Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Liraveth is a top-down tower-defense rogue-like where you play as a tiny sprout trying to survive against extinction. Protect yourself against waves of bugs who wish to devour you! Use your vine as a weapon to flick away these pests or draw the marking shapes under them to send out air slashing attacks. Collect experience and continue growing as more and more nearby bugs become aware of your existence.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
The theme "you are the weapon" makes us think of literal weapons for harm but we tried to think more outside the box. Weapons can also be used for good in the right hands or for protection from getting hurt or worse. Plants are stationary and usually are thought of to be on the short end of the stick against pests such as caterpillars who devour their leaves. However, tomato plants for example actually have defense mechanisms where they can emit chemicals to summon parasitic wasps to get rid of caterpillars. With this in mind, we created a game where the player is a plant that is actively trying to survive against waves of bugs while utilizing its entire being as a weapon of self-preservation.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
This is our first game :D

This is very beautiful! The plant looks amazing, the bugs look cute, the gameplay reminds me of the golden age of mobile games too, which is a big plus for me. Seems to me you've spent quite some time making this game a reality, good job!

For some criticism I think the lack of sound really pulls down the game quite a lot. I see the sound slider there so I guess it's just a matter of lack of dev time. Also, the drawing mechanic somethings doesn't start for some reason. If it's some hidden mechanic I think it should be better conveyed to the player in-game.

Anyway, I think you did a very nice job! Well done!

Developer

Thank you so much!!!
We did our best to get the visual style and gameplay nailed down and I'm so so glad you have enjoyed it this much

I 100% agree with the lack of sound design hurting the game. Sound is SO so important for games and we are planning on implementing sound as soon as possible! thank you for enjoying Liraveth, for the lovely words and the criticism. Means a lot to us!

Cute game! I really liked the drawing mechanics as well as the visuals of the vine!

Developer

Thanks! Our lead dev worked super super hard to get the vine and drawing mechanic juuust right, we shall improve on it too so it can be as smooth as possible!

Clever idea and great visual polish. No audio for me, not sure why, I didn't even touch the volume slider.

Good work, fells like a perfect game for a touch screen.

Developer

The audio issue is on our end. Sadly, we had to do some cuts that lead to audio not being implemented, but we will add sound to Liraveth as soon as we can!  We're glad you love the idea and the visuals of the game.

We also thought touch screen would be a great idea. Maybe a mobile version would be smart

Great game :) I am sure the stem was hard to make. I do think the game scales a tiny bit fast and seems to overwhelm. Otherwise it was a lot of fun.

are you moving with speed in the name of the fire?

Developer

GOTTA GO FAST!!1!
Jokes aside, you're totally right! The game scales faster than anticipated and if you're not ready it gets real hard real fast. We are already working on fixing the pacing of the levels!

This game is absolutely precious! I love the plant inspiration with their defense mechanism. I also really enjoy this type of game, since I always play chrome's Halloween one when it comes around. The added leveling and abilities you can do builds upon this idea really nicely too!

I saw on Artysaur's twitter you'd like feedback, so here are a couple notes:

  • The boss bugs are super tricky when they come from the top, since you can't see their attack sequence
  • A tutorial explaining the water droplets would be a big help (I didn't notice them the first couple play throughs)
  • (This one is only on Google for me, I just checked Bing and it runs great there!) The responsiveness of the swipes was a bit frustrating at times as I would draw the mark, only to realize it wasn't registering

(these may all be things you all are aware of, but I wanted to take note just incase it might help)

Overall I had a lot of fun! I'm glad to hear you all will be continuing to work on Liraveth. I see a bright future for this game,  gardening all sorts of plants and highlighting their unique defense mechanisms! I'll definitely follow along  as you all develop it further! :)
Developer

Thanks for the kind words ;w;
The in-depth feedback means so much to us! specially since we're already working on continuing this project. You're absolutely right on everything you pointed out and they will be a lot of what we address on the next update once we get things running again!!

Nicely done! I imagine it wasn’t easy to get that plant movement working, let alone the drawing aspect of the game! I’m currently on a laptop, so I didn’t get that far, but I’ve seen enough to say that this is a solid submission!

What could be improved is the tutorial, I only started to understand what I had to do when I actually saw the enemies. You could have 1 unmoving enemy in the tutorial that you have to beat for example.

Anyway, congrats on submitting!

Developer

The tutorial idea for the enemies is so nice! We had plans on reworking the tutorial to get into most mechanics the player should know before playing and this is a great one that we will definitely take into consideration o7

I love the way the vine bends while following the mouse. This is a really fun concept with great art that has great potential to be expanded on.   It would be nice if there was a visual indicator for how many symbols an enemy has left.

Developer

We're so proud of the vine movement and I'm really glad its one of the things that stands out from the game!
I also think the visual indicator for how many symbols an enemy has left is a great way to tackle this problem~

Wow, what an innovative game idea. I absolutely love it! The graphics are really cool and I love how the plant’s tendril moves around. Because this game involves a lot of quick precise hand movement I actually kind of got a little bit of a hand cramp while playing, and I think I would much prefer to play with a stylus and touchpad, or on mobile. Anyways great job folks!!

Developer(+2)

woah thank you so so much!! 💚💚
i'm sorry about ur hand :c
i totally felt it too while i was testing a lot LOL
moving forward we totally gonna rethink stuff, also i personally haven't tried to play it with a stylus but i totally have to try it!

Developer(+2)

It makes me so happy hearing you think we're being innovative and that you like the art ;w;
Thank you for pointing out the hand cramping thing. I am fully behind the idea of accessibility and ease of use! Recommending a joystick is a great idea~

Developer(+1)

thank you soo soo much!! that makes me unbelievable happy to hear 💙😭

thank you for taking some time to give us such wonderful feedback! we'll definitely look into better accessibility and game balance to make it less straining for our gamers!

Really nice game concept. It is fun drawing and try to be as quick as possible, but sadly the upgrades do not work right now, so you get overrun pretty quickly. Otherwise great idea and is fun to play❤

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

thank you so much💚💚!! im sorry for the lack of upgrades, almost made it in time :c
we are hoping to update the game in future!
