been a good addition, but I understand that time was tight
Hehe ^_^ Yeah, I am planning to do an update (though it'll probably be something like a month later rather than immediately after the jam rating) which will be able to have the music in it. ^_^ Thanks so much for playing!
I don't normally like visual novels but this one really got my attention all the way through. Very interesting. I don't think I understood everything but it does make think about it. Good job, the art is also very cool.
Thank you so much - I'm so happy because thinking about it is exactly what it's meant to do! ^_^ Thanks for playing ^_^
Original take on the theme! Don't see many virtual novels in game jams so this was a really nice surprise! Very nice art with a compelling story! Great job!
Thanks so much! I'm very glad you liked it! ^_^
I can't really say much about this game since I very rarely plays visual novels, but it is definitely one of the most unique take on the theme. Great job!
Thanks very much for the compliment and for playing it! ^_^
Interesting ideas passed through text, I am missing audio sadly which gives a great deal of feel... Good job though, I love seeing games that give a shot to stories!
Thank you! Glad you found it interesting ^_^ I do strongly wish I'd been able to put together the audio, but I did not have time during the jam even though I completely intended to at the start XD I still hope to do so after the jam period ends.
Thanks again for your comment and for playing! ^_^
Ren'py seems like a powerful tool! I found the thoughts of the protagonist interesting, although I didn't really get what the unknown voice was supposed to be, and eventually started skipping a lot of its lines until it stopped asking questions. I was able to finish in one go. I think going text heavy can be pretty risky for a jam game, so good job getting me to read more than any other game so far!
Ahaha, well, I'm glad you read as much as you wanted and (I hope) not more. It definitely made sense that it'd be less likely to be what people in the jam would go for, but apparently my take on the theme was all philosophical and this was how I found myself able to best express it :D I think some of it is open to interpretation, though of course I have my own ideas about it too.
Ren'Py is quite helpful! They have good documentation and forums too, from what I've seen.
At any rate thank you very much for your feedback and for playing ^_^
I love story driven games, this one is really great. A full screen option would be appreciated though, it was hard for me to read it in my monitor. The art could have more contrast too, but despite that I really liked your writing style and the message you put into the game.
Ah, thank you!
I missed setting up the fullscreen option and don't think I'm supposed to adjust that until after the jam, now. : / I will definitely set it afterwards. If you have the option to make your browser go fullscreen, i.e. by pressing F11, I think that's the only option for fullscreen in the browser at the moment. Sorry about that!
But anyway thank you so much for your feedback, I'm very glad you liked the content ^_^
I didn't expect to see hand drawings! They're really nice. I'm not much of a text adventurer myself, but i wanted to try this so i did, and it was pretty good. "we'll have to agree to disagree on that" lmao. Anyway, good job!
I'm very happy you liked the art! I was very nervous about it :D I'm glad you decided to try, and that you enjoyed it! Thanks so much!
Just like many of the comments here, I haven't heard of Ren'Py (will check it out though thanks to your game!) as well as your submission is different from the rest since it's also the first visual novel I've seen submitted to the jam! I chose the forest and it was funny how the unknown voice was trying to grasp that thoughts/feelings don't have roots xD
My favorite lesson that I learned was that "my thoughts and feelings are together with me, no matter what... Rather than trying to leave them behind, I can take a good look at them and sort through them gradually."
I truly enjoyed it! Going to play again to click on the other options!
So happy you found Ren'Py and enjoyed my game ^_^ I hope you also enjoy the other options if you play again ^_^ Thanks so much!!
I love hand-drawn games and it was super nice to try yours:) maybe as suggestion i would suggest to add some music - for more atmosphere.
I'm glad you enjoyed trying it ^_^ I definitely agree on the music - I intended to add some, but just did not end up with enough time : / I do intend to do that post-jam. Thanks so much!
Good visual novel. The art is great. The overall presentation is pretty good too !
I wish there were some music to back up the story. Maybe just some wind for the forest for example could have been a nice addition :)
Ah, my greatest regret! :D I did intend to add music and really wanted to - think that'll be a post-jam update, because I completely agree with you that music is important. It turned out that the writing, art, and coding took most of my work time - especially the writing! :O
Happy you liked it though, thanks so much ^_^
Fun! Decided to open my eyes both of the times. I'll consider that as a good ending
Nice! I'm glad you had fun ^_^ (I think that's a valid conclusion)
First visual novel I've seen in a game jam, and it was great! I really loved the art.
Aw, thank you! Very happy you liked it ^_^
Awesome story and wonderfully sketched art! I've never heard of this cool visual novel engine~ Super neat visual novel entry to the jam! Please check out mine when you have time. :D
Aww, thank you! Very glad you liked it and yeah, Ren'Py is very friendly to use. I shall be happy to check out your game shortly! ^_^
Wow, I was hooked! Did you draw the art too? That's amazing, I didn't expect to see this sort of thing, but well done. I want to go try the other paths now! It must have taken ages to write that out and code it in, hats off to you!
Goodness, thank you so much! ^_^ Yes, I did draw the art. (Had a minor disagreement with my printer connection when I went to scan some of the pencil sketches though!) I DID spend nearly all the work time on the writing, so much so that I couldn't put together music for it. Was thinking I'd perhaps in the future post-jam do an update for that and the couple of completely absent background art pieces (see: solid colors that are not black). ^_^ At any rate yay, very glad you liked it! Thank you ^_^
Interesting -- I didn't expect to see a visual novel. I don't know much about the genre so I can't give much feedback. Although, maybe consider changing the font and colors so the text is easier to read. Good luck :)
Thanks! ^_^ I could certainly stand to improve on all of it! Think it may go slightly easier on the eyes in fullscreen or downlaod. But anyway thanks for checking it out ^_^
