Interesting approach to standard fighting/battle game with the curved torus world. The story telling aspect was interesting and gave it a nice folklore feel, would have been nice if the characters didn't jump down to the next line. You can do this by filling in the full text and then changing the color of the text.
The artwork, sfx, and music was good. I found the combat a little difficult - made it through the maze but died shortly after.
Nice submission.
that is a good point on the text! although we might need a mask for changing the color locally? A different approach might be to precompute the line wraps based on the word lengths. Also not quite easy, I think, unless there is already a helper method for this.
Thanks for playing and the suggestion!
yeah, if you are writing to multicolored texture this would be tricky (I always had solid color BG), maybe a shader could help. Yes the simplest but most work is to place newline characters where wrapping should occur - agree if there is some pre-written code that would help.
Having the gameplay take place on the surface of a torus is very unique! The idea of having the story be told as you do it is clever, too, but in practice, my story ended up with about a dozen pages of the words "Branterin did shiv a bloke" over and over again. Quite often, the pen couldn't keep up with how quickly I was getting into combat encounters.
Agreed! Maybe we could accumulate the same actions somehow, either by waiting for delay (e.g. until there are no enemies in the area anymore) or by updating the already written text.
Thanks for the feedback!
Putting the world on a torus? Brilliant, I loved that. The storybook was great, the narration unfolding as you act is a wonderful way to let the player feel like they're in the driver's seat for the story.
Thanks a lot!
Engaging visuals, and interesting combination with the story book chronicling the adventures as you are fighting the enemies.
Thanks! :)
What a terrible fate for an afterlife! Running in terror from your enemies for eternity! lol
Jokes aside, really cool concept for a game. The torus is such a cool world design, and the book popping up with little updates is super cool. I completed 3 or 4 loops around the torus and was a little disappointed that there weren't any new cards to choose on subsequent loops, it would have been cool to see more variety there, and it would encourage players to keep going. That being said it was still pretty fun and the idea in general is really cool and has a lot of potential. The intro cutscene and the music loop do a lot to enhance the mood of the game, almost feels somber. I feel bad for our hero Kjellaug
thank you for the detailed feedback!
we didn't have any time to make more upgrades, implementing the torus movement, battle system etc. just took too much time - but yeah, some variety would have been good. Still nice to see you enjoyed it!
Yeah, I can imagine the torus movement took a bit of doing, I'm not even sure where I would start with solving that! It works really well, y'all did great
Very solid mechanics! A good start for a game to continue. Could you tell me which button I need to press to take the sword at the beginning? I get killed very fast with fist attack only.
if you get closer to the sword, you should see a hint that you can pick it up with the E or F button.
theres also a button to drop the current weapon: Q - if you would ever want to go back to using your fists ;)
What a great idea about the book!
The only thing that “disappointed” me was that I couldn’t interact with the book once it died. damn trackpad! ;)
thanks! and sorry - I guess we will need to make the mouse wheel controls remappable
The level design was pretty unique, I liked it. I felt like it was actually in the world of mythology. I also liked the app icon.
I wish I could open and close the book since it took up big screen real estate. Other than that, keep up the good work :D
you're right - maybe some menu option to scale the book would have helped as well. Thanks for the feedback!
Love the torus level - don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a game like this.
Also loved the book being written as my character explored and fought, particularly how the maze took me “2 days” to get through. Might be nice to add a day/night cycle… though how that works on a torus shaped world I have no idea.
The only thing that didn’t seem to work for me was that I couldn’t scroll the book after I died. Might be because I’m on a MacBook Air with a touch pad?
Hey, thanks a lot for your feedback! I agree, a day and night cycle would be a nice touch. I'd make it the same as in other 3d games, disregarding the torus. I'm sorry you can't scroll through the book, we've set it up so it uses the mouse wheel.
Thanks for playing! ;)
we only implemented scrolling with the mouse wheel, sorry if that does not work for you. just as a note, you can scroll during the gameplay as well.
It took a bit for me to realise the level is a giant torus. That's a cool idea!
I agree with the other comments. Great concept and quite fun to play. I could have used more healing, because I'm bad.
Thanks for playing ;)
Great work!
The narrating storybook is very clever, seems like a mechanic with lots of great uses.
I was a little lost on what my goal was but other than that I enjoyed it.
Well done!
Thanks for the feedback :)
I like the concept behind the book a lot and feel like it has a lot of potential. While I was playing I found the fact it said it took me 5 days to finish the maze very funny as I legit had both the entrance and the exit aligned. I would like a game where those ironic moments happened a lot more and where the narrator (the book) would distort what really was happening maybe because it wanted to write a cooler story. I hope you will try to improve on the idea, it is a very good one. Also props for the music <3
I totally agree with you - wish we have had more time to work the story, I feel like there is some potential here.
Thanks for the feedback! :)
Really cool concept. I got to a point where the story wouldn't progress and I don't know if I just got to the end of the story or if I wasn't doing the right things to move it on, was just going through killing people. Would make a very good full game with some sort of tree of story lines. Very well done
Hey, thanks for your feedback! :)
The story should not stop though, you might have found a bug there. I might have a look at this later.
I liked the concept of the book that tells the story, I feel it was original, but I think the book could have been smaller, or have appeared only when it is updated, because I feel like it gets in the way a little being there so big on the screen.
Still, it's a great job, the art and music are very well done :D
Thanks for your feedback :)
Initially, the idea was to have the book somewhere in the background, but very huge (similar to the main screen), but it did not work out like this in the end - probably would have looked weird with the movement around the torus. Maybe we find some time to make this less present in the future
Alright, so first thoughts when I got into it was "guess I just gotta walk around this grass for all eternity" until I found the rusty sword, so maybe put something at the start explaining you need to go around killin people and buildin your folklore. There was also an unexplained loading bar at the bottom that just slowly crept towards 100%, made me think the game was gonna blow up or smthn if I didn't beat it in time. Some small bugs, like Arrows didn't shoot out of the bow at correct rotation, like they went straight but they were tilted down. Also, I didn't know I could run out of arrows until I just had to go around punching people with my bow xD. Overall, interesting submission, not alot of UI polish tho.
We actually created a tutorial for our game and unfortunately forgot to reactivate it at the end.
Hey, thank you for playing the game :)
Fortunately, we were allowed to upload the version with the fixed intro, so now you can see it in the start of the game (if not turned off in the game settings)
Aw cool! It’s great that you were able to upload a fixed version, hopefully you get some more traffic towards game
