Game Description
What is KATAMARI MEATBALL? KATAMARI MEATBALL is an action-arcade game where you forge a meatball out of the flesh of medieval citizenry. With you and your meat cult, cause havoc in the local peasant farmstead by rolling your ball all over their livelihoods. Do you have what it takes to forge the meatball? CONTROLS: 1) WASD - Movement, 2) MOUSE - Aim LMB (Left Mouse Button) - Slap meatball, 3) Hold LMB (Left Mouse Button) - Slap meatball harder

How does your game tie into the theme?
KATAMARI MEATBALL was made and submitted as part of the 68th Godot Wild Jam. The theme for this jam was Forge. As part of this theme, the duo at Hangover Sunshine felt inspired by body horror and the concept of forging human flesh together. This led to the idea of having a cultist roll a meatball—attempting to forge it into a massive sphere of destruction through the absorption of human flesh.

Really original idea, I like it! Simple but fun, good job!

This was really fun and a very cool interpretation of the jam theme!! I thought having to move around a character to roll your meatball was a nice change to the Katamari inspiration!

I think my one little gripe is the archers feel like they fire too fast, and (I’m not totally sure about this) they seem to fire THROUGH the meatball. For me, basically, when they start showing up, I die really quick. This could be a skill issue on my part, but it just feels the archers attack too quickly.

Other than that, this is a really good game!! Excellent work!!

Aaaay~! Thanks for playing and glad you had fun!

The archer situation was an oversight, initially, we wanted some differentiation between the wizard and the ranger, and decided on a piercing effect for the ranger. Might've not been the best decision with how many enemies pop up. We'll have our next update ready for when the jam ends removing that (we are also reducing the fire rate a bit so they won't attack as much / as fast). Know you can kill them with your slap, and heal from their death, but def would be nice to have some actual defense.

Either way, thank you for the compliments, feedback, and time playing our game!

I had a lot of fun playing this!  My quick observations are:
-Enemy projectiles maybe shouldn't pass through the meatball and hit me, felt a little cheap
-Needed a little more feedback when I got hit
-Score ought to be in integers, floats are distracting

Other than that, I really enjoyed myself.  Loved the feel of the game, destroying the village was a lot of fun!  Thanks for the game!

Developer

Heyhey!

Thanks for playing our game and for the feedback! Will look into improving feedback for the player getting hit and also make adjustment to the scores. Do know that the score section is a bit buggy atm (the jam experience got to us lol). In regards to the ranged units, we  initially wanted some differentiation between the wizard and the ranger, and decided on a piercing effect for the ranger. Might've not been the best decision with how many enemies pop up. We have our next update ready for when the jam ends removing that. Know you can kill them with your slap, and heal from their death, but def would be nice to have some actual defense.

Either way, thank you for playing and for your feedback!

Ahhh, ok, I didn't honestly realize the arrows were passing through and not the wizards' attacks.  In the heat of it I just knew I was standing on the other side of the meatball from enemies and still getting hurt, and sorta went "hey, I'm out of the line of fire!"

Developer

No yeah, it should be the arrows, but we'll look into it again to confirm. Wondering with so much chaos going on if maybe a couple of wizard attacks slipped through the meatball.

I really like the UI. Black on red, with white highlights is very cool. The polish on the menu is nice too, the rolling meatball transition.

My first run, I thought i was the meatball. Died shortly after I realised I was actually the hooded man.

Then I really got "rolling" (get it?) on my second try. And i found the townsquare, and decimated the people there. Awesome.

Submitted(+1)

Crazy concept, but really fun to play, one small issue was that on my first run I ended up with negative score haha

Developer(+1)

Hey hey~!

Thank you thank you for the feedback and for calling out that bug! We will take a look at what's going on with that killscore and get that sorted. Do know that if you die quickly, without enough kills, it will balance out toward the negatives. One of those things you miss when that deadline approaches.

Glad to hear you found it fun to play and appreciate the recognition of our craziness. Cheers!

Fun game! It's nice to see something unique in a game jam.  The art and animations are great, little details like the windmill turning add a lot of depth to the world.

Submitted(+1)

Awesome game! I couldn't really get hang of controlling the ball, and I kept dying, but really it's just my skill issue :) The graphics and audio were great, very high quality!

Developer(+1)

Aaay, thanks for playing~! Def agree the game is a bit difficult at the moment, we are planning on pushing an update after the jam with some balancing to make ball movement a bit easier and enemies not so as lethal. Again, appreciate the feedback and time rolling our meatball!

Submitted(+1)

Awesome ! Very fun game :D The concept is stupid but hilarious, juggling the ball around is hard but rewarding, esp once it starts destroying houses.

Developer

Yoyo! Thanks for playing~! Funny enough, destruction was one of the last things we added before submission; glad people are finding enjoyment out of it as much as we are. Cheers!

A gory medieval version of the Playstation 2 classic :-D what's not to like.  Controls took a little getting used to, but overall a very solid and fun production. Well done!

Developer

Hey! Thanks for playing our game and glad someone appreciated the referential humor there. We def agree controlling the ball is a bit of getting used to. We tried going for a more chaotic pinball approach to ball travel, however, can def see how annoying it can be when trying to aim precisely for big crowds of peons. Regardless, appreciate the feedback and time playing our game!

Fun game! It definitely took some getting used to controlling the meatball but I eventually got the hang of it. The art was very clean and I liked the fact the meatball was 3d - kinda adds to the cosmic horror aspect of a bunch of 2d characters seeing a 3d incomprehensible object rolling towards them.

I did notice a bug where on the score screen, the "Civilians Killed" always listed 0. For example, on my last game it said I killed 0, but had a total score on that line of 2400.

Hola!

Thanks for playing and for calling out that bug~! We'll go ahead and take a look at that bizarre civilian kill score issue you ran into. Wondering if maybe it got confused and counted those civilians as cultists (we have a feature in the game where the cultists convert the civilians into fellow members of their club).

Regardless, thank you so much for playing! And also, glad to hear about your excitement with the cosmic horror of the three-dimensional meat. We are big horror buffs so we are glad to see people making the connection.

Very fun! Music enhances the atmosphere of the game and it feels great! Art and color palette are pleasing to look at, and the game mechanic is very original. Great job!

Submitted(+1)

Hilarious game! Great presentation, the ball was awkward to control at first, but then when you get the hang of it, crushing people is very fun. Awesome work!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Aaaay, thanks for playing and so much for your feedback~! Meatball do be awkward with movement at the moment; we wanted to go for a more chaotic approach but can def see the sacrifice to control (especially when you need to be a bit precise to hit enemies). Hoping with our next update to polish that interaction a bit). Cheers!

Submitted(+1)

Great visuals! I did have the meatball disappear at one point and didn't know if I was supposed to be able to make a new one or if that was supposed to be a fail state?

Developer(+1)

Heyo, thanks for playing! As of right now, if the meatball gets too much damage from ranged units, it will slowly shrivel into nothing and delete itself. We didn't get time to add any warning or polish to this situation, so the player gets screwed and it becomes a soft lock 😅. Wondering if maybe that is what happened to you when your meatball disappeared. Def something we can work on communicating better or fix in the future.

Regardless, thank you so much for playing and for the comment!

great work with the visuals, it was all very clean! i couldn't quite figure out how to get the meatball going where i wanted it to go, and after a while i would get swarmed with enemies and couldnt move it anyway. it would be cool if the meatball stopped projectiles from hitting you so you can hide behind it!

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed the visuals! Will make sure to pass the love to our artist, "S."

Something that we are hoping to do with the next update for this game is make the meatball control a little more polished. As of right now, we wanted to take a chaotic pinball approach, but can def see how frustrating it can be. Also, noted about the projectiles. We wanted some differentiation between the wizard and the ranger, and decided on a piercing effect for the ranger. Might've not been the best decision if you end up getting a bunch of rangers from all different angles. Know you can kill them with your slap but def would be nice to have some defense.

Either way, thank you for playing and for your feedback!

Nice work!  Was the meatball 3D?  I was trying to figure out how the rolling worked.

Developer(+1)

Yoyoyo!

Thank you for kudos! "ImPasta," our programmer, got it to work, so I'm just going to copy-paste their explanation. They are much smarter than me and will do justice to the meatball:

"The meatball is in fact 3D, but the physics are in 2D. We have a separate 3D scene for the ball and set up a render layer for it. The ball is put on the render layer and the camera is set to only "view" that specific layer. There is a directional light facing directly down on the ball to remove as many shadows as possible. We pipe it into the 2D asset by using a Viewport and turn off the 3D camera's background so it's just the ball. The ball rolling is based on the 2D velocity, which the ball then rotates only in the x and z axis based on the 2D velocity vector's x and y components. The scaling gets wonky depending on if you increase the mesh's radius/height or scale, with the radius/height being more consistent. The camera also has to move a bit to prevent the ball from turning into a meat cube. Probably a better way to do it but, in a pinch, it was good enough!"

Wow thanks for the detailed response.  Cool stuff.

In case you want to see it in engine, our source code is available! Under the prefabs/entities/Fleshball.tscn and prefabs/entities/Ball3D.tscn, to be more precise!

I really liked the game, but I wish the 'meatball' would grow faster haha

The sounds are very fun and I loved the graphics!

Developer

Yoyo, thank you so much for playing and for your feedback!

Our goal next update is to polish the speed of the game, def can agree at the moment that the meatball progression is a bit lengthy.

Again, appreciate the love for the art and sound~!

Amazing game! The music put a smile on my face, and the game over sound... LOL

A bit tricky to control and actually survive, but the chaos and calamity was just too fun! Had a great time playing :)

Developer

Howdy!

Thank you so much for playing and glad you enjoyed it!

We are hoping to push an update after the jam to balance the game a bit more. Your feedback here is definitely heard and greatly appreciated!

Again, thank you so much for playing, and happy it put a smile on your face~!

Hilarious game! The music is so fun and I had a blast meatrolling the peasants once I figured out the controls haha. I really want to know the backstory of where this meatball originated and wtf this cult is all about XD Excellent stuff!

Submitted(+1)

Super fun! I like hwo you can use the push mechanic both to push the ball and as a weapon! Fun art and gameplay is satisfying!
