Description
The soundtrack is composed for a narrative puzzle game. I used Ableton as my DAW of choice. The game combines a mixture of orchestral, folk and electronic music to convey a vibrant but dystopian world.

Before Your Eyes
As the player boots up the game, they are met with an opening cinematic recounting the death of Ashe. Jarring flashes her of memories are shown, split seconds apart from one and other before cutting to a view of the towering mountain and wind-swept plains.

Spirit Warden
The main menu track. The camera is fixed on the same shot of the mountain. A constant breeze is gracefully swaying the grass and trees in the area.

Distant Memories
The player is introduced to the main characters in the story: Ashe, Ayra and Yuma. Ashe has just awoken reborn as a ghostly spirit. She struggles to remember anything from her past life. Ayra is a resourceful young girl set on a mission to spread her parent’s ashes on the summit of the distant mountain. Yuma is Ayra’s pet dog. Ayra and Yuma collect firewood, mournful over the passing of her sister, Ashe. Ayra can’t see that Ashe is with her in spirit-form.

This section acts as the gameplay tutorial. The player (controlling Ashe) is introduced to basic movement in spirit-form and must complete a couple of basic puzzles, helping Ayra source the wood for the fire.

A Long Road Ahead
Ayra and Yuma begin their journey towards the mountain. Ashe guides them through a dense forest, helping them navigate difficult terrain by possessing and manipulating items in the environment.

Ancient City
To progress, Ayra and Yuma must navigate through a large rundown city, a shell of world once teeming with life. Cars and many other modern pieces of technology are scattered throughout the city streets, long forgotten and reclaimed by nature. Ayra was told stories by her parents of the dangers of these cities. Raiders often fight amongst themselves over what little resources are left over from the old world.

In this section of the game, Ashe must use their abilities to stealthily guide Ayra and Yuma through the city. Raiders patrolling the city can be distracted and knocked out using objects in the environment to help give Ayra and Yuma safe passage. As they approach the final stretch before escaping unscathed, they are caught in an ambush. Ashe must act fast, chaining together her abilities to disarm the raiders before they fire.

Loyal Companion
As Ayra narrowly escapes the raiders she notices Yuma slowly limping and inevitably collapses. Yuma, hit by a stray bullet from the raiders passes away in Ayra’s arms. From Ashe’s perspective, Yuma’s soul leaves her body as a spiritual being like herself. The remainder of the raiders approach and surround Ayra. Before they have the chance to fire, Yuma’s spirit quickly dashes and disarms each of the raiders, sending them running in shock and horror. Ashe can now communicate with Yuma’s spirit and unlocks a new ability to use throughout the remainder of the game.

Alone in This World
Ayra, now completely alone in the world, is even more determined to complete her journey. ‘Alone in This World’ is a short montage of Ayra’s travels before arriving at the base of the mountain.

Base Camp
Ayra, now at the final leg of her journey, must endure the extreme conditions of the towering mountain above. Ashe helps manipulate the terrain to provide Ayra footholds to ascend.

The Summit
After a gruelling climb, Ayra finally makes it to the summit of the mountain. Her journey is almost complete. She takes out a pouch filled with the ashes of her deceased parents and scatters them into the vast open air, overlooking the immense journey she overcame. As she scatters the ashes, Yuma and Ashe feel themselves being pulled into the ether. In this brief moment, their spirits are conjured into reality where Ayra finally sees the loved ones who were by her side throughout her journey. They share a brief, emotional embrace before Ashe and Yuma fade away. Their journey is complete.

Message from the artist
Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to my soundtrack. Video games have been such an important and influential part of my life and it means so much to begin sharing my music.

Theme

Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
When first looking at the prompt artwork I was immediately drawn to the human-like figure looking down on the girl. I interpreted it as a spirit guiding the child through the space. This was my leading inspiration when developing the story and soundtrack for Spirit Warden.

Wow! So good! Very nice contrasting, variative compositions! And it is 9 of them. Very impressive! Makes me rethink how I should write my music.

What a submission. I'm not too familiar with Electronic music but this production and orchestration are incredible. The motifs you set up at the beginning sound great and it's very rewarding hearing them throughout the entire soundtrack. Really great stuff!

Before Your Eyes: (blink) Cool EDM! Nice guitar.
Spirit Warden: More sweet guitar. Nice vox.
Distant Memories: The arps and synth choice are so satisfying.
A Long Road Ahead: Love the rhythm. Love that part between about 1:40 and 1:55.
Ancient City: Dat synth! Classic EDM feel. A vibe.
Loyal Companion: Cool triplets. Love the constant buildup and then the sudden guitar tho!
Alone In This World: Great guitar again.
Base Camp: This goes hard! Addictive rhythm and my favorite track for sure.
The Summit: Returning the vocals to close out the ost. Sweet track!

Great work!

I think that there's a lot of good stuff in here, good work! There's a lot of variety throughout here, but I don't think that the tracks sound super cohesive, like they could all be from different projects. However, the production is very well done and the composition on these tracks is very professional!

Very cool work of music. Smoothly going between styles ain´t easy like that. I wonder if the sudden explosions of intensity - like the dubstep break in one song, for example, would be a bit of a moodbreaker in a puzzle game. Otoh, this can probably help to jolt awake the listener every so often.

Thanks for the kind words Goatthrone!

I should’ve included it in the description but I imagined the intense section in ‘Ancient City’ to be programmed dynamically on a trigger if you made a mistake as a player and Ayra was spotted by a raider! Really appreciate the feedback!

Thanks so much!

Very original as a game Soundtrack, I have to say. I like your style! Love the blend of the folk side with your synths. You talk about a dystopia but so much of your tracks are so joyful, that's probably what you're going for but it surprised me! Maybe that's hope.

I had huge Your Name callbacks in Distant Memories with this piano arpeggio haha

Overall, you have great changes in tone, and mood! I have to say, the vibe kinda reminds me of Road 96's OST and that's a compliment.

Great!

Thanks so much for the feedback Ménure!

I imagined the soundtrack through Ayra’s eyes as a child still filled with hope in an otherwise unforgiving world. Towards the end as she loses Yuma the instrumentation becomes darker as that hope starts to die but reignites when she reaches the summit of the mountain and completes her journey!

Really appreciate the feedback - been meaning to play Road 96, it’s currently on my backlog hahaha!

Despite shifting genres multiple times, all the songs maintained a good amount of cohesion, which is super impressive. Add that the quality maintained over 9 tracks in this time period. Hats off. Really well produced and composed. Also you forgot to add rock to your genre list!

Thanks so much for the feedback Aesaire!

Glad you enjoyed the shifts in genres throughout! I was hoping it wouldn’t be too overly jarring as long as I kept most of the motifs consistent!

revisting this for loyal companion, that ending is so gosh darn crisp

So many different sounds and styles and they all sound amazing. All of the tracks are different and unique while still sounding cohesive as a whole soundtrack. My favourite is probably "Base Camp." The mix of guitar and drums sounded great in that one.

Thanks so much for the feedback Dedon!

Glad you enjoyed it, had a lot of fun writing Base Camp!

This soundtrack left a great impression! Every song was unique but felt connected with each other. But those guitars stole the show for me! The various types of guitars you used really gave this soundtrack extra layers of depth! Great job!

Thanks so much Marchen!

Had a lot of fun writing for guitar, glad you liked it!

THIS WAS SO GOOD! you had that homey feel, but it went into electronic in some parts, and it felt so smooth! this was honestly incredible! great work!

Developer

Thanks for the kind words PencilEraser!

So glad I was able to capture that feeling in you - was one of the main goals with the soundtrack! That means a lot - thank you!

This is such an awesome soundtrack!! You show off so many different styles and you've managed to find some REALLY cool sounds for some of your instruments! That vocal in the beginning of Spirit Warden is SO good. I also really just love what you've done with the layering of instruments, and you have an EXTREMELY good ear for melody - these hooks are all catchy as heck! Thank you so much for sharing, it's a gem of a submission!

Thanks so much for the kind words Konbanmiao!

I really appreciate all the supportive feedback, glad you enjoyed the soundtrack! Means a lot ❤️

Wow, that was amazing! A lot of moments really captured that calm, serene, and inspiring feel perfectly. I also loved the abrupt genre shifts in a couple of the tracks and they were a really cool change of pace, worked very well! Really awesome!

Thanks so much MrMe!

Glad you enjoyed some of the big shifts in genre, was a big hesitant but glad it worked out!

Very impressive soundtrack, I liked it a lot !
The tracks are very well produced and the instrumentation works quite nicely, could it be on the acoustic guitar parts of A Long Road Ahead, the electronic parts of Ancient City or the electric guitar parts of Base Camp (my favourite track in the soundtrack).
The story description on your project's page is also well elaborated and quite fitting for the tracks you have provided, so great job on that too.
Congrats for your work !

Quality is top notch in this, I'm not really a fan of Electronic music but did a good job on mixing your orchestral/folk with EDM that it seems flawless.  Amazing build up as a whole, really well done !

Thanks so much FoxHyode!

Means a lot to have such positive feedback even if you’re not too into the genre! Really appreciate the feedback!

All of these compositions are amazing work with instruments, sound and my mood) The use of different genres gives the piece originality and variety! It definitely has a vibe of something sensual and hyper-emotional.

When guitar appears in the tracks..... love it!

My favorite is Base Camp because... awesome! Already added it to my playlist

I'm not a fan of the puzzle genre.... But it's a game I would play)

Amazing compisition, instrumentation and sound choices. It definitely reminds me of VGM-like electronic music in the early 2010s. A really nice contrast between the acoustic and electronic sections. If I could offer some advice, I think a few of the electronic sections e.g. in the first and fifth track, whilst great, might not work as well in a video game as well as they would as a standalone song, especially with the drop's chords having that "strobing" effect; it is important for soundtracks to let the medium they are accompanying breathe, too much intensity doesn't make it slot in as well. A lot of great work here, especially considering the short time period. I look forward to hearing more.

It's impressive how much you did with a week. Really coherent and beautifull work !

Really well put together, stays coherent despite using a varied sound palette and taking inspiration from a lot of different genres and the mixing is very on point.

Could definitely hear this in a game, very impressed you managed to put this all together in a week!
