Game Description
The Canterberry Tales is a narrative game about exploring a medieval land of bards and berries across storybook levels, taking on the role of a feudal fruit and discovering what awaits you. It is our first game and we hope you enjoy it!

How does your game tie into the theme?
When we saw the theme, we quickly honed in on the importance of storytelling to folklore and decided we wanted to channel a classic story about spinning tales. From there, the game designed itself! (with lots of help from us)

I really enjoyed navigating in the world. I did get lost, but it was still enjoyable. The dialog was really nice, and the game felt well polished. I think it would have been fun if the buildings/town fit the fruit theme as well. They felt out of place style wise. Really liked the forest scenes though.

Developer

Thank you so much!! We're looking to add a few signs that will make navigation a tad easier after the jam. We were going for a medieval look with the village, but agree that we could've added some callbacks to the fruit villagers in the building design. Thanks so much for playing!

Adorable experience.  That reminded me of the old Sierra Quest For Glory games a bit, but fruit-based.  Other than the lack of music, a pretty fantastic experience.  I do wish there'd been some sort of crescendo of action. Not necessarily combat, but perhaps a chase scene or a small amount of platforming between dialogue.  I can't really complain, though.  The characters were cute, the writing was good, and a few of the jokes got a chuckle out of me.  Well done, thanks for the game!

Developer

Thanks for your support! We're messing around with a v2 that would include music and some other QOL fixes.

Charming game with a lot of great dialogue and design on the characters. I loved the simple solution of the backgrounds having multiple levels of depths to create an intricate network of scenes. The use of finding the other player characters yourself is also really well done. As people suggested, making the navigating a little easier to do or faster would help not to get lost that easily. Other than that, great job on this entry! Beautiful characters and narrative.

I don't know if it was just me but for some reason there seemed to be no music in the game? The SFX from dialog were there tho.

Developer

Thanks for checking it out! I really liked your game and am glad you liked ours as well. Credits in particular to the other two members of my team for most of the dialogue and to @merunicorn for the art. Music was a stretch goal for us that didn’t quite make the cut - we’ve added some for a post-jam update. Thanks again!

This game is just so full of charm. My viewers and I loved it. The navigation is confusing at first, but it's also really cool and pretty unique take on 2.5D. A simple map or some roadsigns or something could help alleviate that confusion.

Regardless, the characters are adorable, the art style is so good and cute, there's just so many voice lines with unique characterization, I audibly gasped at a few plot twists, and I'm really disappointed that the inanimate mushroom couldn't make it to the party after I placed the invitation next to it.

Incredible game!

Thank you!

Developer(+2)

Thanks so much for the kind words - we’re glad you enjoyed it! We agree with you regarding roadsigns and @nuedleman, one of our devs, actually suggested adding some roadsigns shortly after the jam closed. Thanks for playing (and for inviting the mushroom, another @nuedleman addition)!

Developer

It was so fun to watch you stream the game, thanks so much for playing!!

Very cute!! I can't praise the art style enough. The dialogue was very charming. It got a bit tedious having to walk back and forth, but overall the quest style gameplay was pretty enjoyable.

Developer

@merunicorn did all of the art and she’s incredibly talented. We hear you on the tediousness of walking back and forth, toying with a few ways to make it easier after the jam. Thanks for playing!

Liked how you could move from foreground to background in the game.

The graphics were very rich and detailed and I enjoyed this a lot.

Some background music could help for this game but I could understand it's really hard to do it in such a short time.

Developer

Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed! We totally agree about the music, we're looking to add some after the jam ends!

First off, the "Run fruit experience" on the embed really made me chuckle. You can believe next time I do a jam I'm going to set a custom noun for our game!  And the jester's puns REALLY got me.  Your sense of humor is delightful and the art style is cute and very easy on the eyes. And I adore how you implemented the transfer takeover wildcard!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words!! @renoceros changed the noun and it made us all chuckle too, haha.

Submitted(+1)

I didn't expect to have this fun from the screenshots. But the graphics fit perfect while playing. I had to not stop the run until I finished the game! :-)

I'm not sure if adding context specific music may even increase the feeling, Maybe.

But overall a really great game!

Developer

Glad we exceeded your expectations + that you finished the game!! We agree that music would be a nice touch, we'll look into adding some after the jam is over. Thanks so much for playing!!

Cuuuute! Lovely and original game. I liked the look of the trees, just like in a children’s book. This must be one of my favorite entries of the wild strawberry jam.

Developer

Wow, thank you so much!! And glad you liked the trees haha, we definitely were going for a storybook look.

Great character design, the environment art is very cute aswell. Impressive amount of quality writting, the world felt very alive for me ! The quests were easy to follow, just got a bit lost in the princess one but the bard tips helped out a lot. Congrats!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much, we're glad you liked the world building! Happy to hear the bard tips helped out too!

I mean, look at this little guy!

OK so every character is cute and despite all the cuteness, the writing was pretty solid. I enjoyed the character-swap mechanism to expand the story from different perspectives. Nicely done!

Developer(+1)

He's just a little guy! Hehe, glad you enjoyed the writing + the character swap, thanks so much for playing!!

This was a delight to play, the clever use of space, the writing, a solid experience!

Developer

Thank you so much!!

Very clever use of the forest backgrounds and a good way to add more interactivity to the visual novel format. Well done!

Developer

Thank you!!

I really like the cool concept with moving through the same level but in different layers. The jester slowly running out of jokes is also just perfect.

Developer

Thank you so much, @renoceros came up with the concept! And glad you liked the jester's writing haha

The game has a nice concept with layers and looks charming. However, it also looks very unfinished and you kind of just walk around and talk to people.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing and sorry you found it unfinished! It is a narrative story game, so the gameplay is focused on talking to the different characters to get items and to progress the story - this won't be everyone's cup of tea and that's okay. If you have specific feedback about what looks unfinished, we'd love to hear it! Appreciate you trying it out and leaving feedback!

Fun and engaging game, cool story and progression and cute art, everything feels very cohesive. Reminds me of childhood puzzle narrative games with a little like adventure quest or dragon fable. I invited the bird on the bard show, I forgot to look for it on the show idk if it's really there.

It feels complete just no music, I thought there will be a music on bard's show

Developer(+2)

Thanks for playing! We were definitely channeling the types of games you mentioned. Music was a stretch goal for us that didn't quite make the cut, but we hope to add it after the jam!

Submitted(+2)

A lovely game with super great visuals, unique chara design, a good humor, and cool quests. I loved it from start to end and am clearly amazed by the universe you could create for a single jam. Amazing job, please continue to make games !

Developer(+1)

So kind! Thanks, I really appreciate it.

We hope to make some more!

The navigation system confused the heck out of me at first BUT after grasping the idea i lowkey loved it. Epecially the joke of running through the same screen in the fore, middle and background (which did not help with the confusion). Writing and humour was great, the portraits were hilarious. Handdrawn art was chefskiss*. Giving my daughter a strawberry plushie was peak gaming history. While storytelling is the core of folklore... i kinda didnt see the theme used much in it. What are some other of those Canterberry tales the bard tells? Maybe a few of the Npcs could have filled us in in rumours, letting us know what folklore would look like in this world, are they afraid of the legendary Fruitmuncher with 200 teeth? the ghastly juiceblender beast? Either way, storytelling was neat. navigation confusing but genius at the same time and wholesome as heck. This deserves to be seen for sure.

Developer

We're glad you liked it! We had fun with the almost Scooby-Doo-esque running through the different depths of some levels too, though I can definitely see there being a bit of a learning curve before the movement clicks. Love the recommendations to deepen the lore! Thanks for playing.

Submitted(+2)

Ok so i have questions.

1. Are the art all handdrawn?

2. Who was the genius that came up with the 2.5D navigation system?

3. Who wrote the jester lines and where can I buy his next book?

4. WHY HASNT MORE PEOPLE PLAYED THIS!

I loved everything about this game! The art style, the clever writing, the quests, the movement system. Everything flowed so smoothly that I just HAD to finish the game! Kudos to the entire team, everyone clearly played their parts to the utmost!

Congratulations on an incredible entry! Easily one of my favourites this time!

Developer

Thanks for the support! We were having a laugh because you had a question for each of us

1. All the art was hand drawn by @merunicorn

2. The layered scenes were Reno's brain child and he implemented the map layout

3. I wrote all the Jester's lines for the Messenger, but we grabbed his jokes for the Knight from reddit

Glad you enjoyed!

I like the typing sound effect of the dialogue. I love the idle animation of the character and the interesting concept of a multi-layer 2D space (reminds me of little big planet). I love exploring the world I like the background art a lot, though maybe some BGM could help with the ambience. I love the whimsical cast of characters throughout the world. The world is quite big, I think a fast travel system would be nice to add as it is a bit hard to visualize all the locations and directions. Overall an incredibly adorable little adventure. Great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing our game! The typing sound effect actually came with Dialogic, which we used to handle our whole dialogue system.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a ton for playing and for the kind words! Agreed on music and fast travel - good ideas. We're glad you enjoyed it!
