I like the mechanics and art style of this game a lot and the themes are very well portrayed. I did run into a lot of bugs and I found the final boss to be really frustrating. When I started, I walked to the left and it took me to a blank screen. I would often jump and the character would start to move slow on the way down, which would always cause me to die. On the Final boss, it is too hard to see the enemies since the background is black. The rate at which the boss spawns enemies also makes it very hard to get up to him. Lastly, I wasn't sure if I was doing any damage to the boss at first until they changed phases. I love the art style and I think what you have made is beautiful, I just wanted to let you know about the bugs and frustration I experienced. The audio picking up as you got close to beating the boss was a really great moment! Hope you can refine this into something even better!

Developer(+2)

Your criticism of the boss echoes my own. It is very valid. And it comes down to a few factors with the main one being I quickly put this boss fight together within THREE minutes of the Submission deadline lol. Other than the music ramping up, there was meant to be some truly special and hype moments in this boss fight, but alas it didn't happen that way.

And as for the enemies being hard to see, this was due to a bug caused by how I spawn the Doubt enemies with varied sets of eyes, which is a separate object. I did it in a rather crude way that fell apart when spawning them during gameplay instead of them already being placed in the scene, which caused them to spawn without faces when the boss summoned them.
I appreciate the kind words in the post, I love getting focused reviews like this!  Makes the game feel like it was worth the time to be written about :)

Excellent indie game! A novel but realistic concept, great gameplay, and unique storytelling. I really like the way the dark range is used to indicate the player's health status. I think this game can be further developed and improved to become a commercial game.

I think the shortcoming is that the level design is not interesting enough. You can refer to the game Gris and the game Hue

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

While part of the levels had to do with running out of time to make them, and parts that would make them more interesting such as spikes (such a basic building block of precision platforming games) and a turret-like enemy, level design is absolutely my number-one weakness in game design. I can IMPROVE and REFINE a level concept or an already-made level. But drafting/creating them just doesn't happen for me in my brain lol.
I appreciate this high praise btw! Means a ton! Couldn't have gotten these results without such a passionate team.

Wow, great music and atmosphere. The introduction to breathing is masterfully done. Felt like the itch version might be bugged so I just played the GD version of the game. Hopefully, both were submitted in the jam time :P

Developer

What kinda bug did you encounter?

Submitted

Breathing wasn't effective on the first bad thought. Not sure why. I tried on gdgames and it worked first try.

Developer

Hmm, thank you for letting me know! I'll def look into it.

Submitted

Who knows. I may just not have timed it right the whole time I tried it on itch and then nailed it on gd... not sure. Saw a streamer also try the game and seemingly making that same mistake on the first enemy. I suppose then that a piece of feedback would be to make it more clear that a breath will be ineffective. When the player holds space, there ought to be a "good sound" when it hits the green. If it goes beyond the green, the purple circle can turn red and there is a "bad sound" that plays to indicate that it won't work (in addition to the sound you currently trigger after the breath). Don't think there can be any confusion then.

Still, the game is fantastic. High scores all round.

Musician here — glad you enjoyed what you heard, thank you so much! 🙏🏽

Had to look it up to confirm it was the real deal. A lot of people use already made stuff :P Found your YT channel and was like "damn, alright". Glad to see a team actually try to make their own audio.

I genuinely prefer making a tune (or reworking a tune) for the purposes of a given jam, 1) shows what I can do and 2) shows the love I'm willing to pour into a project, I hope.

The game is hard ^^' I felt the character could kind of get stuck to the walls after some wall jumps and wasn't responsive as I wanted. But apart from that, it's a really great job with a great art, music and sound design, and the breathing mechanic is interesting. Congrats !

Some really great ideas here. Like the zoom when you breath, the voice acting, great job.

I played this on gd.games when itch was down recently. I love the graphics (especially the main menu), satisfaction from breathing, theming, and message! But the final boss is very repetitive, I kept on encountering a glitch where the game froze me in mid-air because it though I was slowly sliding down a wall even though I wasn't (this glitch killed me on the boss many times), and the platforming controls and physics felt off at times (however I do remember you mentioned this game was incomplete).

I had a weird bug where space-bar didn't work on itch.io so I tried it on gd games instead. I loved the art and concept! I suck at platforming so I couldn't finish it, but that's a me problem. Good work!

Submitted(+1)

I really liked this game! The only issue I had was that the game kinda bugged out and barred me from progressing on one of my runs but the audio and sound design was super effective, the art was cute, and the platforming was really fun and felt intuitive. Great game!!!!!!! <3

Developer(+1)

Can you be more specifiiiiiic

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I suspect it was because I did not play it in full screen mode--at a certain point around the beginning during my first run, enemies would be all over me and when I used the breathing attack and timed it correctly, it would go off but wouldn't hit. But that only happened once and the rest of the time, the game played great! I really enjoyed it and I love the aesthetic and sound track! Every other time I played it, I played it in full screen and it played perfectly. Tbh I'm not sure if there is anything you can do about screen related issues like that but just know that it did not affect my rating (I gave it 5 for all categories)

Very well done!

Very good narrative. Breath mechanic is very original. I really enjoyed my play time!

Great art style and music, love the breathing mechanic and how well it is integrated into the concept and the theme. Good work!

Nice work, I enjoyed playing your game and the artwork.

Really nice take on the theme.
I liked the art style and the approach on the theme quite a bit and hoo boy the sound design and music <3
Troisnyx you are a wizard <3
PS: She did some music on our game as well ;)

I know she did, she is a machine!

Whoa! This game is just great! I like almost everything about it. Only the jump button is a little unusual for me)

The idea is really good but so is every other aspect of the game

Nice visuals loved them ! also check out my game !  😉

The concept about dealing with the enemies just by the pacifst act of breathing in and out is outstanding.

My first impressions on this game were shockingly good. Everything was definitely a 5/5 up until I actually got into a level.

Unfortunately, the platformer character lacks many fundamental features in their movement, specifically coyote time. This resulted in rather frustrating platforming gameplay, that often felt like the cause of death's were the game's fault, and not mine.

The use of free assets mixed in with beautifully drawn hand-made one's was definitely a mistake, and ends up making the game feel very unpolished and thrown together.

On the third level, I also encountered a bug where none of the enemies noticed me and wasn't able to kill them. (No matter how close I got to them.)

I really do like your game, and I implore you to keep working on it after the jam. Great job on this one!

Developer(+1)

Unfortunately due to working a full-time job I didn't have time to fully test and adjust the platforming. I also wanted to add Coyote time but didn't have time to do that and have time to test it.

Also, oof, there actually isn't a single free art asset in this game. It's all the same artist who made everything, including the background and tileset.

Developer

Coming back to this now that I have time to type. Woke up before getting ready for work when I saw this review and the comment about switching to free art really ticked me off, so I replied right away.

Every one of us had a lot going on during the development of this game that didn't allow us to take full advantage of the nine days we were given for this Jam. Including the artist. So "The use of free assets mixed in with beautifully drawn hand-made one's was definitely a mistake" comes off really bad when you realize that it's the same artist, who ran out of time just like I did with making the platforming and levels of the game.
That 5/5 you felt in the intro parts of the game was what we are able to do when we are given the ability to polish to our satisfaction, and when you consider that, the rest of the game's output might begin to make sense to you and you can consider the tragedy of not having enough time to shine our brightest.

Also, the third level is not bugged. I set up some doubts to be like a stationary to be a hazard in future levels, it would have been more obvious if I had time to make more levels, so I can understand why it seems like a bug. As far why the can't die, I couldn't tell you. Never encountered that bug once. If something breaks you can press R to restart the levels, that's on me for not writing that anywhere.

But yeah, to be honest with you, I hate the third level lol. So much that it was actually the second level I made, and thought to my self "No way will the be the 2nd level of my game, instant flow killer", so I moved it to the 3rd spot. But alas I kept it in.

Submitted(+1)

Sorry if I came off as a little passive-aggressive, I like your game, I really do! I probably shouldn't have jumped to such drastic conclusions and state that some assets were not created by the team. I should have definitely phrased my sentence differently and I apologise for upsetting you. I simply find some of the art assets clash in terms of style and colour schemes, and there's an extension called "advanced platformer movement" that allows you to add coyote time in mere seconds. Again, I humbly apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Submitted(+1)

This is so good. Thank you.

Submitted(+2)

WOW! The sound, the art (especially the intro movie) and the visual design and everything is so great! Clearly the whole team worked very hard. Reminds me of Celeste and musically Kingdom Hearts in the best ways. Amazing entry, great job!

DeveloperSubmitted

Musician here — thank you so much! 🙏🏽 Kingdom Hearts was one of my earlier influences, and I still enjoy playing the earlier games in that series.
