It was cute. I do miss a bit more content, more information and a menu, but great overall. I appreciate how part of the game is just pissing other people off. Great stuff, good work!

Game Description
You play as a duck that can do the best for the public interest by putting out fires or spitting on people that get in the way.
How does your game tie into the theme?
You can let your inner light shine by being a good citizen and putting out fires by spitting on them, or you can let your inner darkness show by spitting on people.

Cool little game! I like how either path is valid, lets the player have a choice even in a fundamentally simple game.
Nice entry. It was unclear exactly what the goal was initially, and once I got a score of 21 nothing really to do. Would have been nice to have more explanation, sounds, final screen. Or to make it endless allow fires to spawn continuously?
I was a white duck, then I was a black duck.
Overall, cute little game. As others have mentioned, SFX would elevate this. Also game over / final score messaging.
Nice work on your first submission!
Awesome work on your first submission. I wish there could have been some audio. Curious what the little green guys sound like :D. Took a little bit to understand what was happening exactly and once I got to a score of 21 and removed all the fire there wasn't anything else to do. Maybe a game over screen would be good?
As far as explanation, I had a lot I could have done. Even down in the description, I could have explained that you can spit on the guys, the max score, explained there was no end screen (oops).
The guys spawn more often with a higher score, and don’t spawn below a score of -10.
The fires spawn more often with a lower score, and don’t spawn above a score of 10.
This could’ve used balancing as it’s easy to get above 20, but very difficult to get below -15.
Oh, and the green guys probably make shuffling sounds and say “oh, hi there!” when they spawn and when passing one another “excuse me, sir”.
And when they’re mad they just grumble about “kids these days” - and maybe sometimes “ducks these days” - and some other inarticulate sounds.
Fun short game! Loved the good/bad take on the theme. Good work on your first jam!
Fun quick game. Went back and played a second time after looking at the screenshots. Will be interested to see if this game has more progress in future.
Pros
- Simple, effective movements
- You get to choose your path
Critique
- While you can choose your path I am interested to see if that leads maybe abelites or something
- Audio... something, anything? Even a quack when spitting? The lack of audio left the game feeling more empty than it should.
This game is a great base to build from, and I look forward to any updates to it
Thanks for pointing out what I spent my time on! I wanted to get to powerups, but I spent all my time learning the basics, like collisions (spit puts out fire, but doesn’t collide with the duck) and movement. I have a hard time moving on from something that doesn’t feel right yet, which isn’t always a good thing in a jam.
As far the audio, especially from playing the other games, it’s super obvious that was an easy miss for me. It was my first game in godot, so I’m still not sure how to do audio, but I would guess it’s pretty easy. I guess I wanted to only learn so much, and I wanted to polish off the gameplay before I added another feature like audio.
I made it to 20/-11. I love how you have to be careful spitting on people since the splash can put out a nearby fire and the sprite changes. Great first jam!
I super wanted to put power ups in the game, including one that would spray/shotgun the spit. Then it would be much harder to only hit the one or the other.
If I had that, then having some levels would be pretty cool: I could make some areas nearly impossible to only spit out the fires, or on the guys.
This was cute! I got to +15 then started letting my ducks evil out and got to -15.
As Octahedral noted, this is really short, but what's here is very cute (I like the art style, and the way you drew your duck is honestly adorable), and I like the spitting mechanic (as unusual as it is lol). I would love to see more and more varied gameplay, especially some kind of control over spit power based on how long you hold the mouse button.
Congrats on the submission, I hope to see more from you in future jams!
EDIT: Oh, and I managed 22 as a high score. Not sure if there's a theoretical cap, the fires didn't respawn for me.
The chance of fires lower as your score gets higher, and vice versa with the guys walking around. The same if you go negative, you’ll see more fires and fewer people. The fires won’t spawn over a score of 10, so I think it would be 9 plus the number of fires (15), so it should be 24. You got pretty close!
And thanks very much! I had ideas to make the world endless in each direction and changing backgrounds based on how good/evil you were. I also planned to increase the power of the shot based on click time like you suggested, but it wasn’t more important than getting the guys spawning correctly. :D Then getting some power ups would be cool - increased blast radius to cover a lot of fires, but a higher chance of hitting the guys. I expect the next game I work on will be quite a bit more polished (maybe) since I’ll have at least one of these games under my belt and I have some friends that would want to work on it with me.
