Game Description
Beat the monster as it evolves through the 4 stages of Metamorphosis: Egg, Larva, Pupa, and Adult

How does your game tie into the theme?
You fight a Monster that goes through Metamorphosis, each phase providing a different battle tactic. Also, the dice can be upgraded! The game title is also an example of Metamorphosis...it's actually several names that constantly shift (all of them anagrams of Metamorphosis)

Hi! Wanted to stream the game today but new PC arrived earlier than expected so couldn’t.

Notes while playing: oh a wall of text for instructions, TL;DR

Good art

Ok, I put swords on sword and it attacked.

Can I not reroll dice? What is my agency as a player then? I think the game could play itself automatically round after round like a yolo casino dice autobattler. Ey, there’s a concept in that. (But probably already done tbh).

Oh ok so you need to swords to attack once.

The theme is a bit shoehorned I think.

Good sounds btw. No music though.

Hm you can interrupt the dice upgrade animation coming back in “hand”, so I accidentally upgraded twice in a row.

Hmmm all my dice are swords on the upgrade screen but it upgraded the heal anyway?

Ah so when the monster is upgraded, I need more dice to do actions if I understand correctly. The theme is less shoe-horned now.

Unusual that defense/block stays between rounds, but fits the difficulty/design of this one better that way.

Lost final battle - boss had 6hp left. I didn’t think very much about upgrading, probably should have upgraded less (I just kept upgrading until I got to ~40% failure). Haven’t really thought about it mathematically, but I think the skull downgrade is huge in impact compared to the upgrades.

Anyway solid entry, go make that Balatro-dice-autobattler I was talking about and good luck on winning the IRL casino of random indie millionaires.

Great entry! Gambling to buff my dice was a lot harder of a decision than I had expected it to be.

Developer

thanks a bunch! Yeah it seems simple on the surface, but it's really a "game of greed" hehe

I made it to the last stage before being slain!  I think I had some bad luck with my dice upgrades at the end, unfortunately.  I enjoyed the game loop once I understood what was going on.  Nice dice game :)

An amazing entry, and to think this is only your first game jam is crazy! It's a very ambitious project and one that I would definetely want to see more off! The theme was more than well addressed, and besides the little bugs (such as dragging a dice right in between the two slots to get double damage hehehe) and the font that is a bit hard to read, you have a full game with several fights and scaling enemies and an upgrade shop(with unintended consequences)! Very good job! :D

Developer(+1)

thank you very much for the kind feedback! I'll admit, I even surprised myself in this gamejam! Guess I've learned more in the past 4-5 months than I thought! :D

First jam and a complete and polished game, well done! I loved the feel of the dice rolling and all the UX was really nice. I think I would have liked to have seen a little more explanation/tutorial provided to the user their first game through (what to do, where to place things, what you were risking when you upgraded, etc...), and although the font works well for the health and numeric readouts, I found that I had to strain a bit to read any of the text written using that particular font.

Developer

All very fair critiques! I appreciate you checking the game out! I will be sure to play and rate yours as well!

I died with the final form having only 1 HP left, but I managed to continue playing and won (?) Hahahaha. Also, I found a small bug where if you place two dice next to each other, they will both be 'picked up' when clicked. Apart from that, great game, congrats! Super fun to play and with nice art and SFX.

Wow your game is so polished, I absolutely loved it ! Well done !

Developer

Thanks so much for checking it out!

I do like a dice-based game. Good ol' RNG. Cool set up here with a nice simple battle system and a great sense of style!

I do wish there was some music!

Developer

You know, music is a funny thing...I'm the type of gamer who instantly turns music waaaaay down when I play a game.  I'll have to think about it for future gamejams though!  Thanks for the feedback!

Looks are great, animations, sound, everything is super cohesive.

Developer

Thanks so much, really appreciate it!

Squirrel: Not sure it bug or intended mechanic, but sometimes I attacked more than once. The Egg is surprisingly tough or my dice rolls were just bad ;). Found some minor UI bugs where the dice got stuck to the cursor. Overall very fun experience, worth playing again :).

Radish: I love the cohesive warm color palette!

Developer

Thanks for checking it out! Yeah, it's a known bug that I just couldn't figure out how to address in time (I posted it on the game's page).  I'll figure it out eventually :D

Submitted

This was cool! I really liked that dice roll animation! Was that a drawn animation and then moving the sprite around?

Nice work!!

Submitted

Really nice game, I enjoyed it a lot! There was a major cheating bug, though - if you place a die between to spots - it gets used as if it were two dice :D Made the game 100 times easier :)

I really liked how you did the dice roll in 2D, which looked cool! I was also thinking of adding the dice roll, but was struggling with an appealing enough rolling animation without doping 3D rolls. What you did looks real good!

Developer

hey there, thanks for checking out my submission! Yup, it's a known bug...I even mention it on the game page :)  It's one of my "homework" takeaways from this gamejam...figure out how to handle multiple collisions like that!  Much appreciated!

Submitted

This is crazy for your first jam! I really loved the art and the sound you did have was spot on. I really loved the color palette you chose and those dice rolls looked awesome as well. I was surprised that there didn't seem to be any music (unless I missed something?) because that great style could have been supported well there. You should be very proud of this!

Developer

thanks so much for checking it out! Yeah, I'm really new to adding sound in Godot (this was my very first time) so I struggled enough with just choosing and implementing decent sound effects.  Maybe next time I'll dig into some background music, thanks for the feedback!

Wow. Nice job on your first jam! I felt pretty proud of myself exploiting the double damage / double defence bug. But then I gambled all my dice away into skulls and lost the will to continue.  That must be one of those hard game design problems, protecting players from their own dumb selves.

Submitted

Took me a bit but finally beat it (along with Kafka mode). My poor gacha luck carried over to the dice upgrading it seems. Very fun game! The boss sprite changing through the fight is a great touch and I found the dice rolling to be pretty engaging. I think I ran into 1 bug where I put a skull dice on the upgrade table and the game became unresponsive, but maybe it was just me. Awesome job on this one!

Developer

thanks for playing and the feedback! Yes, I didn't take into account folks would try to upgrade a die that was already all skulls XD  It's an important gamedev lesson...never assume/underestimate a player's actions! haha

Such a great first jam! it looks really cute. A bit rng heavy , could use maybe a rerolling mechanic? the dice upgrader sure punished me LOL, took a while to have a good run and beat it, loved the kafka mode sprite hahaha

Developer

Thanks! Yes, I agree about it all being a bit RNG heavy...it's one of the things I personally don't like about dice roguelike games.

The dice upgrader is meant to be a "game of greed"...do you risk messing up your decent dice with a skull? But everyone I've seen just upgrades until they can't anymore haha.  Definitely lessons learned regarding game design :D

(+1)

very cool, in the slime thing the sistem clicked to me!!

Submitted(+1)

Super well done, I love the combat system. It's also super intuitive, I could play without trouble pretty quickly

Submitted

i could not find out how you can upgrade dice , tried holding on to them on end turns and tiring to merge them together! But nice drag and drop little game biggest disappointment was that bug from Kafka mode did not have at least more armor or health (being a giant bug and all= with natural armor! :))

Developer

upgrading the dice is easy :) Just drag a die onto the table in front of the wizard like the text says :D  It will pick and upgrade a random side type (so all attacks on the die will increase by +1, for example).  But there's an increasing failure rate chance the more you upgrade your dice, which will turn *one* side of the die into a useless Skull!

changing the health/armor on the bug is a great idea for sure!  Thanks for playing the game!

I really enjoyed seeing your progress videos through the jam week. It was cool seeing this game come together and get to finally play it. Really fun use of the game name changing. At first seeing the game title I was very confused because it wasn't what I thought it would be lol. I enjoyed the graphics and overall design and layout. I got really unlucky with my upgrades early on oh well. I can't be sure but I think there was a bug with the swords drop spot. After placing 2 swords they would clear. Then I would place another sword and both spots would highlight as if one of the spots never cleared. Only seemed to happen on the swords. But it wasn't detrimental enough to take away from the fun.

Overall great job I enjoyed this one!

Developer

Hey thanks for checking out my game! The issue you ran into is known...and it's my biggest issue of the jam.  It has to do with dice colliding with more than one dice slot, so they both fire the method.  I've got to go back and do my homework to figure out how to fix that :D
