Description
This ost uses a lot of more cinematic/orchestral elements.
Some of the tracks are more inspired by Jazz, Funk, Electronic music and more...

I used Garageband (and loops from it's royalty free library) for writing and producing, on top of Musecore 3 (for writing) and some real-life recordings of instruments.

This game would be a sidescrolling, pixel-art platformer, similar to Celeste.

This submission's story is about a girl who gets sucked into a digital world inside the internet (l think like maplestory, but I've never played it). At the beginning she's really happy and excited about this new world, but throughout the game she realizes how much she misses home, and searches for the person who sucked her into this world.

I tried to incorporate 3 main leitmotifs into this ost : The world motif, which is used to represent the environments in which this game would take place,
The character motif, which is used to represent this game's nameless protagonist, and her drive to adventure and to succeed.
And lastly the main game motif, which is also in a way the nostalgia motif. It's used to represent the main plot points of the story.

Titled : This would serve as the game's title screen. It's also the first appearance of the world motif, which is the chord progression this track is based on - I I7 II v. This motif is based on the Lydian Dominant scale, which appears in the harmonic series. I thought it's connection to nature would be a fun way to evoke this world, even if it's not a natural place.

Just a girl : This is the track that introduces the main character and her main motif. Her motif is in Lydian, and (imo) in a cute way, switches to a bar of 5/4 for the second bar of her 'melody loop'.
This track's clarinet was recorded by a close friend of mine, but due to time management issues, got recorded in a pretty bad quality. Either way I'm very grateful for her contribution to this project of mine :)
Finally, at the end of the track, there's a sneak peak at the game's main motif.

Computering... : This is the first "level track". It would be sort of a tutorial, and it would show the character going into the game through the internet. This track uses a pretty obvious Chromatic Mediant, which is a writing technique I personally love. There's a tiny appearance of the character motif. This track's melody is very much inspired from Celeste, and the overall production is inspired by some of Nintendo's menu themes.

Don't go phishing! : This is track is supposed to be for the level which is "represented" in the picture theme for the jam. The ending part is a use of the world motif. (I'd like to add that I played this track for my mom, who's got no experience with video games, and asked her what type of environment this would be for, and she immediately said "a water area", so I'm pretty proud of that haha).

If I got a wish... : This track fully introduces the main theme. The game's main motif is in B Phrygian, and is usually played on this very melancholic synth. Our protagonist finally realizes that although she's having a lot of fun in this new world, she really misses home, and she wants to find her way back. Also, this track introduces - Me! The first track I recorded Trumpet for. I've been wanting to use trumpet in these jams for a long time now, so I'm happy to finally be able to. I didn't have a proper way to record and mix the recordings, so their not of the greatest quality, but I tried. This track is very much inspired by Celeste's OST again.

The Funkwork Network : This is a pretty funky track (If I do say so myself) and is used to represent the game's big-city level. By this point the protagonist is looking for the person who trapped her in this world. This track is heavily inspired by Stevie Wonder and songs like I Wish and Sir Duke. It features me playing trumpet again, and an improvised solo towards the end.

Ur g0nNa L05e tH1s : By the end of the game, our protagonist is able to figure out who trapped her in the game - a vicious hacker trying to flex his skills. As a "final" show of power, the hacker takes over the entire game and starts to destroy the game's world. The track features a ton of callbacks to previous tracks, to represent the world getting corrupted. Towards the end of the track, the rapper reached the Title screen of the game. He starts to mash different parts of the game's world together, and all seems lost. The trumpet fanfare at the end of the track (played by me :)) is representing the main character's drive to win.
This track is in 9/4 (4/4+5/4 or sometimes the other way around), and is highly chromatic (with a minor sound), while still having the tonic of Bb.
This track's structure (and part in the story) is heavily inspired by Undertale's Omega Flowey boss fight.

At the end of the game, the main character is able to defeat the hacker and get back to the real world, closing our adventure.

Message from the artist
I hope like this! These jams really help me creatively and mentally, on top of being straight up really fun, so I'm always excited when another one comes around.
Also, sorry I wrote so much, I had a lot to say haha.

Super diverse OST! Love the quaint, orchestral tracks and the atmospheric electronic stuff and the funk track! It all came together very well and always gotta love live recordings when they happen, especially with wind instruments. Very expertly composed too, def can tell there is a strong background in music theory with the odd time signatures and chord progressions. Awesome job!

Developer

Thank you so much! I do indulge in theory a lot (maybe a bit too much haha), and I'm glad it's noticeable in my music too!

Love the atmosphere here; a good amount of variety while keeping a pretty consistent and cohesive sound throughout. I can definitely hear the Celeste influence, hehe. Your trumpet doesn't sound bad at all! I thought the trumpet was going to be a one and done thing for "If I Got A Wish..." oh but how foolish I was. I quickly realized that this whole jam was actually just an excuse for you to live out your DEPRAVED trumpet playing fantasies.

You thought you were being clever by waiting until halfway through the OST to introduce the fabled yellow copper, but I see right through your ruse. Being a talented music theorist and composer just wasn't enough for you, was it? No, after finishing the entire OST for this week-long jam with six days remaining, you longed for more fulfilling ways to express yourself. Searching for other outlets, you quickly succumbed to the brazen boldness of brass, and now you seek to infect countless others with your budding funkiness. I envy that about you, and I'm super happy that you are obviously living your best life.

Nice OST btw

Oh my god, this has got to be the funniest comment I've gotten about anything I ever made (how could you see through my ultimate master plan?????)!

Thank you so, so much for your many compliments! Right now I'm going to work on becoming the exact person you described in this comment.

Oh... It's time for the soundtrack, which I've been wanting to listen to for a long time. And I finally got to him!

Titled - A good introduction with a sense of WATER

Just A Girl - Hooray! Time for something cute! ((Wow, is this a real clarinet? Cool!)

Computing... - HELP ME, THEY WANT TO PROGRAM ME

Don't Go Phishing! - So, first of all: It really sounds like an underwater world. Secondly: I'm proud of you now too).
 If I Got A Wish... - beautiful longing :_)

The Funkwork Network   - TIME FOR JAZZ (and funk too, huh)

Ur g0nNa L05e tH1s - Good... I feel a little uncomfortable)

Overall, I liked the idea and the variety of genres and styles! Cool!

P.S. You have a great cover art, huh)

Developer

Thank you for all of your compliments! I'm really happy to hear you wanted to listen to this ost so much!

And the cover art is something I'm pretty proud of. I don't draw too much anymore, and I especially don't do pixelart almost at all, so when I did this little drawing and it came out pretty cute I was really happy with myself :)

Thank you so much!!

It has a surreal feeling, almost like a dream core, which fills one with curiosity.

Developer

That's really interesting, thanks!

Titled: I really like the chord progression! The Lydian Dominant feel isn't as strong as it could be to me however, as the II-v also kind of feels like a V-i. But I definitely still feel it. A melody would have helped reinforce the Lydian Dominant feel, but I understand that its meant to be an ambient track.

Just a girl: Cute track! Love the Lydian feel.

Computering...: Your progressions are so cool. I too enjoy chromatic mediants!

Don't go phishing!: Love the ii-V-I and then the chromatic movement back down to the minor tonic.

If I got a wish...: Trumpet! Again I like the progression.

The Funkwork Network: Funky! Great bassline.

Ur g0nNa L05e tH1s: Crazy crazy time signature and rhythm! I like the story attached to the track.

Great work!

Developer (3 edits)

Thank you so much!

With Titled, I had a really hard time setting up the Lydian Dominant feel, and I almost changed it up completely because of that, but I asked some of my musician friends what sounded like the tonic, and they said C (which would make it Lydian Dominant), so I decided it was good enough for me 😅

I'm really happy you enjoy these progressions! Harmony is something I spend a lot of time thinking about (maybe a bit too much), so this jam was a great opportunity for me to put my ideas into action!

My story for this entire jam was really improvised (and kinda rushed) but also really fun to think about, and I'm glad it's captivating enough :D

Thank you very much for your feedback!

Actually a really fun track to listen to. I had no idea what tonality is Titled and I still don't, special chord progression.  Nice production all around, lots of different style and it all fits together which is pretty hard to  accomplish, Well done !

Developer

Yeah, the chords in Titled are C - C7 - D - Gm, and quite frankly I also have a hard time finding the tonal center (it's supposed to be C, but it's really ambiguous).

Thank you for the feedback!

This has got a great 2000s feel to it in my opinion, it's computerised of course but it's got such a charm to it, and loads of different influences as well. Awesome live playing by the way! Love this, excellent work!

Developer(+1)

I never put it to words, but I do think 2000's is the best way to describe the way I wanted this to feel!

Thank you so much!

Great submission, I love the live instrument playing, it really makes this soundtrack stand out! There's lots of great composition in there too, I like the weird time signatures you use throughout. The genre variety is also impressive! My favourite track is probably Just A Girl, despite the quality issues of the clarinet lead I really love the melody it is playing and the accompaniment sounds great!

Fantastic work!

Developer(+1)

I'm really happy to hear Just a Girl works, despite me being in such a rush while making it haha

Thank you very much!

Lovely soundtrack, lot of variety and very well mixed! Really love Dont go phishing!

Nice job!

I really enjoyed going along the whole OST.

Nice vibes in Computering. My personal fave!!

Cool use of harmony, so much color in it.

AMAZING JOB!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! Harmony is a part of music-making that I spend a lot of time thinking about, because it always felt so mysterious to me.

Reading your description and I got to the word Maplestory and I laughed out loud. My older siblings and cousins used to play that a ton and I tried playing it a few years ago but it wasn't fun. It sort of represents childlike whimsy to me since I was fascinated by it as a child but as an adult I was disappointed.

As you said there was some quality issues with the clarinet but I also think the kick in ...Computering was super overpowering.

OH WAIT, I read the youtube description and it said to listen to the soundcloud one instead and the kick issue was nonexistent so NVM.

your trumpet playing really fit in well with the mix so great job on that!

I really liked the cool time signature on the last track but I think it felt a little empty. I think having a section with most of the main instruments all playing together for a really full sound would be amazing on that track specifically!

Developer

First of all, thank you very much for the feedback! It means a lot :D

I'm really happy to hear that the trumpet playing fit in with the ost, I was really not sure if it would.

I totally agree with your feedback on the last track - I realized a short time into the jam that it felt empty.

Thanks again!!!

Submitted(+1)

Intriguing first track! really love the gentle switch to organ and piano at the end!

2nd track got lovely theme but the first transition was a bit abrupt and the flute wasnt fitting really well in the mix.

3rd track was a nice combination of style!

4th was cool in that waves feeling!

5th got really weird and goofy vibe x) remind me poor things ost ! the second part at 1 min was soul crushing with that gentle trumpet or flugelhorn? Sounded really great ;)

6th track was like an elevator song and it work really well in that genre ! loved the trumpet inclusion! but did u recorded her a multiple time?

7th track got a really cool time signature, thats really cool to take that risk !

Overall great OST, maybe you should work a bit the mix^^

GOod job ;)

Developer

The 2nd (and last) tracks were incredibly rushed, and I definitely agree that the transitions are a little awkward in the track (same with the clarinet, because of how little time I had, it got recorded in a reaaally bad quality haha)

I'm really surprised and intrigued in what you had yo say about the 5th (which has trumpet on it, and I'm flattered to hear it sounds like a flugel because I love that instrument) and 6th track (which did in fact have me playing trumpet on it, and each part was recorded twice, except for the solo towards the end), because the vibes you got from it were not what I thought about originally, but they make a lot of sense, and I'm really glad you enjoyed them!

I've been really trying to improve on my mixing, but I do now it's far from perfect, so I will definitely work on it!

Thank you for all the kind words, and for your feedback! I really really appreciate it!

Great and varied ideas!

Developer

Thanks!

I wish I could understand all your commentary but I'm still a tiny bit too green to grasp some specifics.

Now for the OST, I'm utterly impressed by both the quality of the writing and even the mixing / mastering (a subject I think you could tell given my submission xD)

Amazing job getting so many unique and interesting tracks while still binding them through different leitmotifs. It was super interesting reading your take and why you did the things you did.

Awesome all in all!

Developer(+1)

I'm really happy to see people are actually interested in my creative process, so this comment really warms my heart. I never thought people would be so interested in what I have to say haha

Thank you very much for all the compliments! One of the things I've been really trying to improve on for the last year or so, is mixing and producing music, even with my (relatively) limited tools, and I'm really happy to see that it's noticeable!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

OH yeah it definitely shows, amazing job!

And yeah you definitely gave me stuff to study so thanks for sharing the details!!

Submitted(+1)

i love the music commentary you put out for each song in the soundtrack, I'd always like yo hear someones thought process and the different ways you approach with the music theory. Like the fact you use 9/4 for the time signature for your final song, its pretty great. Also like the sudden jazz song for funkwork network, it really helps out.

Finally, shoutout to Don't go phishing for the title name alone, its a good wordplay you got going there

Developer

Thank you! I love talking about theory, and how I use it personally, so these jams are a great opportunity for me to yap about it.

And the names are one of the smallest details that I always thought was so underrated - you get games like Undertale that puts a whole comedy show just with the names of the tracks, and no one really talks about it. I'm really happy you found it funny too :)

Thank you very much for the kind words!

Submitted(+1)

Those are some really cool tracks! It's definetly noticeable that you put a lot of thought and effort into the tracks. I found it really helpful to have the editor's notes on each track, since I am currently trying to get better in music theory myself qand this really taught me something new, since I 've never heard of the chromatic mediant before. The more you know!

It's also great, that you and your friend recorded a few partrs for the Tracks. In my opinion it makes the tracks sound more real or personal in a way (espescially cause you can hear the breathing from the trumpet), it lcreates a nice contrast in the "digital world".

My favourite peace would probably be "If I got a wish", because it introduces the trumpet and has a very nice synergy with the celeste like synth, it is split into 3 seperate fragments, which all ecvoke slightly different emotions.

So overall very nice OST, keep it up! :D

Developer

Thank you so much! It's honestly a huge compliment to be able to introduce theory ideas to other people, and I'm very honored haha!

Submitted(+1)

Great write-up! Really enjoyed the choice of instrumentation throughout here and the exchanging of motifs. A fair amount of different styles explored throughout, too, which is really cool.

I think my favorite of the bunch is probably Computering... - there's just something about that first half in particular that reels me in. It's so chill and 'distant', for lack of a better term. Reminds me of something from the early 00s era of consoles and games. Having the second half become a little busier and revisit elements from the previous tracks was great, and then having it strip down to the essentials for the final quarter or so was a great touch.

Shout out to The Funkwork Network as a close second - really nice departure from the other tracks stylistically. Great choice of synth voicings here and letting the bass determine the pace and drive while having other instruments dub and trade off some cool counter melodies. The lead brass-esque synth toward the mid-point and subsequent orchestration brings me straight back to the era of MIDI engines driving the soundtracks from the late 90s (such as Theme Hospital, etc).

Fantastic work as a whole here. Executed on the theme perfectly and there is a lot to enjoy no matter one's preferred genre or style.

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! I'm really happy to see that you liked all the small details I put in the tracks!

And the brass synth is actually me, playing trumpet! The way it was recorded does make it sound super MIDI, and I've actually come to realizing that it's very fitting with the track's style.

Anyway, many thanks for the feedback! It's really appreciated :)

Submitted(+1)

Some pretty well made tracks with a creative take on the theme, I like it! I especially like your use of motifs which really help to make the songs feel more connected and part of the same game. I like your implementation of live playing such as your trumpet and your friend's clarinet, I think it adds a somewhat human vibe to the tracks and it's a well appreciated addition! I also appreciate you adding your thought process when creating the songs in the description, it's pretty interesting to see someone else's thought process when creating tracks.

Overall some very nice and well made tracks! As I've said I enjoyed your use of motifs and creativity when creating the OST (especially the last song, I like your use of a somewhat uncommon time signature!). You did a great job making these tracks feel part of the same game and I applaud you for that!

If you have some time I'd also appreciate if you could check out my submission as well (only if you want to, tho!).

That's all I have to say really, have a splendid day!

Developer

Thank you very much!

And I'd love to check out your submission, as soon as I can!

Submitted(+1)

I really like your descriptions of how you use music theory! Really interesting to see a composer's thought process. And as a trombone player appreciate the use of brass :} I sometimes get stuck in chord progressions and maybe a good way to break out is to focus more on making a melody and shifting harmonies around that? But overall really good job!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you! I really enjoy writing these descriptions, ever since I was told that I should write some at my first jam!

I was really afraid the Trumpet wouldn't fit in with the music, so I'm really glad to hear people like it :D

And I definitely agree about getting stuck in chord progressions. I've always had a really pop-y ear, and it leaks into how I compose too. I definitely should start writing melodies first sometimes, since a lot of my favorite music I made came from writing melody first!

Thanks for the advice! I really hope you enjoyed the music :))
