How does your game fit the theme?
The game uses the theme (Calm Before the Storm) in two different ways. Firstly, the tavern acts as a calm and quiet place for heroes to relax before they storm the dungeons, which only open at midnight due to some arcane magic. Secondly, an actual magical storm always approaches close to midnight, so the game play takes place before the storm arrives.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
All code was mine. Art and music came from others, see project page for details.

Very relaxing game with good visuals! I think there was an issue with buttons in the inventory either not purchasing an item or not letting me sell a gem, I couldn't figure out why. The card game was a fun side activity, good work!

It took me a moment to figure out how to play the card game, and some things felt like bigger things than planned, but other than that you nailed it! The speed was definitely something. The card game guy made me feel like I was playing Inscryption.

Like builds.games said in a previous comment, there was a bug with the inventory thing but I found that closing and reopening it caused the numbers to update correctly.

I liked the sandboxy nature, one thing I struggled with was not seeing the options button in the lower left corner which is also where you hid the tutorial.

If I had to add one thing it would be an interactive tutorial. Other than that you did great!

I am here because you played Fatten the Beast from that forum post.

Lovely game! Very relaxed and has great visuals. Perhaps it was just me, but sometimes, when I would buy stock, I would get charged for it without having it added to my tavern's inventory. Looking at the comments, that doesn't seem to be a common bug though. Nice work!

With the jams theme, most game tend to get very stressful at some point. Nice to see that we also have games focused on the calm side. I enjoyed my time watching the adventurers in my tavern.

I really liked the little blackjack minigame with the Sorcerer! Nice job on the game!

Really cozy game I played!

And it really teach us why we don't gamble while working :(

Submitted(+1)

Really enjoyable! I'm a big fan of the sorceror even though he takes all my money. I was having some issue keeping things stocked; it seems like I couldn't buy things sometimes and I couldn't figure out why.

Thanks for sharing with my stream! Here's the VOD of your game: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2254453937?t=04h18m26s

The game is really nice reminds me of overcooked with that stress. Was a bit lost on what everything does. I was running out of stock quickly and too many people were coming. Also the blackjack or whatever it was game was also confusing. Also what do the stats do? Cause that was another confusing thing. On the whole, liked it.

Developer

If the game runs too fast, you can easily slow it down by clicking on the back button.  Make sure you buy enough food.

I shouldn't have assumed everyone would be familiar with Blackjack.  I guess I may be getting old...

Submitted

no I know how to play blackjack but I didn't know what the gems and stuff do.

Developer

The gems just alter various stats.  These are stats that are of value to the heroes who frequent the tavern.  The prices they pay depend on them.  So, if you win a heart gem, it boost the health stat of the food and drink you sell.  This would mean more money for items high in health.

I didn't have time to fully incorporate what I had planned out.  I was going to have a meter which showed the demand for each of the stats.  This demand would vary over time, much like in a game like Sim City.  The player would then have to balance stats via which gems were active (another missed feature).  It would also give the player incentive to play the Blackjack game.

Wow, I really should have put some limit on the game speed!  Looks like the crazy high speed may have broken it.

Really cute looking game, loved the music!

Developer

How far did you get? :)

Took me a moment to  understand the mechanics, but overall a fun little game :) I love the skeleton pirate guy,

Developer

That's my favourite character too!

I did run in to quite a few bugs however. Placing furniture would stick to my cursor and wouldn't let me place it, patrons would sit where tables never existed seemingly randomly, and sometimes menus would refuse to do what clicking the button was supposed to do until I pressed it 5 times.

Apart from being pretty buggy I like the core concept. A cutesy tavern-builder/management-sim was a really interesting take on the theme and you killed it with the visuals/audio. It felt like a cozy rainy day at home.

I'd love to see this project at full scale if you decide to keep working on it down the line

Developer (1 edit)

That is strange.  The tables follow the mouse while in placing mode and should set in place upon left clicking.

There may be a bug whereby taking too long to place a table leads to heroes getting confused.

Thank you for letting me know.

The game mechanics are unique and enjoyable.

i enjoyed it!
made me wanna play more and upgrade my stuff and buy more staff
the only problem i had was that i think there should have been a limit for the = making the game limit its speed so the player spends more time in it...and i think it could have had a better ui and stuff
but overall, i really liked it!

ABSOLUTELY love the vibe of the tavern! And I could literally sit there and have the sorceror steal all my money all day (I swear they are cheating) This was really lovely! I was having an issue where people stopped coming into my store after day 2 and the buy menu kept increasing random numbers instead of what I owned. Seriously love the graphics though hope you continue polishing the game!

Developer

I felt the same way at times, but I swear it's entirely random.  In fact, the player has an advantage due to the game shuffling through a single pack.  This means you can have some idea of which cards will show up as the deck gets smaller.

If people stop coming, it's usually because you're out of stock or have no workers, but maybe there's a bug I missed.

The game design is great. I love the graphics and the audio as well as the buying and hiring mechanics. It's not just numbers on the UI either - there's actual units ingame which makes it much better. I am too much of a gambler and kept loosing all my gold to the blackjack dealer though

So glad you enjoyed it.

No harm done as it's not real money.  Just avoid casinos in real life...

An overall great game! But i was surprised the most when i found out that there's built in blackjack! Really loved it!

Submitted(+1)

Love the CALM atmosphere of the tavern and the cute art style! Cant go wrong with playing some blackjack also ;) Great Job!

I LOVE this type of game, awesome job! And yay for Godot! I'm definitely saving this one to come back to later. Only issue I noticed is that when you buy a table there's some text that I think you forgot to hide, it just says "test" on the table lol.

Developer

Thank you so much.  I'm so pleased you liked it.

I should have caught that debug text.  I guess after a while of testing the game, you don't even notice them.

Already, Now it's your turn to try our game, we really appreciate criticism and suggestions, don't forget to vote for us.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

What were your thoughts about the game?
