I like the visuals of the game! Gameplay was fun, reloading mechanics was well implemented to prevent spam-shooting. Repairing walls added a layer of hecticness to the game.
Feedback would mainly be on UI. Had trouble finding the checkbox for the "fullscreen" option (grey default checkbox on the background made it hard to see, plus it was oddly aligned). Might need a larger poll on this, but i felt that a tickingdown healthbar for walls would be more intuitive than the current tick-up damage indicator. A visual indicator of "in_reload" and "reload_complete" would be a nice QOL too (understand that there's already a bouncing effect at full magazine)
Solid entry overall!
Thanks so much for the feedback busride! Your suggestions for improvements to the UI make a lot of sense and our team will look to improve those post jam. I also like your idea for the ticking down to represent damage as the walls and doors are being "torn down" by the vamps. Appreciate you taking the time to play our game and I will play Siege of Rozvir and am excited to check our your submission.
Played this game multiple times now, didn't rate it the first time because it was the last game I played after playing and rating a handful of others. Wanted to come back to it with a fresh (less tired) head. Got to say I love what your small team has managed to create in the space of 10 days. It's well designed, looks and plays nice and pretty well polished.
I find it difficult but not in a way that's impossible. In a way that makes me want to play again because I feel like I can do better. I like running from window to window trying to repair it before anything can get in. Next thing I know I'm waiting to reload frantically running around being chased by the one or two that snuck in when I wasn't looking. Then day breaks and I think "thank f..."
Repair what I can and see if I have enough doubloons to scrape together a turret or two to make my life a little bit easier. Pretty solid game loop that keeps you on your toes every step of the way. This has been one of my favourites so far. Well done!
Hi Alex! Thanks so much for making it over to our page and playing. It’s very rewarding to hear you describe your gameplay experience with our game as many of the feelings you were describing were what we hoped players might feel!
For any others reading this comment please go check out Alex’s game One Last Siege! It’s got an addicting and intense gameplay loop of defending against waves and has some fun resource balancing ☺️
Not a problem, I’ve been trying to play as many submissions as I can. Glad to hear that, you’ve done an excellent job then! And thanks for shouting out my game too, much appreciated 😁
The swarm is quite intense, never a dull moment for sure! but yeah the gameplay loop is very good, it is really engaging and I think this is one of those that is worth pursuing further.
Hi zaapp_mks! Thank you so much for the generous review! I haven’t played Turret Master yet but I’ve got it marked on my list to play later today when I am home!
Loving the overall mechanics, flow and style of your game. Very good job on it.
Hey thanks so much Keshiro! Your thumbnail on your game has caught my eye several times as I've been looking for submissions to play and I've been meaning to give it a play. I will leave my thoughts and a rating over on your submission page :D
Very fine game! Love the retro feel, reminds me of the games I played on my Amstrad as a kid. Good mechanics, good graphics, good music! Congrats!!
Excellent game I'm The Firewall! After finding out that your team members all switched up roles for this one I am even more impressed, I mean I loved it anyway but wow! What a cool concept to try out for a jam!
I has been a fun and a stressful experience. And a humble one also. We always think our part is the most difficult one and that is not true at all.
Congrats on your submission! This was very addicting. I had to stop myself so I could try other games haha
Hi Lyghtkruz!
Thanks for playing and for your kind words!
I just got done playing some Skeleton Panic TD! I hope that my comments I left on your submission page will be helpful to you!
Really unique game here! The game mechanics feel smooth and polished (love the ability to repair windows). Definitely a challenging game. Great job overall!
Thanks for playing KevinZer00! Loved your PS1 style zombie survivor game Breaking Dusk!
This is SO sick! The pixel art is so good, and the little animations, I'm obsessed with the raven. I also love the little detail of the tumbleweed blowing across the screen. I played the first level with no trouble, I didn't even realize you could move your character because I didn't have to. I thought everyone complaining about the difficulty was just suffering from a skill issue. Then level 2 started lol.
Seedborne! So glad to see you on our page and glad you had fun! My brothers and I have been excitedly anticipating your review :D I've actually been playing quite a bit of The Last (Hotdog) Stand to help me unwind from the stresses of jamming straight for 10 days!
Man that's so awesome to hear, thank you!!
And yeah I had a lot of fun with the game, it has really solid gameplay and it looks fantastic! Am I seeing right that this is your guys' first game? I don't see anything else on either of your itch pages.
And do you think you'll keep making things? I'll drop you both a follow, I'm interested to see what else you come up with!
that is so kind thank you!
This is our first finished game as a team (Eric and I are identical twin brothers and our youngest brother Brian does all of the sound effects and music)
We have been working as a trio for about two years now but to be honest we are quite shy by nature and the thought of entering a jam was always just so daunting. But after having participated it has just been the most awesome experience.
And I really have to shout out folks like you, Cam (the creator of The Witch’s Last Spell), crazyhounddesign, (the creator of A Last Stand Story), and so many others who created the community posts asking for games to rate. It inspired us to do the same with our thread and has helped get us out of our shells a bit! So again can’t thank you enough for helping to foster such a positive first jam experience for us.
😃
I love being a floating mustachioed cowboy. That said, overall, I really enjoyed this game. I feel like the reload mechanics were more than a bit punishing whilst simultaneously trying to fix windows/doors. I do like the claustrophobic feel to really add the tension of "these doors and windows need to hold, or I die." As a sound designer, I wish there was a variation in the enemy death noise and the gunshots, but that's a nitpick. Solid entry!
Hey swordofdestiny! thanks for stopping by and playing our game!
I just got done leaving my thoughts and rating on Anomalous Intake! An impressive submission with full fledged voice acting. Nice job!
Very well execute game. It's quite challenging! I love the pixel art, especially the elements in the borders of the screen. Good job!
Hi ivanlanc! Thanks for playing! I really liked your pixel art as well. I had a lot of fun playing A Day At Sea!
Really cool idea. I liked it. It had a lot of interesting mechanics. It was a bit on the hard side tho.
Hey thanks for playing Osmicow!
Ultimately I do wish that we had dialed in the difficulty a bit better, or at least given some options so that more players could have enjoyed the later parts of the game.
I did however get to enjoy all four units of your tower defense game Skeleton Panic TD! I put my thoughts and rating over on your submission page 😃
I can see in the comments that there is a day night cycle of some sort, but I wasn't able to survive long enough (for now). I liked the artwork and the audio. Am I supposed to be able to shoot through the windows?
Yes, you are supposed to be able to shoot through windows. 🤠
hi crazyhound! Thanks for stopping by to play :D and yes you are correct the basic flow of the game is a day/night cycle.
Nighttime- shoot those ugly vampires and defend your saloon! You can shoot through the windows and doors so you can pick those suckers off before they start tearing down your doors and windows. However, should the little stinkers do damage to your windows or doors, you can repair the damage by walking over to the hammer icon and holding “e” to board them up.
the first day phase happens when the score hits 60, but you only have 20 seconds of respite before the next night begins. Hope that helps you gauge how far you need to make it to 😃
Thanks, making me feel really bad at games ... guess I'll need to try harder.
No you aren't bad! Trust me we have gotten lots of comments from folks having trouble with that first wave. All in all, I do wish that we would have had some time to adjust the difficulty :D
I'll try being funny another time (my last comment was intended to be cheeky), I really did like the set up of the game and, if I get the chance, I will try it out again. As it's my first jam, I'm trying to play as many games as I can and rate them. The community here has been great, as a new developer and participant, I picked the right jam to start with.
You know crazyhound I did see your community post where you wanted to give submissions that hadn't had many ratings yet some love and I thought that was really awesome. You have definitely been a contributor to the positive atmosphere this jam!
Thank you.
I've only been here for a few days, saw a lot of people were doing it for their first jam, like me, and saw that people want to share and participate. After getting some feedback on my game, the confidence boost and the affirmation that I can make a game worth someone else's time that it gave me felt good. So seeing the number of games submitted and the "low ratings" category, I thought why not help others in the same way. There's nothing worse than taking a chance and it not being noticed.
Enjoyed playing this! Really liked the day and night cycle approach. Was kinda hard though, ngl! :D
thanks for playing! And definitely props on staying alive long enough to see the day/night cycle. Our game is quite punishing on the difficulty so thank you for staying with it!
Edit: Hey! I just came back from playing some Tiny Survivors! I really liked how you handled the difficulty setting at the beginning with the dice rolls that was super clever!
Excellent, really good. Only thing I'd recommend is making the first couple of levels slightly easier.
Thanks for playing montheponies!
I think your comment on the first levels is totally fair, I wish we had at least had a better variety of difficulty settings so people could see more of the game. My poor brother composed three whole tracks but they are hidden behind the later levels
😆
Ever since I saw the title of your game I've been chomping at the bit to give it a try. Going over to your page now to leave my comments and rating. 👍
I really need some tips - I can only consistently get to level 3 :D
Couple of other suggestions would be to have say 3 lives, so you can restart at later levels or make that something you can buy and maybe make the room just a tiny bit wider so you've got a little more room to avoid the ghosts.
But honestly it's an excellently executed game - have to go back to work 30min late due to playing it :D
and thanks for trying out my game, appreciate the feedback !
Hey Montheponies! Honestly getting to wave 3 is quite an accomplishment in it's own right, I don't even get that far all the time. I'm tracking down some of our top players in the comments via their leaderboard names and trying wrestle some of their secrets out of them. Will report back with my findings 😄
You might already have figured these tips out but here are three things that tend to help me:
1) The corner turret slots might be the best places to start putting turrets as they can often defend a combination of West/North or South/East, whereas the turrets in the middle can really only shoot North or South.
2) The dawn phase is incredibly short (only 20 seconds) so I like to kind of plan out what my dawn phase is going to be before it hits. And since I can at least repair during the attack wave, I usually use the first 7-8 seconds of an attack wave to go around and repair. For example I might go "okay when I make it to dawn, I'm gonna do one round of blackjack and if I win I'll buy a holy water turret in the SouthEast).
3) You can figure out where you are in the game one of three ways: the music, noticing the sun coming up from the bottom of the screen, or looking at the score directly. Score goes up once each second from the start of the game. Each attack wave lasts 60 seconds followed by your 20 second rest phase. So after some playthroughs you can sort of calculate backwards where you are at in the wave, sometimes its just about running for that last 5-10 seconds and staying alive til the sweet rays of dawn vanquish those bloodsuckers!
I hope that's helpful!
P.S In the future we will definitely be implementing some of those features you talked about! I think giving the player the option to not have to start over every run via some type of life system is a great idea 👍
Excellent i'll definitely give it a other go. Thanks!
Great game! Really had me counting my shots, making sure I knew exactly how many bullets I had left.
The art and game controls were very good! Awesome job!
Hey there Bat754, thanks for stopping by to play!
To be honest I wish I had played your game Last Pin Standing before the jam ended because I got a lot of inspiration from the variety of ways your waves of bowling balls enemies behaved!
Dang, thanks so much for saying that! If I could go back in time and give you a sneak peek I would! But I guess there's always next year!
cool
Hi Zilpio Gaming! Thanks for playing!
I had fun with your game entry Wine Warriors and left my full comments plus rating on your submission page. 👍I was glad to read in the credits that the game jam helped you reset before you resume work on your larger project. That's really awesome!
perfect !
Hey DragonAl42! Thanks for stopping by and playing! I enjoyed playing your entry Voronoi Game, the controls were very clever and I haven't played anything like that before. I really appreciate your originality in your game!
Liked the theme and the fact that you could gamble to get some of the money back. It's quite difficult, I wish I had some more ways to fend off the horde at an early stage.
Hi Ctrlaltit!
Thanks for playing our game!
I just got done having fun defending planet Earth with your excellent submission The Last Hope!
Left my full thoughts and rating over on your submission page 😄
This was a very fun game to play! The mechanics works really well, awesome work!
Struntprat! Thanks for stopping by and playing our game! Your game The Last Marine made me really happy!!!
very well done, love the take on the western theme and the color pallet.
Boobisgaius! I was hoping to see you around these here parts, seeing as how you are a fellow Wild West enjoyer :D
We loved your take on the theme with Old West Gunfight. For any others who like the Wild West theme but find our game a bit too chaotic and frenetic, I definitely recommend checking out what Boobigaius has submitted.
