Awww this was so delightful to play! The world and the characters are definitely the highlight of this game for me, it was nice getting to know more about Birch Grove's inhabitants through the notes on the community board (we need more of Birch Grove). The art was really well done too, it looked so nice and cozy (is that a weird way to describe it)!! And finally gameplay. I did enjoy how simple the gameplay was, and honestly it was fun for me trying to build houses as fast as I humanly could (the timer is scary). There's a lot of potential twists that could be added to the gameplay if this were expanded I think. Really great work, everyone!!!

Thank you so much for playing, and for the kind feedback! Means a lot.

What an amazing game! The art reminds me of bear and breakfast in the best ways!! The font, the voice acting, the music, the characters, wow so much character. The gameplay is super satisfying and honestly my only comment is that I want more. I could see this going in so many directions, a mini game part of a bigger cozy citybuilder/management game, a frantic roguelite where you get increasingly more complex shapes, different types of logs etc, a chill mobile game, a pvp game where you have to finish the quickest and can sabotage eachother (think tricky towers). :)

Developer

Aww, thank you so much for the kind words and ideas!!

Maybe I'm just soppy but I actually did tear up a bit at the end of this game, a solid game with just amazing theming that made me play through the entire game, well done!

Developer

Aww, this comment made me smile! Thanks so much for playing our game!!

Absolutely adorable game! I truly don't think there's any feedback I could give. This game hits on every single front. Gameplay is fun and the game has the perfect amount of content for a jam. The art and sound design is truly amazing and really makes this game for me. Such a delightful game that I can't believe was all made in 4 days!

Developer

Aww, thank you so much!!

Loved the artstyle so much! The music and voice over were so good as well! Very imprpessed with the voice acting. COmpletely obsessed with the font as well (how did you do it?)! Although I loved the initial story, I wish I could have been able to skip it because at some point I had to refresh the page and sit through the opening again.

Onto the gameplay - so, so enojoyable! One of my favorite games this jam! Please consider working on more gameplay and more levels because I would really love this as a mobile game/pc game - a bit biased on mobile because I see few fun games there.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Developer

Agreed on it being best if the cutscenes was skippable, although it shouldn't have played again if you were using the same browser in non-incognito mode! Thanks so much for the kind words!!

i really loved this! the game is nice and relaxing, while still providing a challenge with the logs flowing down the river fast. it's clear y'all put a lot of work into making this come together! :3

Developer

Aw, thank you so much! 💕

Wow super impressed! Art is so cute/stylised so much charm to it! Really enjoyable to play and a unique take on the theme too. Great submission, well done :D

Definitely a top 100 contender! Congrats to the team, this is indeed a really great game.

Also, hats off for the person doing the music for adding a 10/16 (3+3+2+2) time signature in one of the themes variation (the fusion one)

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for the kind words! And that kudos goes Tyler's way; I'll pass the compliment along!

Developer(+1)

Ahhhhh!!! Thank you!! Glad someone noticed the funky time signature in there! It's my favorite track in the game, probably followed by the 6/8 groove in level 3 (Ricky Raccoon)

Absolutely loved the style of the game! Well done! If the dev team were to push the game further I'd love to see how the theme around scale can be utilized in more aspects of the game :)

Developer (3 edits)

Thanks so much! I'm curious — what do you have in mind around utilizing scale more? The scale of the houses you're building changes in accordance with the animal size, which I feel like is a pretty literal interpretation of the theme (building houses to the scale of the animals, or in the case of the community center, multiple animals!) The music also builds between levels, accompanying the growing scale of the community.

Very well polished game! Really gives the impression of what is possible in a Game Jam. Plays smoothly. I didn't find myself using the gnaw mechanic much at all, but I'm sure there's further progression possible that would make the player rely on it further.

Developer

Thanks so much for the kind words, and for the feedback!

That was fun and short, cool mechanic too. I like being able to rearrange the logs when you have already placed them. Placement markers for logs i the wrong place would be cool, and me accidently dropping them outside of te building blueprint was a bit annoying.

Developer

Thanks so much for the kind words! Placement markers in the wrong place would have been a great idea; thanks for suggesting it!

I like easy games and I loved this one, still maybe a harder mode would be cool in future

Developer(+1)

Glad to hear you enjoyed overall! We had an additional mechanic (beaver tail slap) and difficulty settings in mind, but ran out of time to figure out meaningful implementation. We figured it would be better to err on the side of making the levels easy!

This game really worked for me. The opening was juuust the right length, and the writing was really well done. All of it added to the experience as it had so much charm that I couldn't help but love it! Really great work, I wanna play more!

Developer(+1)

Lovely to hear that; thanks so much for the kind words!!

I am actually very in favor of the pregame narrative. I think this game wouldn't be what it is without that. It's the secret sauce that makes this dish compelling, and if you decide to make a bigger paid release, that would sell people on it as a trailer.

Well done! Also, quick appreciation for the little sound effect of the beaver talking. I love it so much.

Developer

Thanks so much for the kind words! And agreed on the animalese; Tyler did a great job on it!

Nice little game!

This is a nice break from how many of the other games decided to take on the theme of scaling (including my own) and for that, it is pretty creative! I think this is one of the harder jams to think of something unique and won't be done by a lot of other people, but you guys found a way and put a whole story to go along with it.

The story of this game is great, just having some form of goal or drive I think can help the player a lot in being motivated to complete a game, and feel more connected with it by the end. I do wish the game didn't loop on itself after you beat it though, since I can make it feel a little strange going right back into the start.

The gameplay definitely was unique, although not super challenging, which is a fine thing, since simple games can be a good relax from the harder ones in the jam, and a relaxing theme really fits the cutesy story of the game too. But, I did find myself basically just placing down anything I could, and then just filling in 1 spot gaps whenever a 2 sized  log came in. I even beat the last level when I had accidentally gnawed twice. (Somehow G and R were too complicated for me to remember??)

It does make me think how would this game play differently if there was a bit more challenge to it, maybe having a given set a logs that the player must choose from, so they need to plan out their chews more carefully. But, overall the game was still very enjoyable. You definitely don't want something too hard.

There is an amazing amount of art for this, and it all looks spectacular, your artist really did some great work :) Lots of polish on all the pieces and getting the little things to go along with it, like the logs rotating down the stream and all the little particle effects, great polish!

Great job!

Developer

Thanks so much for playing our game! I agree with your gameplay critique overall; we had an additional mechanic (beaver tail slap) and difficulty settings in mind, but ran out of time to figure out meaningful implementation. We figured it would be better to err on the side of making the levels easy!

And an additional thanks for the kind words about my art — that last part of your comment made me smile :)

Lovely game, loved the gameplay, the letters, the personality, the sound, really one of the best games of the jam.

Congrats on finishing your jam entry!

Wow, absolutely beautiful production. The art, music, and atmosphere were top notch. I hope your team got to sleep at some point, because this looks like it was a ton of work!

The few bits I would offer suggestions on:

  • The notes that prompt the next level should probably be unreadable, just scribbles in lines or something, and then show the actual message when you click on it. I strained my eyes trying to read the first note before clicking on it because it technically was legible, just very tiny.
  • The notes/dialogue, while cute, was probably just a tad long for a jam game? It's all in service of building the atmosphere, but the art is working on that, too. I think making the notes shorter (and less likely to be skipped through) and the pre-level dialogue briefer would help the pacing feel even better
  • I didn't really feel like I was challenged until the final stage. The gameplay is straight-forward enough, but doesn't feel like it's providing rules for the player to learn. I would have loved to see something else that made me feel like I had to be more thoughtful on my placement. Maybe pre-existing walls that need to be built around, or different log types that the client-animal prefers (birch vs oak, etc?). It just needs a little more depth

But it's a jam game and no one can say you used your time poorly. This game is still a delight. I just like to try to find something to help provide constructive feedback!

This is a great entry. Keep making games!

Appreciate your detailed feedback!

  • Good point! We did this because we were trying to keep the upload size as small as possible, but we could have applied blurring that would have helped in this area.
  • This is the first piece of feedback we got re: feeling like the notes/dialogue were too long!  I personally like the pacing, but I can see where you're coming from, especially if you're trying to just get through a lot of jam games.
  • I agree with your gameplay critique overall; we had an additional mechanic (beaver tail slap) and difficulty settings in mind, but ran out of time to figure out meaningful implementation. We figured it would be better to err on the side of making the levels easy!
