How does your game fit the theme?
Shattered Haven fits the theme “Calm Before the Storm” by focusing on the crucial preparation phases before each storm. Players must manage resources, make strategic decisions, and support survivors during these calm moments to withstand the upcoming chaos. The game highlights the tension between these brief periods of stability and the looming storms, emphasizing how crucial preparation is for survival. The narrative also delves into character development during these calm phases, adding depth to the story.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
Yes, aside from the background music, and font (both from free resources)
The background image is Ai created

Damn the game is too good. I kept on playing and I suddenly reached the end. Really wonderfully created. The stories during the storm scenarios was so good and just adds more to the survivors other than just tools to get more supplies/food.

The ambient music was good. The UI was decent but could be better, but i also understand it was made for a jam and not too much time will be present.

Kudos!! Really liked the game. Thanks for sharing it in discord.. :)

Thanks a lot for the feedback! Really glad you enjoyed the story sections :)

Nice game, I like the fallout vibes & management of resources. I would personally make it a bit more difficult, like the storm is more impactful/tragic (or like survivors require more food to eat on some hard days, etc.).  But yeah, the idea is executed nicely and good job on the game jam 👏!

Developer

oh the balancing is not great at all :P. Needs a lot more work on what the survivors can do as well. But thanks for playing, and I appreciate the feedback!

Great game! Enjoyed it a lot. The writing feels a bit too heavy handed and not subtle at times haha but I still loved it - seeing the various characters experience the storm and interact with each other was a ton of fun!!

The early game is a struggle but if you make the right decision you can have a really prosperous shelter, I had like 254 survivors with a lot of food and extra building material by the end (': it felt rewarding knowing that I made the right choices when it comes to preparation so I could endure well against bad events like losing half of my food! I also felt the choices were really good and clear.

If I can ask, how did you balance the food system? :D I get that every working survivor consumes one food, but how much food does each survivor gathers? three? I thought it was extremely well balanced!! the building material system was very well balanced too.

Overall a fantastic jam entry, one of my favorites!!

Developer(+1)

Every time a survivor is sent out to a task, they consume an extra food.

Food gathering, building supplies gathering and survivor searching all had a random chance on them (though not a big range, just enough to varry the numbers a bit).
Im glad you enjoyed playing it! I didn't get chance to balance it any more, left it a bit to easy, but then most jokes just want one play through anyway in a game jam :),  so that works for me :D

Nice ambiance, very unique compared to the other games in this jam, I enjoyed playing it. Text based and survival seem to work well together. Audio design is good although I think some more sound effects would enhance the experience. Story is well written, good job!

Developer

Thanks!
Totally plenty of game dev stuff to improve this :), yeah some nice sound effects with the decisions would be great.
Glad you enjoyed the story! thanks for playing

One of the first text based games I've played this jam and I really enjoyed it. The strategy elements were great, and managing risk vs. reward felt very satisfying. Great work! Congrats and good luck!

Developer

Thanks very much for your feedback! much appreciated! :)

I actually got really into it! The writing could be a bit shorter and less descriptive, but overall - a quite enjoyable experience!

Developer(+1)

Thanks, that's good to hear :)
and yeah, it did get a little self indulgent :P. Not as good for game content.

Thanks for the feedback

Usually I'm not too crazy about text adventures, especially game jam text adventures, It often feels like you have to read someone elses unpublished novel without doing anything, which is not really the vibe for a game jam. But honestly with this one, there was enough gameplay/choices that I did feel engaged enough to read what was happening.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the ending, it was nice that it didn't end in world ending storms. But that the people were allowed to rebuild.

My one point of critique is that I didn't actually have to change up my strategy all that much, I could mainly just go 4 -> food, 2 to maintaining, 4 to building supplies. which basically held me steady the whole way through.

Other than that nitpick, it was well done and well executed.

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Yeah you're totally right, text based games like this in a jam isn't usually wise :P. Bit of a bold decision for me :D, but got me to explore doing something different in the time I had.
totally right about the balance, it's far to easy :P. I'm looking into how some other similier ish genre games work, and seeing if that's something I want to continue to explore.

Thanks for playing and rating!

What's interesting is that I'm totally not target audience for this type of game, but I'm surprised that I've been really enjoying myself during the entire playthrough !

You did an amazing job regarding the narrative/ambiant quality. It reminded me of the stress feeling you can feel playing frostpunk, this feeling of "it will be harder and harder". For me the game balance was really ok, I struggled enough without being too much in pain, which allowed me to be kept entertained so on that side too that's a really good point.

A smart decision you made (which might not have been quite easy to do regarding the time you must have invested writing everything) was to summarize what every decision would imply. It allows the player to read without feeling the "need" to read, afraid of losing a piece of information. That made me really more immersed than I though and might even have reconciled me with this type of experience.

Developer

Thanks for the review., I really appreciate the feedback!
I hadn't consciously engage with that thought about summarizing, kind of did it by instinct. But it's great to have you break it down a bit, and it'll be the kind of thing I hang on to and think about in the future.

Thanks for playing, and I'm glad you enjoyed playing!

I would have enjoyed a little more variation in the amount of resources collected per person. I'm trying to make a game like this myself and am going to implement diminishing returns, and variation. I like the ambient music and sfx

Developer

Oh for sure. But with the little time I had this week, I had to cut back on that sort of thing.

maybe if I spent less time on the story/plot stuff,... :P

Interesting concept, for a programmer, I like this type of games.

This is cool, I liked trying to balance growing my population with keeping the shelter alive and having enough food for everyone. My community was in the thousands towards the end, it was satisfying getting so much food and people for my shelter. I'd hate to live there though, I was making people risk their lives at every chance even tho we really didn't need more food or anything hahaha. Great job!

Developer

heh, thanks. Yeah it was really unbalanced and to easy :P. I got to invested in creating the story elements :) (which no one is being bothered to read anyway :P)

I was excited for there to be an Oregon Trail-like game in this game. I either lsot or won at the end I'm not sure, but my resources were through the roof! Until the roof blew off

Developer

Yeah the game balancing wasn't handled well I'm afraid.
By the story you should know if you lost or won :P, but  maybe it wasn't clear enough.
Thanks for playing though

Submitted(+1)

haha in that case Im pretty sure I won!

check out our game too I think you'll like it :)

Developer

Oh good :). Hope you got some enjoyment from the story element at least :P

I Just finished playing and rating yours as it happens :P

Interesting game ! I must say i'm really not the target audience but once i was in the loop i wanted to see if i could reach the end of the game, even if that meant paying a bit less attention to the plot. (I'm really not a reader sorry haha)
The choices during the storms are sometimes challenging enough morally but also strategically as you need to take in count your ressources and i sometimes underestimated the "extra damage" to the shelter ! But i managed to reach an ending !

Developer

Thanks for playing. Much appreciated :).

Totally understanding reading in games isn't for a lot of people :P.  Bit of a niche game style perhaps.
