I think the character creation tool is a genius idea and it was fun to see my monstrosities in action! The graphics are also top-notch *clap*

I know it's a game jam game and there's not enough time to polish everything, but if you decide to develop it further, some floating damage text and sound effects for the attacks could enhance the experience! A sound effect and text to tell whose turn it is could also be nice! :)

For me, the music felt a bit too intense for the game's feel, but of course, that comes down to taste.

Overall, great job;  you got a lot done in a week!

Huge props to the artist(s?) behind this game! The aesthetics are fantastic! I'm a fan of the turn based gameplay and I think it's a really cool idea to Frankenstein together a team of monsters and how that affects their stats, movement and attack options. Really impressed with this game and I love how it captured that spooky cute vibe (a personal favorite aesthetic)

I was a little confused by parts of the UI, which I read in a different comment was one of the last things added, so I understand it's not going to be perfect :) but here's where I got caught up in case you plan on updating things after the jam:
so after I placed all the parts, I wasn't sure if the create button would solidify my creation or create a random monster. And then once it was created and the monster icon was above the create button, I didn't know if I should leave it there or drag it to the bottom. I also wasn't aware I needed 3 monsters until going to the next screen and had to go back, so perhaps prevent the player from leaving the monster creation screen until they have the minimum and ideally make it more clear, such as making the first 3 monster boxes a different color etc.

As for actual gameplay, I think the addition of VFX for hitting enemies would go a long way. I wasn't sure if missing attacks was a thing, so I kept checking enemy health to see if I hit and actually dealt damage. I think what speed does could be clarified a bit, I assume it's initiative but it could be accuracy?

All in all pretty fun experience and I hope your team continues working on this because I see a lot of potential :)

I was a bit surprised once I launched the game, didn't expect this. Real fun and the aesthetics are incredible.

A small thing: Somehow on the borders of the screen, the grain effect is like a little bit more intense depending on the color is behind. It cause me a little of motion sickness sometimes. No big deal but just a small info since the art is top notch!

Really enjoyed it - a super novel submission and great aesthetics!! (And sound/music!)

Really cool I didn't expect to see a turn based battler on the ScreamJam. I love it, the aesthetics were topnotch and the multiple parts gave so much replayability

Really cool, unsettling atmosphere! The mechanics are interesting, though it takes a while to understand them. The instructions were hard to read because of the blur and dark edges.

Cool game. I think it would have been fine without the fuzzy visuals and have them clear, but really sets the mood. Very creative making the monsters. Great job!

The graphics are impressive. White noise and low contrast create a novel effect, but with more time in game they simply obstruct the vision and become excessive. Vignetting obscures important parts of the interface, especially at the bottom of the screen during the battle. I liked how you can create your own monster from different body parts, there could be a button to create a monster from what is available automatically (?). Gave the highest scores.

Thanks for your reply! About the effects: when we were doing it, we only tested it on the Windows version and it looked pretty enough for tired us at the night... When we saw it at the end, and in the browser version, it really looked a little bit annoying after a while.

About the UI, we really did a bad job and didn't explain the gameplay clearly, because it was done in the last hours of the game jam, so...ha-ha...

We will try our best on future projects with this aspect of games and will take your opinion into consideration, thanks! :>

(and also, thanks for the idea about an auto-making button, we really didn't think of it)

My colleague explained it all in general and I agree with her. Thanks for the review!

AMAZING art and music. Takes a while to figure out what's happening but it's quite fun once you do. The monster creator is really unique and fun, I love the dynamic sprites.

Thanks so much for the review! ^^

Amazing game! Cool art and atmosphere. The music during the battle is simply amazing. Gameplay cool mechanics for assembling the desired monster. The first two battles are difficult, but then you understand how everything works and it becomes easy. I would like more difficult battles, for example, choosing who to fight (for easy battles there is less reward). The game lacks a little UI improvement. At first, I did not understand that the monster only hits once.

Here are my top three besties:

I agree with you! The game has a lot of room for development, but in 7 days, unfortunately, we managed to do only this. I also agree about the user interface, it was worth making it more intuitive, but there was little time :(

And so thank you very much for the review! Your monsters are simply wonderful! LEGENDS :DDD

Awesome art (what made me click on this game)! When it started up I was worried it was going to be too overwhelming but actually very intuitive and it's a really cool idea and fun to play. On my first playthrough I only made one monster and stalemated myself but, when I played again it was fun to pick teams with dynamic movement patterns to cover all your options. Like a customizable, spooky game of chess. Awesome!

Maybe it's not so helpful since this is my second playthrough when I only made one monster but I recorded myself playing your game if you want some user play footage! Audio balance is bad and it's unedited, but for what it's worth!

Developer(+2)

WOW, thanks for that deep dive into our game! I'm glad to hear that you didn't give up and figured out the game's rules. When work on this game was almost complete, we also found similarities with chess :рр

Thank you very much for the feedback from me too! And special thanks for the video, it's really nice to see from the outside how people play the games you worked on :D

I really loved the premise of the game!! Took me a minute to figure out how to move and attack but I got there!! I love the creature designs and the art style in general!! Really impressive you made this in a week :3

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review! Yes, the game is unfortunately not very intuitive at first, we will take this into account in the future. Glad you finally got to play it and liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Nice game and I got the hang of moving/attacking the second time around!

Developer

Congratulations! In fact, we probably have a game that is not very clear at first glance... But thanks for the feedback! :D

I loved the creature creator part a lot! Great atmosphere too!

Developer

Thank you! ^^

The idea is really interesting, I enjoyed creating monsters and fighting. Also the art is cool, you certainly found a very interesting style.

I've encountered a crash, I guess, when you create a monster and place it to the slot, you can somehow end with an empty frame around cursor, and then if you click on the monster creation slot the crash happens. But it's a strange case and it's easy to avoid.

Overall, its a cool game, really fun to play. Nice work!

Developer

Thanks a lot for the feedback and the bug info! Our programmer will take it into account!

I love the creature customization, the art and whole vibe/style of the game is amazing too! I also really enjoyed the sound effects/music😁

Developer(+1)

Thank you, that's nice to hear!

Being able to mix creature parts is incredibly fun, and I can already imagine an advanced version in which the player can unlock new monster parts. Having a limited number of parts is a very good thing. Having a negative value in damage can heal, which may not be planned, but in any case, it could be a feature! I’m not talking about the overall style of the game, but it’s both very beautiful and rather unique. The post-processing effect is perhaps a little too accentuated, which sometimes makes it hard for me to read the screen around the edges. The sound is very, very good too, as it’s very creepy. So creepy that I ended up turning my sound down a bit during the fight, as I was transforming into IRL creatures! Haha

Congratulations to the whole team, it’s really a great job!

Developer(+1)

The negative damage value is how our programmer represents the heal... haha... eh :)

Thank you very much for the feedback!
