Nice entry! I'm sad but at some point in the late game, my attacks would stop dealing damage :( Maybe I'll try again later.
Combat feels alright, pacing is good. I just feel like bosses could have a bit more telegraphed attacks. Having voicelines in a jam game is unusual and they're pretty good! Nice job overall ^^
Cool game, the art and music was great. Combat felt good too, slow enough to have weight but fast paced enough to be hectic. The story was nice too, bigger than I expected and voice actors too! Really nice job
The setup and intro of the game really makes it feel massive! Also good use of combining different art assets. Here's a recording when I tried it at timestamp 10:03
Its great you used voice acting, unusual thing in game jams! I must say the combat feels really nice, i like the speed of jump, attack, dash all feels well for me, attacking enemies also can be felt by player which makes game really enjoyable. Also main character animations looks and feels great! One thing i think could be considered in future updates are to use more unified graphic style, because when you leave the first tutorial like level, the assets beging to differ to much for me ;) Overall really good entry, congratz!
Let me just say, if your intention was to create a game that made you feel trapped in an abusive romantic relationship, A-GODDAMN-STAR!!! Cuz man this game had bugs. Bugs up the butt.
And yet... I just couldn't quit it. Maybe it's the great visual assets you used. Maybe it's the fact you made the main villain such a creep that needed teaching a lesson. Maybe it's just that hitting things and bouncing off their heads was fun. I persisted.
Now, the specifics! Lemme see...
- If I died I lost my double jump, and usually my trident too. If I reloaded my save at the starting statue... same thing. Meaning every time I wanted to fight Eros, it took 4-5 minutes to regrind all my powers.
- Ares is fun to fight, but he can just be wailed on. Aphrodite too, but you at least moves around a bit more. Eros and the Nightmare were the best. Even if the Nightmare could get you outside of the arena with their skulls.
- Sometimes Aphrodite's raining lances spawn even after she's gone.
- Eros can fire his lazer from a sport even after he's moved.
- Sometimes I would land on a platform, and the enemy couldn't hit me, or I couldn't hit them, or both. I think dashing fixed it?
- The pit in the castle doesn't respawn you like the others. Looks like you go off-map and the game kills you. I suffered quite a few frustrating ends to that...
- Speaking of which, the dash could recharge a bit faster, or at least have a tell for when it does.
- As you're probably aware, the voice acting is good, but the levelling/balancing is bad.
- Like I said, Eros comes across well as a scumbag, but maybe the VO was a bit too slow. He really relished every syllable. On one had it tested my patience. On the other, I guess it did make me hate him more.
- There's a golden platform on the Nightmare path that can only be accessed by bouncing off an enemies' head. It doesn't do anything... why?
- The save-point guy's dialogue scrawls too slow.
I have footage that I need to edit quite a bit I'll let you know when I upload it. May it bring you as much joy and pain as your game brought me!
Hahaha I loved reading your feedback. Thanks a lot for taking the time to write all these things. I absolutely agree with every single aspect that you have said. The game indeed has a lot of bugs. Sorry for the inconvenience :)
- The saving system works the best with downloaded version but yeah it does mess up from time to time. Once the Jam is ended (as we can't edit the submission at the moment) we will have that sorted out :)
- Lol Nightmare was a "nightmare" for us developers too. It just did random stuff (even though coding wise she has the least amount of programming)
- The bug with Aphrodite's lances is actually fixed at the moment, but again I'll have to wait till the jam is over.
- About not being able to hit. That's a bug we are aware and working on. Does it get fixed when you dash? Well I didn't know :D
- The pit in the castle is Vanvick's responsibility :D. Nah, just kidding. We'll get back to it.
- About dash recharging, well, we would add some indication about abilities but we simply didn't have time :(
- The voice over is amazing I agree. The people who did it are mega amazing. I'm positively shocked myself. Balancing-wise, thank you for bringing it. Hopefully we'll get to it :)
- Golden platform must be me not cleaning the tiles good enough^^. Thank you for pointing out. Apologies^^
Again, I appreciate the fact that you took all your time to point out all these things. It's like a list of bugs that we need to have to sort out. You are great. About your relationship with the game. It's a love story. Sometimes it's rough, sometimes it's tender :D
The voice acting feels like such a unique thing in this jam, it's really well done as well!
I'm also a sucker for Greek mythology so great job to the writer for doing it justice!
Great teamwork and great jam submission overall.
Very cool to see the voice acting! Great use of art assets combined together, with only some minor inconsistencies.
The combat felt quite good. The long invulnerability duration after hitting the enemies was awkward at first, but could be adapted to. Nice job on the AI for the enemies and the first boss, felt like I was fighting actual enemies instead of just mindless zombies! Being able to jump on enemies was cool.
I scrolled through the comments and didn't see any mention of this, maybe it only happened to me somehow through some bug? After beating Aphrodite and getting the double jump, I used the statue to return, and then got up to Nightmare. However, after the first death to Nightmare, I lost my double jump ability. I got back up to Nightmare one more time without the double jump out of stubbornness, but after that I had to move on. I'll be watching for updates to the game after the jam so I can give it another try!
Hey mate, thanks a lot for the thorough feedback. We tried our best to balance the combat but we actually didn't have enough time. We had bugs at the last 20-30 mins before we actually released it. Had to get up in the middle of the night to double check everything :D. The nightmare and the bugs are actually somewhat consistent and we are looking into it. The name is not just nightmare for the players but for us as well haha. After the jam is ended, I believe it will have been resolved. Again, thanks a lot for the feedback^^
The gameplay itself is very good, the music matches the theme very well. This game, so far the ones I've played, is the only one that has voices dubbing the story, that's really cool. I don't think I've played even half the game, I'm not sure, but I'll definitely come back. Great job!
Thank you for enjoying the Muisic, you can check out the full OST I wrote here - https://soundcloud.com/theturtlebox/sets/psychepath-ost
I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the boss fights and the combat system overall. This seems like it may be an extension of a udemy course? Never the less, looks and feels great good job! I really enjoyed how I can jump on the enemies to hurt them, made getting past those archers a breeze :D
Thank you for playing. Some of the codes (player movement, game manager) is actually from the other project in my channel. That one is also a metroidvania. However, all the enemies and bosses and level design are made from scratch. Archers are inspired by the ones from Dead Cells but I think my archers are 2X more annoying 😁. Glad you enjoyed the game 😊
ngl i really enjoyed the voice acting... though the different artstyles for the assets are very jarring to see put together
Good golly, voice acting (in a game jam entry!) always blows me away. Great work there.
Some of the art was super cool, especially the backgrounds and the player character. I also loved all the little things that would move around in the backgrounds, great details. But sometimes it seemed to lack some cohesion. For example, Hephaestus seemed weirdly huge and had an outline...?
The story and world really draws you in because you've done a good job building it. I don't know that the big exposition dump from Hephaestus is totally necessary, but it's not terrible. The writing is pretty good!
Overall, this is shockingly fleshed out. Could just use some polish and refining. Excellent entry!
Thank you very much for the kind words. About Hepha, I went around, looked for some sprites (All the assets are free assets), and couldn't find anything. Then I just tried some random AI pixel art for it and initially it was actually just a placeholder. But as you can see we never had time to work on it. So there you go Hepha :D. Again, Thank you for playing it and I'm glad you liked it. About the Voice Actors, we are all positively shocked ourselves too :D
Voice acting was really nice. Art direction was pretty strong but inconsistent style/pixel size through me off, and the nightmare boss was a little confusing. Overall a very solid and polished metroidvania.
Woah voice acting! Overall the art was very good, but a bit inconsistent. Very cool boss fights too!
Nice game the controls felt really nice to play with. I thought the spear ability was a really unique and cool one. I was however able to scale invisible walls and jump out of bounds with it but honestly that was part of the reason I liked that ability so much 🤣
Incredible work on visuals and music. Love the vibe of this game because eveything matching well. Was pleasure to play!
