Ooo nice a 3D game! The charactersare cute and the idle animation is interesting. The BGM is spooky and the 3D sound is scary. I got jumpscared by the big guy showing up behind me. I like the concept of not looking at the enemies. The game became quite laggy at the end and sadly I couldn’t move away from the enemies lol. Overall a unique and interesting experience, with good ambience! Good job!

The visual representation of the drums is indeed a nice touch. Awesome game as a first entry to GWJ!

I accidentally beat the game after the fire went out and I just ran away from the night marchers, all the while picking up firewood. Then the moon went down and it was sunrise!

Especially the 3d models and the programming was well done. I can see this is made by people who know what they are doing.

The visual drum beats are a nice touch to tell the player where not to look, I visited Hawaii a few years ago and heard of this I think my friend said you were suppose to laydown and cover your eyes and let them pass or something, pretty spooky, actually so cool to see it as a game.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I had on my list of stretch goals to be able to lay your character down as a way to avoid their eyes. Turns out with all the performance issues I had to drastically cut down the number of night marchers that spawn and it is really easy to avoid looking at them :) Thank you for playing!

Nice game with a really engaging cutscene. It had good atmosphere as well. The blue sound markers for the drums were also really cool. However the game def lacked some polish. Aside from the framerate drops, It wasn't clear when i was picking up the firewood or not. Also i didn't understand the role of the campfire as i cud survive pretty easily by just not looking at the enemies.

A cool entry :) I especially like the visual representation of the drums. Also, the cutscene was pretty nice! Some incentive to come back to the fire would be helpful, I guess (also I've kind of got lost in the end). The framerate issues are unfortunate, hope you get to fix them at some point.

The beginning cutscene is pretty funny and engaging, a great way to draw people in! I like the 3D artstyle, it definitely makes the game stand out amongst the crowd. However, the game seems to lag everytime I pick up firewood, and there's a visible FPS counter on the screen I can't really figure out how to disable. The idea is a great one, but I think with some more time and polish the execution could be great as well. It was still enjoyable, and over all a pretty good submission.

Developer

Thank you for playing our game! I left the fps score in there because of the dropping frame rate, though probably should have put it behind an optional setting. First time completing a game in Godot and I thought 3d would be doable...I think my next game will be 2d. I ran into so many performance issues. Though I learned a lot and hope to improve on performance in particular on my next entry.

I think we've got a case of overscoping here, if I can be blunt.  All the ideas are there and functional, but none of them alone are polished enough to feel engaging or compelling.  That's not to diminish the sense of accomplishment you should feel; you crossed the finish line with a project I was able to play, and in a weeks' time that's something to be proud of for sure!  3D modeling and animation alone can be a nightmare, and I always think it's a bold move to go 3d in a jam. Good for you for taking the risk, and great job finishing!  Thanks for giving us a game to play!

Developer (1 edit)

100% agree. I thought we had an okay handle in scope, and then throughout the week kept cutting things and cutting more things. But I didn’t think about ensuring what was in got polished. I am excited for the next game jam to try and see how much I learned about creating manageable scope to polish.

Thank you for playing our game!

Great job tackling a 3D game like this and what a cool piece of folklore to pick! If anyone else is interested in learning more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightmarchers

I liked the drum beat indications and navigating the 3D world worked pretty well! My only problem was I lost the campfire and could not find it again, plus I was scared to look around too much for it because I didn't want to see the Nightmarchers. I ended up surviving the night regardless (and with a lot of firewood to boot!) but I feel like I might have missed part of the game.

Good job and great entry!

Developer

Thanks for including a wikipedia link. I totally forgot to do that in the description. I do think the campfire mechanic needed some more work. It was supposed to be if you keep adding wood to the fire the spirits leave you alone, but if you let it get dark they follow you. It is pretty easy to avoid them though even if they are following. Thank you for the feedback!

I think the 3D art is very well done, but the gameplay lacks a little polish, I think the alert when there is a spirit nearby should not rotate with the camera because you end up losing where it comes from haha. but overall it's a good job! :D

Developer

I'll pass your positive remarks on art to the artist, thank you! I got caught up in the visual indicator idea but agree it needed more work. I tried to make it not rotate with the camera and instead look at the closest marcher, but it doesn't work as well as I would like.

Very bold making a 3D game in a game jam, kudos making something that plays and has quite suitable assets! I loved the basis of the game, I wasn't familiar with this particular folklore and a game is a great way to really suck someone into such a thing.  It'd be nice if the gameplay had a little more to it, and I'd like an indication whether or not I can get firewood from a given tree, but I imagine there wasn't a lot of time to iterate on that during the jam!

I like The models in the Game, Goodjob👏

Controls were a little janky, but I like the concept of sneaking out to gather resources while an enemy hunts you which can be identified by sound. I feel like this could really be expanded on.

Submitted

I like the idea of using the spirit's drum beats as a danger sign while going through the map however, I feel like because I could see them from pretty far I was expecting to hear it before it happened. I also got some lag spikes every now and then. Besides that though good job! Your 3d environment and assets were consistent with the atmosphere I'd expect.

Developer(+1)

That is a good point. Especially if you were out in the forest you probably should hear the drums before you see the marchers. Thank you for the feedback and playing our game!

I collect sticks to live longer to collect more sticks to hear drums to live long enough to hear drums. Drums. Drums. They are here. Marchers. Wood. Fire. Gone. Ai-ia!

So, fine concept, but quite repetitive that you only collect wood and that's it.

When you go for credits, there's no turning back. Just wait. I would like that to be fixed.

Every few seconds the game lags for a little, dunno what's the problem. That ruins the gameplay quite a lot.

Other than that, I loved the intro cutscene. Cool explanation of the story.

Developer

Thank you for playing and the feedback. Totally see your point on the repetitiveness of the gameplay. Next time I think I want to try a 2d game to focus more on user experience and polish and not get stuck fixing issues related to the 3d space but definitely learned a lot.
