I like the atmosphere you conveyed with the music,  the limited colour pallette and low resolution. The nights last a bit too long and tree chopping is a bit fidgety but I got used to it and chopped them from the bottom. I like how you implemented the aiming to shoot. Some ideas remind me of the game Don't Starve. As others have said I would have liked being able to place new campires. But overall great game! :D

Developer

Yoooo im glad you linked it to Don't Starve, it was a big inspiration actually. Tree chopping was a bit tough and it has been for most people, I didn't realize it because I hadn't properly playtested the game with other people before submitting. Thanks for the comment though, glad you enjoyed!

It took me around 5 minutes, 2 dead horses, and a dozen trees to find my house. I think it was a bit easy, I spent a lot of time walking around in the middle of the night, and my health(?) bar was still in the middle.

I liked it, you had a good idea and executed it very well, the art is nice and concise, the controls are easy to grasp, and the audio fits the theme. Congrats mate!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Congrats on finding your house, it sounds like you had a good experience, since some people also found it immediately or never... Good for you if you found it easy lol, opinions may vary XD! Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed!

Atmosphere was so good in your entry!! It was frightening being out alone lost in the woods with no house in sight, knowing I was about to freeze, spam firing my gun before my demise.

I played a couple rounds and unfortunately couldn't find my house so as others have said maybe ability to place campfires or a general path towards the house would've been helpful although may take out some of the fear and unknown so tough balance.

Art and audio were fantastic and UI was done well, I'll say that controls wise the tree chopping stumped me (please forgive me for that pun) at first because I was seemingly unable to interact with them from the side, attempting from the bottom worked great however when chopping from the side an arrow key needed to be pressed while interacting which wasn't too clear.

Great work gamer :D

Developer

Yeah I realized all the things you said about tree chopping when I got my friends to play the game, which was unfortunately after the end of submission period, so I didn't playtest enough. I'm glad you enjoy4d the atmosphere though, it really was the thing I focused the most on, and I'm very proud of it. Sorry to hear you couldn't find the house, its a little random and if I were to make a fuller version of the game I might put some kinda waypoints or other. Thanks for playing!

PS: (quite the fire pun)

I really liked the setting and style. I think the mechanics work well, but I found it impossible to find my house. In fact, I think the map is so big that even though I followed the deer tracks in one direction, I never got anywhere.

Still, it's a great work! :D

Developer

Yeah its procgen, so infinite terrain, and I get that most people couldn't find the house. It being a little random isn't fun on a gameplay perspective, and I guess I wasn't concerned about that, but it is what it is. Thanks for playing though!

I played through about 4 times. The first time I was following along with the tutorial, and I expected dialog to tell me to venture forth and find my house. Alas, I froze in the night. The next time I put some wood on the fire, followed, some deer track and found my house without even looking for it. The next two times I purposely went looking for my house and found it once. I think this could be a great start to a game that's sort of Oregon Trail-esque. Maybe with the ability to build your own fires if you don't immediately find your house.

Developer

Nice to hear your 4 different experiences, and yeah it makes sense to find the house maybe half the time or less. I'm glad you enjoyed, and yeah I think this game could be a really fun almost Dont Starve-like genre if I went through with it, but rn I have other projects. Thanks for playing!

I tried twice and wasn't able to find the house. The sprites and art are really nice. The side view of the player gave me a good chuckle with how flat it was. Kind of reminded me of Paper Mario turning sidways.

I do agree that it is a bit tough to know what to do. Some gameplay mechanic to indicate where to go or a way to keep building fires as you explore would be nice. Great work though I think you captured the feel of being lost in the woods and afraid of freezing.

Developer

XD funny remark about the character sprite, I tried making it a pixel wider but it didnt look right either. Yeah the game is not really *fun* so to say, and the gameplay is all a bit rough around the edges, I worked harder on the atmosphere than anything else. The house was always really random to find, its always in the same range away from the fire, but just a random direction, so the odds of you going that direction just come up every once and a while. Thanks for playing, and I'm glad you enjoyed the atmosphere!

Nice art and vibe, and especially the music. I didn't like killing the deer... especially since I also didn't understand what for - what do you do with them corpse? Do you get food?

And is the house randomly spawned? The first time, I immediately found it, but later I wasn't able to find any.

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked the art style! The deer killing is supposed to prompt a dialogue saying Z to eat meat.. but it seems to not do it sometimes and thats just a bug I guess, I would definitely feel sad if I couldn't put them to any use.

The house is spawned 48 tiles away from your spawn point, in a random direction.

Thanks for the comment!

Nice game! I liked the different approach with the low resolution pixel art and the changing colors after some time. I just wished after some time there would be some kind of indicator of where to go, or maybe just some sort of direction meter? I only found the house once and froze right before entering it, that was frustrating xD
But overall a great game with much freedom and many choices I could make (chopping trees, killing innocent deers)
Thanky you for making it, I had fun while playing :D

Developer

Ay thats super nice of you! Sorry to hear you froze right in front of the house that's actually really unfortunate XD I'm glad you got to kill deer also actually, as far as I know not many people got that far in the game.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Nice and fun game.

Why did you pick so low resolution? Is that an artistic decision? I love pixel art,  this feel a little too much.

But it still fun to play once you overcome that..

Good job.

Developer

Yeah it was an artistic decision, but I may have started to regret it on the long term. The game is 64x64 with a pretty strict palette, and I got used to it fast and I'm glad you overcame it too. Thanks a lot!

This was super cool. I loved the style of the game. Somehow I ended up getting lost from the fire but found the house and won haha

Developer

lool thats lucky! thanks a lot, i'm glad you liked it!

Love the resolution of the game. Keeps it reallllly spooky with the noises and the small amount of pixels you can screen at any given time. Nice submission.

Developer

Thanks!

Very nice, idk is it just me but nights are scary little bit. But the game is really fun.

Developer

Glad you found the nights scary lol, at least its fun for you!

A survival game in a gameboy style? I really like this game. The screen size makes things feel super cramped, which I think actually sells the feeling of being lost. I used my footprints a lot to find my way back to the fire while looking for the house. Super high quality here, you should be proud.

Developer(+1)

tysm man! I am quite proud of it, especially since its been a while since I finished a jam on time.

I like a lot about this game, and spent a good bit of time on it. The graphics are great, the way the darkness creeps in really feels like being trapped out at night. The stillness of the woods and the minimal audio make you feel isolated and cold out there. Visually, the game gives good feedback to a lot of things and I like the atmosphere and idea overall, and enjoyed carrying woods back to the fire.

I think a few things ultimately inhibited my overall enjoymeny and my ability to try to finish the game.

The nights are incredibly long. There is very little to do for several long minutes but to sit by the fire and wait for it to get light again. Then, during the days, I have no indication of where to look, so I can only venture out into the wilderness with no direction. This would be fine and suits the gameplay if it didn't feel so frustrating to have to sit through another long night, or if I could make a new fire somewhere else so I don't have to venture back to the same place. It's very disorienting, and I understand that that is the point, but it's hard to feel good about exploration when there are no real waymarkers to help you navigate by and it's really just a case of spending a long time waiting and repeatedly trying.

Also felt that it was quite hard to line up with trees correctly in order to get to do the chopping, but I figured out the right angle with time.

I think with a few user experience improvements this game would be incredible, the overall vibe is already really really good.

Developer

Wow! Very thourough review, thanks.

I'm really glad you loved the atmosphere, and I think that was sorta my main goal with this game in a way. I really understand all of your complaints, and I was almost kinda expecting that, since I didn't really have time to make the game fun and playable, more just a walk in the woods hoping for the best. I see how you might feel a sense of meaningless in the game, since its really either quite difficult or too easy to find your house (yes there is a house you can find). I might make some form of way-markers if I were to go on with this game in the future. Sorry for the tree interaction difficulty, I didn't realize that I made it so tough because I got used to it really fast.

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate all of what you said!
