I second the compelling atmosphere and interesting visuals.

Really like the Vibe and the growing flowers mechanic is unique.

Fun! I was impressed with the movement and animations given the development time frame.

You've got a compelling atmosphere and interesting visuals, and a decent gameplay loop.

Some notes on possible improvements:

Variety of play: there's no strategy to placing plants anywhere, I found the best way to play was to just hold all the buttons and put down as many as you can in one place.

Orientation: I didn't feel any motivation to keep me drawn in -- there's no story hook, and there isn't really a positive feedback loop for defeating enemies. You get more "power" but it feels secondary to the game and unimportant.

Feedback: All the little interactions in this game should have feedback -- there's sounds for being attacked and hitting enemies (plus the particles, those are great), but I found myself just mashing Q trying to pick up plants, not even knowing what I was picking up or from where (highlight pickup radius? highlight pickable plants?).

Given the 1 week we had to develop, y'all did great. Love that this game feels well put together in an atmospheric sense and that there's a relatively satisfying moment to be had once you've got a large group of enemies and a lot of plants. My critiques are just the sticking points I noticed were holding back your strong points. Keep working!

Thank you very much, really appreciate the feedback! More interaction feedback is first priority, and we also have designs for different types of effects for flowers, different powerups, new areas that can be reached only when powered up enough, etc. Story is also in the works, just have not had the opportunity to present it in the game.

So yeah, we are definitely working on it, though we did take a few days off - the jam rush was awesome but exhausting, needed at least a couple of days to catch up on sleep, cleanup, go outside, etc.

Cool little game, great visuals.

The environment if given time can be really awesome, and the character design is cool. Once there are a lot of spiders, though, they can reaaaallly eat up the performance, and it tanks pretty quickly. The fact that you procedurally animated the spiders is pretty cool (probably could be what's eating the performance), so I think in a later version if you focus on the environment, combat mechanics, and possibly just give different spiders different abilities, etc this has a lot of potential to be a fabulous game. Great job!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! The performance is impacted by certain trees having colliders and overlapping on each other, as well as inefficient use of particle system (too many lights on particles), and some other things - already fixed in the build we are currently working on, but new issues popped up - the amount of tech debt accumulated over the week of rushing is adding a lot of friction...

The red spider lights in the Jungle make me think of Helldivers 2. Great work!

Developer

Thank you!

I can't stop the spiders but the spiders can't stop me either

There's a lot of beautiful visuals in this game, I had to turn off some of my lights to be able to see everything properly as a lot of the default textures and lighting are a little on the darker side. This isn't inherently bad, it can lead to a really intense and cinematic experience with the right setup.

My only major issue is the lack of feedback when planting, picking, and taking damage. I didn't even realize I was "dead" and just thought I encountered a bug for a second until I realized the same as another commenter did where you can just keep unpausing and playing haha. No worries, temporary fixes are temporary and I see you guys are still working on it and have more permanent fixes ready for after the jam. Very exciting! Can't wait to see how the game evolves and gets closer to its intended form.

Very ambitious within the time frame, but I think it paid off. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the review and interest, we really appreciate it! We kind of intentionally left the lights off, but new version does have sun and moon cycle, looks quite different during day, but not as impactful. Best in evenings/mornings.

Lack of feedback is also addressed in updated version, but still not where we want it to be - need to implement a few more things. Also menu, death state, etc. :D Code is a mess, naturally, but things that can use existing systems are surprisingly easy to add now.

We will see where that leads us - this was really first zone out of 5 in the jungle(earth) biome, also have rough designs of sky(air) and magma caves(fire) biomes, as well as the final boss area/fight. No idea how water biome would work, but can wait until other zones are done :)

I will post more videos/gifs after voting is done (Current build has ally spiders as mobile flowerpots - they help you fight off the first wave)

Very unique game, great job!
Looks really good too.

Thank you, appreciate it :)

Great visuals and atmosphere, and the gameplay was neat, but I wish that there were more sound effects for the enemies, it felt a bit empty without it. Otherwise great work :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! More sound effects are definitely on the way, we were thinking of just adding a sound to both sides of the hit, on the colliders

pretty fun and unique experience. satisfying loop. The visuals and atmosphere are charming, and the gameplay feels rewarding

Developer

Thank you, glad you liked it!

This game is super unique. The visuals are cool and it has good bones for something more. It took me a while to start using plants because I was flipping the spiders on their backs like turtles by jumping into them. Couldnt do that for the big ones so I had to play properly haha. Thanks for the cool experience.

Developer(+1)

Thank you, appreciate it! Can actually bump down big ones too once you gather enough pickups for increased speed. We already have an improved version of the game ready to go, and will continue to polish it a bit more before returning to our main projects.

I went nuts.

I noticed that dying currently just pauzes the game, so I kinda cheated and just kept going until my pc could not produce more than 5 fps.
Some more player feedback when grabbing/planting flowers would be nice, because I did not even realize i was planting stuff for the first few minutes.

Developer

Nice - what a view! We are working on more player feedback - updated version makes flowers more visible while they are growing. Also want to get flowers to fly into the player when gathered, but code is a mess (obviously), so have a bit of debugging to do before its ready.
Performance is also addressed in the patch, to varying degrees of success :D

This game looks super cool! Really nice models and animations, the environment is dark and eerie so the illumination of the plants and spiders are easily seen and distinguished! That big area, wow. I may have had too many flowers at some point, my poor little computer tanked trying to keep up and dipped into single digit FPS, but it was still pretty rad!

I felt pretty unstoppable for a while until I went from 200+ Health to -11 in less than a second, so beware those big guys for sure. Cool little game for sure! :D

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! We have an update ready for after the jam - it addresses some performance issues, makes start more cinematic and less dangerous, flowers faintly glowing even when not producing orbs, etc. Still a lot of work left, but there is definite progress.

Here is a sneak peak:

Cool game! I like the idea of planting plants to fight. It is a bit unclear about how to do things, but overall great work on this!

Developer

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! We are working on presenting the mechanics more visually, adding indicators, etc. Will have a patch out after voting is finished

Submitted(+1)

Good call on adding the demo gifs and gameplay video - that helps! The Power of Nature vs. Metal is a really cool use of the theme that I haven't seen elsewhere. Bravo!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! We are working on a new build with smoother start, but still need a few things to make the gameplay more intuitive. Few patches will be ready after voting ends, with a little bit more polish down the line.

Here is a sneak peak of the new version:

funny name and concept and it was a fun tower defense sort of concept where you can move the towers. nice!

Developer(+1)

Thanks, it kind of evolved through jam into what it is, just lacked time to make the gameplay clearer, as tends to happen in jams :)

Submitted(+1)

Great job on the sound design and particle effects. very satisfying to play

Developer

Thank you, we spend a lot of time on those (and the spider movement), appreciate it!

Submitted(+1)

Really unique idea! I like the vibe and collecting flowers. Holding down R is indeed for the memes.

Developer

Thank you! We are working on a more polished version where it's clearer that's going on - hopefully more fun to play as well :)
