I loved how goofy and fun this was. The sound effects were great and the idea of adding collectibles and level ups to chess is really different.

Great job!

A brilliant twist on chess! I really enjoyed this one. Graphics and sound come together really well, but the real star is the opponent AI that puts up a decent fight that's quite fun. Overall a polished fun game that with some amusing dialog. Were the dialog sound effects made by yourself?

Developer

Thank you for such kind words.  I'm thrilled you enjoyed it.  I did the "speaking" sound effects.  I think that's what you get when you channel the minions and Mr Bean at the same time :)

I love it! It's an interesting idea; it's fun, and the writing and sound effects are absolutely to die for. Perfect combination of goofiness and unique gameplay.

I don't know that I have much in terms of feedback for this actually. Some of the sound effects could maybe have their volumes adjusted because some seemed loud where others were sort of quiet. But really I'm nitpicking. This is excellent!

I really like the idea for the game, the art and dialogue content. As a sound designer i've noticed you went for a very harsh clicky sound for pawn movement/strike, which in repetition may cause fatique and tiredness for the listener. Same for dialogue voices when pawn is moved. It works well for the dialogue intro, but I would suggest an iconic sfx for each type of figure that is not dialogue.

Overall really enjoyed your project, please take all comment as a constructive feedback :)

I really appreciate the feedback! I rely on hearing aids in real life and I admit my confidence and investment in the use of sounds can be rather hit and miss.  What you say about harsh clicky sounds and fatigue is fascinating and something I will be aware of in the future.  It's really interesting that to a partially deaf person, harsh and clicky might be distinctive and recognizable but annoying to those with normal hearing.  Your comments have genuinely helped me be a better game maker and I am very very grateful.

Your comment reminded me about a talk I attended once about accessibility in gaming industry.  You could actually create a feature in options to switch SFX to original ( for people with hearing ads), and you would have one of not many games on jam that support accessibilities :) ! That would be a thing to share ! :D .

That is a freaking excellent idea!

Wow! Quite the unique spin on chess. Mixing chess with donuts. The dialog was quite comical. I really liked the art style too.  Great job!

Impressive twist of the chess formula. Really liked the humor and the sounds. It's a very polished game. I think that having the option to view a list containing the movement of the various pieces would have been a bonus, improving the accessibility of the game for those who don't know the rules of chess. Great job!

Fun game, a cool twist on chess. Nice art and sound effects!

Really fun game, loved the voices, the idea, the gameplay, the polish. Always amaze me to see how chess can still be milked to create more variants.

A surprise for sure, and a welcome one.

Congratulations !

I had a lot of fun with this one. It’s such an interesting spin on chess. I loved the sound effects!

Nice work! It was very fun even for someone who doesn't know how to play chess like me.

Suggestion: medium level description was a hard to read, my guess was 50% but it wasn't very clear to me.

Excellent core mechanic, great game-feel, nice story, not too hard (if you know chess). Great entry. Well done!

Well made! I see potential like that shotgun chess game.

Great concept and execution.  Witty like Monty Python.  I was sweating towards the end.  When I thought the K and Q were safe, I needed 2 more donuts.  Luckily, I pressed the Easy button at the start or I would have been toast.  Nice work!  Thanks.

Fun game! Unsure if this is a bug or a feature but I can move the pawn down vertically and capture any piece as long as it's in that straight line! After that initial move, I can only move it normally. So I captured a Knight piece at the opposite end of the board in one move using a pawn. But otherwise, this is such a cool take on chess and the theme!

Developer

Sounds like a bug.  I tried to recreate and couldn't.  I'll investigate.  Thanks for letting me know :)

Super fun game to to play. The only thing that would have been nice is a tutorial because I kind of had to figure out what was going on. Other than that, it was super fun.

An actual good gameplay twist on a classic board game, makes me want more of this like an infinite mode
