Hey matey, neat little game! I really love the story, and the monster death got me good. The only technical feedback I have is that it was a bit confusing whether you clicked you then the box, or box then you to join stuff. Furthermore, I think this could be a single click, like you click the box, then there's only one character you can click next (depending on whether object is in reality or dream world) so maybe just skip that step to make it simpler?

And getting critical here, I feel like the mechanics could have been deeper, like at the end where you swap to monster, that really only increased the jump height, a very binary thing, why wouldn't you swap to monster? There could be some consequences of each character. And with the coop stuff at the start, it somehow didn't feel coop. Like they were pulling levers for each other, but the characters could probably interact more? Like when the two were joined, I'd guessed I could make one of them float by standing on ground with the other, possibly allowing them to do puzzly things. And this builds upon the connection mechanic, adding some nuance of of how far apart do you want the objects, and how to position them? So I just think the mechanics could've been deeper for more puzzly moments.

Anyways, really nice game, particularly the story beats and art! I believe this was your first jam, so congrats!

Thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback. You raise lots of points were ideas we had during the weekend but didn't have time to implement. For example, we were going to have it so that you have to walk across the void, but if you were connected and the other person was on the ground, you wouldn't fall. But all great ideas!

Beautiful game, smart use of the gameplay,  smooth take on the theme. Keep it up !

Thank you so much for playing!

Great game, good idea and realization. Although if i were to suggest anything. I would make some kind of indication  when the monster is sleeping (slow and jumps low) and when not. And also I was struggling with level where the  player looses his monster, the level is reall simple, but i thought that in all levels to finish them monster and player have to get to the end. Anyway thanks for interesting game!

Music is Calming, but i got stuck in one of the further levels, even thought i'm not really good at puzzle games i liked this one, good job on finishing in the due time!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Would it be possible to know where you got stuck? Perhaps I can help.

A really amazing game with an emotional and heartwarming story. I extremely like the artwork which perfectly fits into the theme and the music is superb, creating a calm and soothing atmosphere. Well done!

But I do have to point out that there is one little issue that the clicking-and-bonding is not so responsive. Sometimes I have to click multiple times before I can connect myself and my monster or the chest. Also, the single white line is not very visually noticeable. I think it would be better to use a more artistic way to present the line.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this great game a lot. Satisfying presentations and level designs. And I wonder what you have in mind "my monster" stands for when you designed your game. Is it our beloved ones(parents, kids, lovers, friends)? Or is it our alter ego? (our past self has helped us grown and gone through those obstacles)

Developer

Thanks so much for playing and thanks for the feedback. The clicking responsiveness never came up in playtesting, but you're not the first to mention it.

Also, we have a clear idea of what the monster is (the end screen is a clue) but it was also designed to be a little vague so that people could add their own spin on it.

This was really fun. I think you did a great twist on the play two characters at once mechanic, adding enough nuance to make it fresh again. The hand drawn art is lovely.

Developer

Thanks so much for playing and reviewing! The art was from Jess, who did an incredible job!

Really nice one.  I like the concept, I would say just miss some sound feedback ^^.

Developer

Thanks for playing. And yeah, the sound effects made the "not enough time to make" list, but one big sound effect got through.

What a great game! You really got the most out of the limited assets that you used, the style was very cohesive. The narrative begins to take over in a really controlled and natural way, and the mechanics are very well explored. It was a little hard to connect objects, maybe there could have been an outline over the character/object to indicate that the connection will be successful?

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing, and for your feedback. We've heard about the connecting objects being a bit fiddly, and will look to fix when we can. There was gonna be an outline, but then time kept ticking forward and we ran out of it.

So far, this has been the game that I have enjoyed the most. Even though the music wasn't created during the jam, it fit the game completely. The art was amazing, I loved the style. The story was very engaging. The lifeline scene...damn. It makes me think of how we let go of our child selves as we grow up. There's a lot of duality stuff one could think of. Thank you for making this game and sharing it. It's made my day.

Developer(+1)

Hearing you say that it's the game you've enjoyed the most is incredible and has made MY day. This is our first Jam, so it's been lovely hearing such nice comments.

The music, art and story are simply amazing. Had a lot of fun playing through this. The mechanics were simple but had just enough depth to make me think a few times. One thing I did have some problems with was the attaching mechanic, it seemed like I had to be very precise with that part. A very minor complaint for this wonderful experience. Thank you very much for making this.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and for your feedback. We're looking to fix the attaching mechanic when we can, because that isn't the first time we've heard that. Glad you enjoyed it.

The aesthetics and story aspects of this game elevate the playing experience - it really distinguishes this game from other puzzle games in the game jam.  The gameplay was fun, the game presented several interesting mechanics and puzzles.  Great job overall!

Thank you so much for playing!

I like the game very nice aesthetic, i can't beat the level "my monster can do things i can't". the only thing can improve it's sound effects when you use the switch or change characters or connect.... GOOD GAME!

Developer(+1)

To get past that level, you should control the monster while connected. I'd really recommend playing again and getting past that stage, but then I would. :)

Really good game, the mechanics worked perfectly to deliver a touching story which is super fitting with the theme. Definitely one of my favorite games I've played in the jam so far. I don't want to spoil for other people reading, but a certain sound effect later in the game jump scared me a bit.

Developer

Thank you for playing and for such nice words. The sound effect was added in the last hour and we tried to turn it down, but apparently not enough. Apologies about the scare.

THANK YOU FOR SUBMITTING TO MY FORMS!!! I couldn't show it on stream, but ill be featuring it as an exclusive in my next stream because of how good it is!

THE GOOD (what i liked, and what stood out for me):

This is probably one of the best games I've played so far, and don't take those words lightly!

The game is hand-drawn, beautifully made, and has some awesome art. It had an emotional impact to me, especially  the part where the monster leaves and there is a lost dependency in the child, it gives the "joined together" a whole new plane past the regular old reflection style games such as that brain one in 1st place right now. The platforming was much more responsive than I expected and the difficulty curve was amazingly well made, and allows for the players to keep seeing the story without an extremely difficult level mid-way. The vibe was somewhat eerie with the lack of sound, and the freeze frames were very impactful. You have to make this a full game! There was no need for any juice in this game, the lack of it adds that extra childlike tenseness, almost portraying the monster as a somewhat misunderstood entity, and I am inferring this from the first 12 or so levels from a 48 hour game jam, it's amazing, absolutely stunning!

THE BAD (what i disliked, the bugs, and other problems):

There was a lack of audio, and although that adds impact in some way, having it may have made the game even better. Adding more animation, for example, to the text can really change the flow of emotion. For example, if the text had a writing animation when it appears, it can make it seem more childlike somewhat, and then making it more slow to show, or faster can imply tenseness or fear. It would make it a whole lot better, for the full release if you ever make one! Also...
EXPORT THE GAME FOR WEB, THEN MORE PEOPLE CAN SEE IT!!!! (smh gamemaker)

THE HARSH (stuff that would just make the game better, usually just personal opinion, don't take it too heavily :D ):

Maybe you could add some more unique obstacles that the characters could avoid, or some uniquely themed levels that reflect their state of mind. Having a vignette would be an example.

OVERALL: 5,5,5 an amazing all rounder, absolutely stunning, beautiful work!!!

Developer

Oh my god, this review has made my day. Thank you so much for playing. Also, I don't know if you only did 12 levels or whether you were just guessing the number, but it's 15 in total and worth getting to the end. Thank you again, and I'd love to see it on a stream. :)

The hand drawn graphics are awesome!

The art was done by Jess and she was incredible. Everything we discussed came back a thousand times better than I'd ever hope.

That was soothing experiences. Maybe using two characters isn't something innovative at first glance, but I liked the fact that one was upside down and all the twists with connecting your character to objects and then,.. to other character. Very nice narrative too!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing, and I'm glad you liked the story.

The game is amazing, and so are the puzzles,i really loved the artstyle as well

Developer

That's really nice to hear. We spent a lot of time trying to nail the puzzles and make sure they flowed nicely. Also, Jess' art is INCREDIBLE!

Thank you for playing the game!

The only game I've played this jam that made me emotional, and in a way that used the theme.

Developer (1 edit)

I'm so glad you liked it, and that the story worked for you. I added the number of levels in the description, because I think that was good advice. Thank you for playing!
