I'm absolutely here for cat-based combat! Everything animates nicely and the sprites complement each other well. Having a little bit of narrative to establish the interactions between the cats creates a nice introduction to the game and gives it a bit of purpose. The dash attack is neat - I handily disposed of the pesky ghosts!

Thanks for submitting Max Attacks: A Spooky Cat-venture 2 to the jam!

And thank you for hosting this year's Scream Jam! It was just as awesome as last year's Scream Jam if not better!

Very cute and fun game. I loved the sounds the ghosts made. Some ideas: I think it would make for a more engaging gameplay loop if there was some kind of ultimate attack that I’m charging up every time I defeat a ghost. If you did do that you’d probably want to spawn even more ghosts to compensate. Also, maybe consider adding a vertical dash attack, or some kind of explosive ‘ground-pound’ attack. There’s lots of fun stuff you could add. Anyway, great job on this!

Those are wonderful suggestions! I was thinking about adding one of those in my game, but due to time constraints, I had Max use only one attack to take out the ghosts. I was also thinking about adding a zombie enemy, but once again, I didn't have enough time to do so.

Adorable little game. Definitely not much for spooks, but it's not really going for that. I like the deployment of dialogue cutscenes between the different cats and their color-coordination. I like that each cat has different personalities that come through in the dialogue. The gameplay is challenging enough to have replay value, and my only major criticism is that the double jump is barely relevant and that I found myself often overjumping my targets. I think a convenient solution here is to halve the distance of the first jump, and make the second jump about 75% of its current force. This would make it more important to double jump to get up onto platforms, and also make it significantly easier to hit ghosts that are just barely above you. Otherwise, this is a charming little game with a cute story and intuitive gameplay.

Thanks for the feedback! I didn't have enough time to implement a Mario-like jump physics into my game (where the character immediately falls after they let go of the jump key), so I went with the default game engine platforming physics. I'm glad that you liked the cutscenes and the characters. I had a lot of fun writing the story for this game.

Charming music, cute art style and good story. I love that everything that happens in this game is explained and notifed (like new enemies in dialogs or the whole “How to Play” section) and the gameplay itself seems intuitive, I figured out what I needed to do almost instantly!

Developer

I'm glad to hear that!

This game is great with its interesting story, charming art style, and simple, easy-to-understand gameplay.

I really appreciate you had a cutscene for dying as well, shows your attention to detail. The game loop is fun and engaging, I somehow got minus point while clearing out waves though, that was a bit weird. Congrats on your game!

Developer

Thanks for playing my game! You lose points if you get hit by the ghosts or let some of the ghosts escape to the left side of the screen. I think after the jam is over, I'll reduce the penalty since players have said that losing 100 points per ghost escaped was too harsh for them.

This game was great. The controls worked really well! And all the cues and hints (power ups, cutscene hints, etc) were expertly executed. I thought I would have been confused by not reading the "How to Play" but everything was so intuitive I caught on just fine.

Between you and me I'm adding this to my collection to play again ;)

Developer

Oh wow! Thanks so much for putting my game into your collection!

I guess the game was influenced by the Eastern culture. There were relationships of the main character, music (?), and quests for killing hundreds of monsters. On the first level my score got negative, I don't know if it was intentional or not. I wish there was a mechanics to do a small jump. It will be impressive to see cats' story revealed not in the "how to play" section, but somehow between or during the levels. There could be a boss dog, who becomes your friend after you defeat them.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing my game! Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out how to do a Mario-style jump during the jam. So I had to use the default game engine physics to make my game.

You lose points if you let any of the ghosts escape or if the ghosts hit you. Perhaps I should nerf the score penalty in the future since losing 100 points was too harsh according to some of the players.

The characters section on the "How to Play" screen is a quick summary of the characters in this game and "A Spooky Cat-venture"--the game I made for last year's Scream Jam. I put it there so that you don't get confused by the story I put in the game.

Nice game. Nice visuals and a fun bit of story interwoven between the waves. Gameplay is fun, too. It would be nice if it allowed for variable jump height (jumping so long as the jump button is held, then start falling as soon as the button is released, allowing for small jumps with a tap, and big jumps with press and hold), since that would allow you to better line up with the ghosts when doing the dash attack. All in all nice game, though.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out how to implement a Mario-style jump properly while I was making the game during the jam. So I went with the default game engine physics.

Jumping and dashing feels great with the responsive air controls. At first I thought the ability to control jump height with how long you press space would be great so that I can jump just a little, but that can already be somewhat achieved by dashing right after jumping. The soundtracks are also nice. I wish there was an endless score attack mode because that was actually quite fun.

Developer

Thanks for the comment! I would've loved to incorporate an endless score attack mode, but at the same time, I wanted to incorporate the story into my game. So I went with the "three waves" approach, kind of like the Salmon Run mode in Splatoon 2 & 3, except the enemy count would increase after every wave.

This is one of my favorites, honestly. I know it must have been hard getting all those physics right for platforming.

Developer

Thanks for the comment! I had to do a lot of testing to balance out the player's speed, jump height, and dash length so that the player doesn't get too frustrated with Max's movements.

Oh, to be a cat, dashing through the graveyard banishing ghost while all my other cat friends cheer me on. Lovely.
No but for real, this game feels amazing to control, its so smooth and works create, the game loop is also super fun because it's just generally fun to jump around and combo all the ghosts. But it still has that bit of challenge if you happen to get too greedy or fail to keep up with the pace of the ghosts. Good fun, also loved the cutscenes although I feel I have some context missing this being the 2nd game and all, so seems I gotta check the first one out too lol
Great work!

so, this is what cats do when they are not around lol I absolutely loved the game, sprites are very cute, mechanics are easy to pickup yet there still is a learning curve, which keeps the game engaging! among the best I've played so far in the jam, good work!

Developer

Thanks for the comment! Cats are the best!

Loved the game. So polished. Nice graphics. The gameplay is smooth and fun and it gets more tricky the more you progress. Nice touches: the power ups and the enemies of different colours. Also cut scenes to tell the story in between the waves. It is very well done and it feels very professional. Well done.

I hope to see Max again! ;)

Well done on making a complete game. Especially, you added a "How to Play" section which includes details about everything the player needs to know.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the comment! I tried to be as thorough as possible with that section so that players don't get confused about what to do or who the characters are.
