Description
A little girl wakes up to find a ghost beckoning her into the ocean, where she is able to breathe. She follows the spectre deep into the ocean, where she finds settlements full of different underwater species, helps to solve their problems and make the underwater world a better place.

By the end of the game we learn that the ghost is the girl's father, who drowned in a boating accident when she was very young. Some strange force allows him, from beyond the grave, to take his daughter on an adventure she will never forget.

The game would be a turn-based RPG.

SONG LIST

Follow the Ghost - Plays when the girl wakes up to see the ghost, and follows it into the ocean.

Coral Town - A town theme, taking inspiration from Nobuo Uematsu's excellent town themes from the Final Fantasy series.

Cephalopod Shuffle - A battle theme, for when you are fighting cephalopod-type enemies (octopi, squids etc.).

The Village Atop a Whale - Another town theme, for a village built on top of a giant whale. Yes, those are whale noises, not a recording of someone on the toilet :).

Dolphin Taxi Service - The fast travel system in this game is a taxi service run by dolphins! The chord progression in this song makes it a bit disorientating, perfect for a speedy dolphin ride.

Nephropus, King of the Lobsters - Theme of the king of the lobsters, a militant faction in the underwater world.

Sunken Mausoleum - The final challenge of the game is a huge dungeon-like mausoleum. At the end we find the father's body in a grand casket.

Farewell, Father - This is the ending theme of the game. It plays as we discover the truth about the ghost. It also acts as the theme of the father. Elements of this song appear in some of the other songs on the soundtrack.

Message from the artist
This is my first jam, and it was really fun! Having a deadline and knowing that other people might listen my songs was really motivating, hopefully you like them!

Theme

Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
My game is based underwater and its story is heavily influenced by the image (little girl goes on adventure guided by ghost).

Wow this is a fantastic soundtrack! Everything is either really catchy or extremely atmospheric!

Follow the Ghost : pretty creepy, but perfect for the context in the story! Love the use of strings and sfx here - very cinematic!

Coral Town : Lovely town theme! Beautiful melody, and sounds really homey...

Cephalopod Shuffle : AMAZING blues track! Came straight out of nowhere, and went instantly into my playlist! I love how lively and silly it is :D

The Village Atop a Whale : Super atmospheric. The whale sounds are an "obvious" but great touch.

Dolphin Taxi Service : This and the last track make want this game to be real so bad, 'cause you have some great ideas here that I'd love to see become real! Another silly banger!

Nephropus, King of the Lobsters : I like how regal and "classical" this sounds, it really sells the vibe. Also marching snare is always a 10/10

Sunken Mausoleum : Another incredible ambient and atmospheric track. Once again, I really want this game to come to life.

Farewell, Father : A beautiful solo piano track, which I always fall in love with. Great uses of Line Clichés, and I definitely can "feel" parts of it in the ost!

This is one of the strongest submissions I've seen so far! Amazing job! Fantastic ost!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much, glad you liked it enough to put it on your playlist!

Sold almost immediately with the intro to Follow the Ghost. Wonderfully ambient, gentle piano melodies and a plethora of warm, dense ambience woven beneath. No rush to resolve, floating along and evolving as it goes. Some pseudo-TLOU kind of textures in this one, which I dig a lot.

Coral Town feels a little more typical as an arrangement, and that works well after the textural goodness that preceded it. This gives me some J/RPG vibes for sure, particularly some soft Zelda ones. Great job on the orchestration with this - the mix never grows too busy but always has a lot of interesting things going on at once. The inclusion of the piano to carry lead tones later on in the track is genius.

Cephalopod Shuffle is yet another great change of pace. Some percussion to immediately set the rhythm, and then some gorgeous guitar to get everything moving. This is a groovy one for sure. Good job on the bass in this; the walking lines falling into line to emphasize the rhythm is really well done.

The Village Atop the Whale is not only a stunning visual, you've nailed the kind of core sound I'd associate with that. Fantastic choice of voicings in this, and kudos on the articulative piano playing. The woodwinds on the latter half do a great job of gently carrying the listener through the various whale songs in the background. You killed it with this one, honestly - may be my favorite of the bunch.

Dolphin Taxi Service immediately reminds me of something you'd hear on a Dreamcast or Gamecube. Bouncy bass line, solid 4/4 rhythm and a sax to full send it. This is delicious. The various arpeggios in the background really work well here; blurred just enough to not be distracting but the more you listen the more you're rewarded.

Nephropus, The King of Lobsters has that tell-tale regality to it; not just in the melodies and rhythms, but the choice of instrumentation. Trading off the harpsichord to the piano to carry the chord progression with some mallets to handle the lead tones was really clever here and it adds a nice richness to the track as a whole.

Sunken Mausoleum is gorgeous and is likely second in line for my favorite. Your arrangements thus far have been really good and nicely fleshed out, but I love your take on the more ambient pieces. So easy to get lost in them. Great choice of voicings here once again.

Finally, Farewell, Father is a wonderful outro. Cannot beat having a piano take the reigns and guide you through an experience. Great playing here once again and I love the minimal accompaniment that comes with this one. The modulations in tempo as it plays out is really well done, too. A perfect ending to such a wonderfully varied soundtrack.

Great job, this was a blast to listen to and covers so many different styles and genres - kudos not only for arranging it so well, but mixing and producing it too. Super solid execution on the theme. This is up there for me in the top spots, for sure. Best of luck!

Wow! Thank you so much for such a detailed comment, I'm currently grinning from ear to ear! I really appreciate this :D

Follow the Ghost: Amazing textures. Nice touch of Dorian.

Coral Town: Early game town vibes. Definitely feel the Uematsu influence.

Cephalopod Blues: Definitely wasn't expecting 12 bar blues! Pleasant surprise. This track in particular being the battle theme reminds me of Mother 3 or Earthbound.

The Village Atop a Whale: I love this for a water themed town. Definitely whale noises lol.

Dolphin Taxi Service: Groovy! Definitely has that SNES game airship/fast travel theme feel, particularly in that bassline. Brilliant!

Nephropus, King of the Lobsters: Pretty cool character theme. Feels royal!

Sunken Mausoleum: Alright the chords and choir are brilliant. Excellent!

Farewell, Father: Sentimental outro to the OST with some great piano work.

Great work!

Developer

You are spot on with those influences, I am a huge fan of the Mother soundtracks and yes I was going for a more SNES-like style for Dolphin Taxi Service. Thank you so much for the feedback!

Surprising variety of genras along the tracks, you switched between different dynamics and it works. Good job!

Thank you :D

A beautiful and sentimental soundtrack that literally immerses you in the game. In "Follow the ghost" I felt like I was sinking deeper and deeper into the water. The correlation of each song with what you describe about your idea of the game is so well executed.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I really tried to make each song fit as closely to the ideas I had about the game as I could, good to hear that it seems to have worked :)

Cephalopod Shuffle and Sunken Mausoleum are my favorites ones. They're absolutely amazing!!

I was wondering what LABS instrument you used

I'd love to see this made into a game♥

WONDERFUL WORK!!

SAXOPHONE!!!! I can absolutely see the game here from the track descriptions. Super good submission and so much done in a week, absolutely insane!

8 track OST where everything sounds amazing and thematic. Yes! Sunken Mausoleum is a big favorite of mine, I loved the work you did with all the bells it's beautiful! Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the saxophone, the samples sound unreasonably good for the random soundfont I found it in so I had to include it somewhere.

this was fantastic. it deserves so many more ratings! i especially loved sunken mausoleum, it's just fire. it sounds strangely like something you'd hear in naissancee. brilliant!

Developer

I hadn't heard of NaissanceE before now, from the trailer the music sounds good so thank you!

Great variety of colors in this ! I especially like the slower more ambient tracks, specifically  the opener and Sunken Mausoleum I could just straight up listen to on a daily. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the ambient songs, I haven't had as much experience making them so it's good to hear they sounded OK :)

Submitted(+1)

Wow crazy to hear you had no experience in them. They sounded the best to me

Submitted

Really loving the aesthetic! The descriptions fit each song really well too, I can almost see the game already!
Though every song sounds... muffled? If its an aesthetic choice then it really makes it feel more retro, nice!
Especially enjoyed the surf-rock vibe of Cephalopod Shuffle.

Thank you :D

Wow! truly formidable choice of instruments and mix between synth and orchestra. I also like the retro mix of the tracks, a little muffled typical of 2D adventure video games. I think the intro is one of my favourites, nostalgic, minimal with a very good choice of sound design  Cephalopod Shuffle it has a rhythm that I don't know why reminded me of jetpack joyride (very high level composition). that synth sound similar to the sounds of a whale in The Village Atop a whale is still very original and beautiful. nice work and nice submission.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! The whale sound is actually a real whale sample (albeit pitched down a bit and heavily filtered). I never really thought about my mixing as retro-style, although I guess it makes sense since I listen to mainly older game soundtracks so I would have picked up their sound.

Thanks again for the feedback :D

That's such a great submission. This is the kind of soundtracks that can make one both laugh and cry - it actually almost had both those effects on me. It really shows how much effort you put into creating a whole world, i mean damn, it literally made me think "I wish I put more time into my world concept". You can even grasp each time a real bit of story just by the title and the first few notes. Amazing.

My personal favorites : The Village Atop A Whale and Dolphin Taxi Service, the ones reponsible for the most of my emotions. The latter reminded me of the track that plays in Pokemon Emerald when you take the old man's boat, nostalgia hit hard.

Great!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it - it's a great feeling knowing my music had such an impact on someone.

I'll be honest, I haven't heard the Pokemon Emerald soundtrack before, I'll have to give it a listen!

Submitted

You're welcome! The Pokemon track seems to be called "Set Sail!", I think it's pretty similar in the mood haha

Submitted

This is a great submission! You really leaned into the picture prompt and succeeded in illustrating it musically! Especially liked the way you use wind instruments and the piano. Superb job!

Developer

Thank you! I had the image open on my other screen while composing, glad to hear it worked.

Wow, one of the best submitions I've heard so far!

I really love how diversified the album sounds, from "royal"/RPGesque songs (like thew lobster king one, or the village atop a whale) to more fun and dynamic tracks like the cephalopod shuffle one.

Even if I'm more of a movimented OST guy I still really liked the calmer tracks, like the sunken mausoleum (wich at the start reminded me a lot of undertale's "core" track).

Ah ending song it's really hearthwarming!

Really liked the entry :D

Developer

Thank you so much! I am a big fan of the Undertale soundtrack, the comparison to it means a lot!

Submitted

I really enjoyed cephalopod shuffle! It really stood out not only amongst your other tracks but among a lot of the other entries!

Developer

Wow! Thank you, glad you enjoyed it :)

Submitted

This is all absolutely top notch! Really lovely laying of instruments and orchestration, and the melodies are distinct and lovely. Extremely evocative of the classic JRPG era - I definitely would love to play this game and see what dialogue & scenes are tied in to each of these songs, especially the very emotional ones! I'm also impressed with how many musical styles you are able to play with here, and fully successfully each time!

The only track that doesn't work for me is Cephalopod Shuffle - not because I don't love the track (it's a banger!) but because it's just TOO CHARMING for a battle theme! xD

Awesome work all around!

Developer

Thank you so much!

I was struggling to find a tone that I was happy with for the battle theme - I didn't want to go too dark or dramatic to fit with the image, but I agree, I might have gone too far in the other direction.

Again, thanks for taking the time to leave some feedback :D
