This was one of, if not the most interesting entry I played this game mechanically, it was hard to realize what was going on at first but once I learned more it was fun. Still a little frustrating to move slow and be unable to reach enemies on a lot of turns, especially when they would spawn on totally different corners of the map, but it was neat and I enjoyed strategizing!
Thank you!
Yep, I had plans for faster end movements, but it was overwhelming in terms of time constraints. Will definitely refine it in the final version :)
I loved the concept of this game! The mechanics are well thought of and it has a lot of variety; a tutorial would help a lot, but I get the scope for the jam!
Keep it up!
Thank you! I tried to explain the game mechanics in the dialogue box, but I think it was a mistake to mix it with the plot and kafka texts - people would skim and miss the mechanics :) I'll definitely go for a full-fledged tutorial when I make the full version :)
i'd love to play it!
That was a wild ride! Skimming the other comments, I totally agree with not adding teleport so close to the end. As is I think 3 level would have been pretty good, the 4th level took so long I almost gave up thinking there was a bug. I loved the final form, it was huge relief being so powerful after struggling for 15 or 16 levels.
Wow, 15 levels is a lot! Do you mean full days and nights? Or separately? I aimed at around 8 days. Did you play on normal?
I hope it was still fun! :)
Yep 15 full days and nights on normal. I kinda just skimmed the instructions initially so the first 3ish days were mostly building fire instead of distributing them more equally so that definitely slowed me down and I think I just got unlucky a few times when I built out the other elements. Re-reading my post, I must have been too wrapped up thinking about the design but yes, the first 10 days were definitely fun so I think your target of 8 was perfect (and it wasn't that it was un-fun after that, just definitely increasingly tedious, esp as I started to wonder if there was bug).
Having some more time to think, what I really like is how it's kind of a series of micro puzzles. Balancing complexity is always hard but I think this was a super cool way to address it. Generally there was clear winner for large traversal but then actually taking out enemies was only thinking a few moves ahead, instead of dozens. Another addendum, while it would have been nice to pan around, having the minimap was great, it really gave a sense of strategy.
Thanks a lot for for the extra feedback! And glad it was fun! :)
I liked the game, I had to finish it so I think I just spent the last hour on it. It is original and challenging.
I would have liked more feedback to understand at which level each tile was at. After a while I get thou. Also I would have liked to move the camera freely to plan a strategy.
My favorite thing was the mechanic for which at the beginning the move patterns were simple but you could "color" few tiles per movement. Then a larger area was possible to cover but the movement become tricky and you need to think more about your movement. Great work.
The only think I don't get is how the "attack" area during the night is determined. Some nights were far easier then other
Thank you! I'm glad the progression worked out well :)
Yep, I've planned for hints (on hover) and camera movement, but I didn't have time for that...
For the attack - your night creature is a combination of all four creatures: it "sums" the attack of two random ones and allows you to switch between the movements of the other two. I wanted to visualize this "merge" but also didn't make it in time. I also wanted to add a reroll for the resulting combo :)
Ah yes! I read that before playing but only now I understand it. Cleaver, i like it!
I know how it feels having the idea but not having time. Another thing that I would had find really usefull is the possibility to view the movement capabilities of each elements at each level would have been very useful too.
P.S. This game reminded me a lot Onitama, if you haven't play it yet you should totally give it a try
Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely work on a hint system :)
And yep, I know Onitama! :) I even know the game author :) I can't say I enjoy playing it much, but I find its mechanics idea brilliant, and it was totally an inspiration for the movement in my game :)
Very, very cool game. I liked the movement mechanics a lot, but they were also frustrating. Sometimes I would have very little movement left and right, but all the monsters would spawn on the left and right, so I just watched helplessly as they rampaged and I couldn't get over there fast enough.
But! It was fun and engaging for me to play through the whole thing in one sitting. Might be a touch long for a jam game, but super original and weird. Great job! :D
Thank you! I wanted to make two improvements for the movement but ended up not having time for that:
- To let you reroll the night creature
- To let you teleport between crystals last night
But it was too scary to make such changes in the game on Sunday - I was afraid to break something else :D
Haha, totally understandable and probably a good idea :D
The ending being what it was was pretty unexpected and funny. The gameplay is really solid and others seem to agree! There's a real sense of dread when multiple of the void things show up on different corners of the board and threaten to wreck your tiles. Tiles downgrading rather than being downright destroyed at first was a welcome kindness though!
Thank you so much!
The ending (and the other audiobook part) was from Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis" book, so I wanted to play around it a bit. I hope it wasn't way too weird :D
Fun! Interesting idea and pretty nice art style.
Thank you so much! I was first time doing my own visuals and was worried it's too bad :)
Had so much fun playing this! I am a huge tabletop nerd and this scratched all the grid board strategy itches! Would really like seeing this bein expanded on.
Thank you so much!
I'm not sure I'd expand it to something full-fledged, but I definitely plan to polish it after the jam :) But I'll think of the ways to add some replayability.
I like the game, I just wish there was a bit more of a tutorial stage, or something pointing out visually what everything does/means. I think that's what the text introduction was for at the beginning, but it made me feel more lost than anything. I also don't play a lot of tile based strategy games though so maybe that's just me.
Thank you for checking it out! :)
I keep trying to make easier games, and it looks like they are too non-obvious every time :D I planned to add more info on hover, etc, but didn't have enough time for that... I'll need to make onboarding + hints system #1 priority next time :)
I don't mean to say that its too difficult. I'm sure I could figure it out if given a bit more direction. Even just a "how to play" screen on the main menu that shows what everything means and how it works would be good.
Yep, thanks!
Looking at the Noskire's comment, are you the person who sadly deleted their game by the accident, I think I saw your message on Discord I felt so bad :(
But I'm glad you got it bad. Anyways, game is super cool, at first I was little bit confused on exactly what to do but I'm just slow lol, I did get it eventually. The game having direct theme of morphing fits the theme perfectly. Audio and graphics were cool too, but they could have more work.
But other than that game is super cool, good job to both of you!
Hey! Yep, that's me, and thanfully the admins let me put the game back pretty soon. I was really freaked out yesterday :)
Thank you so much for the kind words! I have a tendency to make games a bit confusing, and I still need to work on better onboarding :)
And this was my first attempt at drawing my own art, so I'm happy it's not completely bad :D Thank you!
Thanks for the reply! Anyways, may I ask how did you accidentally delete the game?
Oh, that's was just stupid of me :( I was just too tired and careless. I didn't think it was even possible to delete - I though since you can't upload a file, you can't delete either.
I wanted to change the thumbnail image, but instead clicked delete the game file. Don't have a rational explanation for such "misclick". Might be related to ADHD :)
Let me know when you get the game back. I wish you luck. o/
Thank you!
To be honest I'm a bit freaked out by accidentally deleting it %( I really hope they'll let me reupload it :(,
It's available again! Thanks for the waiting and the support! :) I really hope you'll enjoy it!
I decided to play before bed. I forgot it was your game and it took me over an hour to finish it! Hahahahaha!
To be honest, the only thing I missed was the option to drag the map to see the level of the tiles, but I'm being picky! The game was super intuitive, the difficulty curve was great, the evolution(?) of each tile and little elemental was neat! Being able to change the movement pattern of the combined form was a simple and great way to add another layer of strategy to the game.
Super fun to play! Congrats! :D
Wow, thank you so much!
Yep, I was thinking about adding camera drag and mouse controls, but didn't have time for that :) I will add it in the post-Jam version! :)
Interesting turn-based strategy game! Took me a minute to realize I had to press the directional keys to move (I kept erroneously hitting space to "confirm" my movement choice, but it just brought me back to the elemental choice), but once I figured it out, controls were easy. I really liked the transition into the night phase, the whole laser/energy beam thing is neat. Kinda wish my protector entity had more range, but maybe that gets better as you go further in the game? Cool game, might come back to play more of it later :)
Thank you for checking it out!
Yes, on every dawn you get your tiles upgraded, and with them - you elemental avatar. So it gets bigger and bigger, until it hits the end of the story :)
