Description
Submission for "Impressions Composing Jam: Imagination #2" by KaleOverlord Theme : The Far Reaches

Inspired by the mating call of Uguisu (Japanese Nightingale / Japanese Bush Warbler)

Every spring the Uguisu migrates from Southern China, Korea, and Taiwan to the far reaches of northern Japan in order to breed. As such, they are widely known as the herald of spring in Japan, and their mating call signals the end of winter.

This piece is meant to represent their treacherous journey across land and sea in order to reach their breeding grounds far up north.

Genre: Orchestral arrangement inspired by Thomas Bergersen

Very much gives me Epic Orchestral Sound during the protagonist's coming of age / hero moment. I immediately got exactly what you were conveying. Very nice job!

Really cool! A solid entry, interesting, evocative and easy to listen to. Definitely worth expanding on outside the confines of this jam.

I already mentioned this in a reply, but I like the flute that plays a few times in the piece! Keep it up!

i was a bit doubtful at first but that is some QUALITY orchestration. there are some minor nitpicks i have; the central piano motif could have more character (i.e. using the sustain pedal, playing more on the left hand, adding a third to the melody on the right hand) and the woodwind burst can get a bit repetitive without any variation, but overall i think you've successfully brought forward an epic, cinematic arrangement!

i need to learn more about orchestrating so i can sound this grand too. nice work man :DD

Developer

thanks for the feedback! Totally agree on the piano and woodwinds part, I didn't have enough time to really flesh them out and I was already struggling to finish everything in time. Hopefully I can manage my time better on the next project lol

Without reading your mention of the Thomas Bergersen inspiration, the intro reminded me stylistically of Gareth Coker's Ori music.

The piano felt to me that it was a bit too much "in the front" compared to the orchestra, so maybe using reverb and some volume adjustment? to place it a bit farther in the stereo space could help it blend a bit better.

The bird calls from side to side were a great touch! One idea i got while listening, was how it would sound if you used some other woodwinds/instruments to add a sort of faux echo effect to the calls. I.E having other players repeat the bird calls by lowering the volume on every repeat, sort of like they did the fake reverb on old NES games (just an idea i had, might be crap/hard to implement😅).

Since you had the woodwinds playing the bird calls at the start, i thought that the bird calls/winds would be a more prominent part in the track, but it seemed that the woodwinds got relegated to backing duty until they come back to play the calls again at the end.

I'm not sure how, but maybe the bird call could've been more used during the track somehow, say maybe using just the rhythm of it in the big crescendo part for some background stuff? I'm not quite sure, but felt a bit of a waste to me leaving it so underutilized, since the idea was fun!

Just some subjective stuff i felt while listening 😁.

As a whole the track was great, and I really love the main theme!

The whole melodic/harmonic style was what gave me the Ori vibes, so if this is the type of style you usually write, the scores to the Ori games could be good orchestration study material😉.

Stellar work!

Oh I loved Ori!  I've played both of the games actually haha

Now that you mentioned it, when I was composing the intro part, it hit me that it sounded quite similar to the intro of the first Ori. After comparing it, I think it is likely because they were both using minor pentatonic that goes up and down repeatedly while being accompanied by soft violins.

Regarding the woodwinds part, I agree that they should be implemented somewhere in the middle of the track. I've tried it but having trouble mixing them with the brass, violins, and piano without sounding too crowded. Maybe I could insert one more "build up" with the woodwinds or maybe I just need to spend more time in the mix haha. Really wish I have more time to polish this piece.

Thanks for the feedback, and glad you enjoyed the piece!

The opening is gentle, enjoyable, and well mixed.

Piano sounds a bit midi, and a lot of the elements sound a bit lacking in dynamics. The composition is really cool though, and it would benefit from some good articulation. It's often better to just play most of it on a midi controller, and have a core structure that you can easily play/improvise to as needed.

Excellent work.

Thanks for the feedback! After hearing all the other comments, I do realize I have a weakness in dynamics and mixing . Using midi controller for all instruments sounds like a good idea especially for the dynamics, will try it on a future project.

HostSubmitted

Heh, honestly going from bad to good midi dynamics is more or less a rite of passage for a digital composer. Lol.

probably my fave so far, quite creative idea

Thanks! Glad you liked it

The choirs brought such a warmth to my heart! Great song in general, I think it fits the theme well :)

I think you should spend sometime on the mix, felt that some sounds were fighting a bit for space, but nothing too much

Take care :)

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! Agree on the mixing part, this was a good practice run for me on mixing  orchestral arrangement, they were a lot harder than I expected.

Very dramatic, dynamic, and cinematic. I liked it a lot, though I felt the piano melody could've used a little support around 1:08 when the lady choir and horns come in with the counter melody.

Developer

that's actually a good idea. I was thinking about distributing the piano notes to other instruments to give it more power and clarity but ended up skipping it due to time constraints. Thanks for the feedback!

Nicely done, big build up, very cinematic I like the choir its adds a lot of depth and the "bird" flute is a really nice touch on the creative part.

Developer

Thanks! I was actually very nervous that the bird flute might come off as weird, but I'm glad you liked it!

I really like the choir part in there, I loved the idea of this grand journey that the birds take and the obvious nod to the bird in that light flute composition you have going on in there. Super cool story telling!

Developer

Thank you! I knew I had to add some vocals to give the climax more "power" but was nervous that it might overwhelm the other instruments, so I glad someone liked them. Glad you enjoyed it!

Pretty solid track, could use a little more mixing but other than that it's a really stellar piece.

Developer

agree on the mixing part. I haven't had a lot of chance to practice mixing big orchestral arrangement, and I was also rushing due to time constraint. Thanks for the feedback!

really awesome piece. definitely got the Thomas Bergersen vibes nailed down!

Developer

Thanks! He was one of the reason I got interested in making music, so hearing you said this really made my day.
