  • Love it! Coffee mixing is a really fun idea, though I wish it was a littttle bit slower with more options <3

Dark Roast is a coffee shop simulator set in the shadow realm. The primary mechanics involve taking orders, making them (some through short mini-games) and delivering them to customers before they leave upset. It uses traditional WASD/Arrow Keys to move and E/Space/Enter to interact. With adding so many alternate controls, I hope to make the game more accessible to anybody and everybody! Hope you enjoy :)

Great game! Love the ambient sounds that add to the atmosphere. Really cool adding the drink coffee speed boost mechanic as well.

This game seems kinda familiar but I can't quite put my finger on why...

Haha in all seriousness this was a fantastic serving sim and all about dark fantasy coffee! I LOVE COFFEE! ... I should seek help.

Anyways I made it to Day 5 before the game completely overwhelmed me and I failed. The difficulty ramps up super quickly! Was there more to discover in the game regarding features/variety after Day 5 or had I seen it all? Would love to know.

The concept of having the intial drink and having to do little mini-games to switch it to the others was fantastic. I would have appreciated a little sign/picture above them just to remind me which is which at the beginning but I learned pretty quickly what they were so it wasn't a huge deal.

Having to take their orders and make all the coffees became super stressful and chaotic SO QUICKLY by day 3 I already felt in over my head haha. But being able to drink the coffee for a speed boost was a touch of pure genius in design so I was chugging more coffee than my customers by Day 5.

The opening day and tutorial were great and really well done. Didn't over explain or overstay it's welcome, just taught you what to do and left you to it.

Graphically the game looks great, some very simple but well readable pixel art. The coloured lighting kinda threw me off at first because it changes the colour of the coffee in your hand and it's different from what the customers show in their little speech-bubbles. Again not a huge issue I got used to it pretty quickly.

The audio and ambience were great and the SFX were well designed. I especially liked the end of day warning and the increased speed to the music. Fantastic touch.

Overall a great experience. Some more variety and depth to the customers/features to break things up a little would be nice if you decide to further develop the game after the jam.

Thanks for the feedback!

That was all there was feature wise unfortunately, most of it got cut in place of polish/tutorial. As far as the coffee drinking mechanic, I have my partner to thank for that all the way, and it ABSOLUTELY was a stroke of genius! I agree with all of the small issues you noted, thankfully they settled in and didn't detract from the player experience too much in the end.

Great approach to the theme. Really enjoyed it. IMHO everything is great in the game. The music, the art, the animations, the dialogs, even the  important notice on top left (where the clock is) - Thats a really great UI/UX. Respect for that. Minigames were also pretty good. The game already feels like a great product.

I did encounter one small bug tho, but it didn't affect my opinion on the game. At some point two customers went to the same position and it was a situation that both of them are inside of each other and I gave wrong order to them.

Very interesting concept! I like the design. Good job!

Very creative and enjoyable take on the theme! I had a great time playing it, although I feel maybe the workday should be a bit shorter haha.

Great job! I really liked the art and music of the game. I also found the coffee drinking mechanic to be really unique too. Overall great job!

Fun serving game.  Enjoyed the atmosphere and art.

It is a little bit confusing that the drinks ordered and made are different shades.

Fun and great art!

Man, I was doing so good until I wasn't. I love the music! I will say, that I did get confused when it came to which coffee machine made which type of espresso (even with the lengthy tutorial). Maybe it was just the pressure getting to me. Gotta try one more time...

I love the atmosphere here! Great work on the dialog system and transitions. I found myself getting a bit confused with which coffee to give since the color was effected by something above the customers.

LOVE the art. I thin there's a bit too much dialog before getting to the gameplay, also i was getting low frames but that just might be me. really good job! keep making games!

What a fun and frantic game! It's quite challenging and I really the art style! Great game, and I can absolutely see what adding more tasks to juggle would escalate the gameplay! I imagine this would be a great co-op game too if it was developed in that direction. And the soundtrack is a banger! It's stuck in my head as I'm typing this! Really well done!

I can finally live my virtual dream of slamming coffees down!

Awesome game and really nice minigames to go alongside it :)

I got stuck trying to make a latte looking drink? I think I'm just bad at games hahahaha

Fun game. I love the music. I don't like how you have to keep going around that counter.

Submitted

Dang I loved the art and concept, but I got stuck because the glorb pot wouldn't do anything :/

Developer

Were you holding and releasing while holding a coffee from the middle? Both the left machine and the right machine require a coffee from the middle to use :)

Submitted

Ah I missed the part about bringing the coffee to it!

I loved the fast pace, I started struggling a little on the second day, but thats because I wasn't useing the counter as much as i should have been. The idea is so simple to understand and very quick to grasp but quickly gets out of hand! Its very much liek running a coffee shop! The purple hue is also so cozy and I would die for Tim

Very Cozy Very Fun!

Fantastic game! I enjoyed this quite a bit. The artwork is top notch. It took me a couple tries to make the quota. I think the difficulty is pretty good.  At first I didn't realize that people's orders and the actual coffee items are slightly different colors, but I eventually got the hang of it. Well done!

Developer

Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the way the lighting is set up, it slightly alters the color of the sprite above customers heads. We tried to change the shape of the coffees a bit to make up for it, but it still ended up a bit confusing. Really appreciate the feedback!

Well done, I like the art and the music. I'm a bit confused cause the two customers that came in after the tutorial ordered something in a brown long cup, I had nothing that looked liked that so I gave them each of the two different kinds I had. They didn't like it and left. Then no more customers came so I went through the door to get more customers. Then I guess I fell off the map? Good art, good music.
Again, well done, you should be proud!

Developer

Really sorry that the tutorial broke! If you get the time, I would suggest skipping the tutorial from the menu so you can try the actual gameplay loop! Apologies for the inconvenience :(
