Really nice game, I like seeing other GameMakers. The one-bit art style worked well. I also liked how you rediscover the map on respawn so it's like a big memory game where you have to learn the dungeon. The first thing I did was test out what the controls were: I jumped twice, threw all my rocks, and started violently shaking. I wondered what that was until I came across a sign telling me it was used for getting stuck in walls, then another sign about a forgetful dev not implementing functionality of ladders or doors. Great humour and cool concept, Nice job!

Consistent artistic direction, from the music to the assets. Love the little humour, for instance on the sign about ladders or the fact the right part of the titlescreen is bait and you get blocked by a wall. Nice entry!

Very cool game! I also felt Downwell vibes, very nice art style and music, I love games like this with deifinied cool style. The fast jump was kinda frustraiting for me at the begining, but that is just the matter of taste:D  When i made second run i was hoping I will be able to jump to the right from the title screen for some secret, please do it in update ! :)

Developer(+1)

ooh secret area, definitely sounds like a cool idea.

I like the mechanic when you throw rocks and refill your supply from piles. Although I didn't get very far. I recorded my gameplay here, at timestamp 1:57:55

Loved the Downwell vibes, it's very cute to move the tiny knight around the maze.  I still have to do some more run cause I found the boss room but still looking for the shop! Great arcade expierience with a metroidvania map!

Submitted(+1)

I've found the Boss, but I can't find the shop.

Developer

The shop is located in the middle part of the map :3

From a sensory stand-point it's a very charming game (love the cover-art too), but it was just too hard for me.

As a rogue-like, I enjoyed the scavenging aspect, and how you had to adapt to the powers it gave you.  Maybe it's just because ladders weren't coded, but I found the shop really hard to get to, even once I had figured out where it was based on your hint.  I also can't remember if the game tells you mushrooms can revive your health, or  expects you to work it out.  Seems important to tell in any case.

The jumping and rock-throwing felt fun once you figured out how to manoeuvre around the enemies, and the wall jump works well in a narrow column, but I never got the hang of it for making simple jumps across gaps.  A little more follow-through on the rebound that doesn't negate as soon as you hit the opposite wall would help that a lot, if you're inclined to make it easier.  Maybe it's meant to be hard.

(Also, not sure if it was intentionally designed this way, but I can't do a double jump after a wall jump, even if I haven't used it yet.)

Really not a fan of the spawning insta-kills.  Set ones I can deal with, cuz it contributes to the feel and difficulty of the game.  Learning where they were on the map and trying to be wary of them next try felt kinda fun, even if dying to them annoyed the hell out of me.

But randomly spawning ones, and the ones the boss threw at you didn't frustrate me in a fun way, they just made me quit.  There was one part where I got an upgrade from the shop and a falling boulder almost hit me on the head.

I've got footage I'll post when I edit and upload it.  There's one part where I have a health upgrade but get side-tracked being flanked by two swarms of bats. XD

1st off thanks for giving our game a try and wow this is a long detailed review.

-yehp we wanted to make going to and from the shop a bit of a struggle, since the game pretty much revolves u trying to get back to it whenever u earned enough money, as for mushrooms they were originally more risky to use; hence why its not as important to take them... and we really wanted for players to figure it out themselves.

-will definitely need  to polish jumping mechanics, wasnt supposed to be as hard as it is atm.

-wall jump bug, will fix

-were not too proud of the boss, will definitely need to fix alot of issues with it

Here's my playthrough: MM21 Falling Into Ruin

Developer(+1)

oof, seeing the gameplay from another persons perspective I can now see how unfairly hard and buggy the game is... pretty funny video, luved seeing u progress  through the game and getting better overtime... the final video death was very on character.

Very consistent art style and very cool music. Wall jumping tho :D. Maybe I'm just a noob who knows :D. Well done^^

Fantastic submission! The minimalistic and arcade-like vibe was a joy to experience. I had a bit of a challenge with the wall jumping mechanic, but that's likely a skill issue :D. Well done!

Hello, I'm Velcef, the one who drew the cover. The game turned out great, congratulations!

The cover looks amazing!!

The style of the game is quite interesting, the music, effects and a little humor are cool. Not very convenient control, in my opinion, and also did not figure out how to open full-screen mode, so I did not quite manage to get enough of the game.

Submitted(+1)

Well done, the game is very fun to play, I like the visual style and the difficulty is balanced.

Fun game I loved the humor you put in it "forgot to code in the doors and ladders" 🤣 Probably the best tutorial that I have experienced in the game jam. Was really easy and clear learning the controls in how to play. Good job!

Love the instruction pop up and game story.  Great efforts!!!

This is very fun and polished! Really good job! I can see this becoming a full game and would love to see a story attached to it! It took a while to understand the wall climbing mechanic, I was using the arrows to stick to the wall like usual but I was falling all the time, later I realized that I could just jump. It was a little bit frustrating at first, maybe this needs some polishing later?

Developer

thanks for playing.
yehp, alot of polishing and bug fixing; joining the jam really late definitely forced us to rush things.

Playing this game reveals something that we have in common, we both love downwell lol. As others have said the cover art is gorgeous but yeah the actual game is pretty neat too! I think the feeling of progressing downwards is really fun and satisfying, I like the simplicity of just throwing rocks as your attack, I like the visual style, and I like the speed of the character. It's pretty challenging! I found myself starting over from the beginning many, many times. The ladders not functioning did lead to some frustration with falling into situations I didn't have time to prepare for and getting reset. Some checkpoints wouldn't hurt lol. It was weirdly addicting though, I rage quit and then came back a few times. I also found the "shake" button pretty funny. Overall cool game I like it.

Developer

ooh a  fellow downwell enjoyer :3
yeh at this point  the ladders were more of a troll really...

'note to self: add a  checkpoint'

funny story  about the 'shake' button...
Teammates: Hey Matt, u wanna improve  the jumping and wall collisions so that the player doesn't get stuck?
Me: Nah, but look the character can 'shake' now :D

Super cool! The style is awesome! (And while not what we're rating, the game page and cover art are super nice too!) I like the feel of just being a little guy throwing rocks, haha. What a fun idea for a weapon. In general, the game is also just the best thing a game can be: fun!

I could use some more feedback for when my rocks hit enemies. Not sure if something was going wrong here though, because in the gifs it looks like enemies poof into a little cloud of smoke, and that wasn't happening for me.

Anyway, this is one that I'll probably be coming back to when I'm not trying to go through and give folks ratings. Great work!

Developer(+1)

thanks for  trying out our game, and yehp the 'poof' effect  from the gifs were supposed to  be placeholders, but we kinda forgot to replace  them and out of time. also it kept crashing and lagging our web build of the game, so we decided to just turn it off entirely.

Submitted(+1)

Ah, that makes sense. Well, if it made a web build playable for the jam, I'm gonna say it was a good call!

Submitted(+2)

Really cool style and fun music, found wall jumping in tight spaces to be a bit frustrating but otherwise it feels like the start of something really good!

Submitted(+2)

LOVE the artstyle its so simple but the simplicity is very nice. love the retro style as well.
