Great concept. I really like the pixel art shader that you've added. Compressing scraps puts you at risk of an attack, which is a pretty natural yet cool mechanic.
I think the problem with a first person action game is that sound effect is very important in letting the player know what's happening in the surroundings. Right now, it's difficult to know if an enemy has spawned. Still, it's understandable that there is not enough time for it.
Great job on the game!
Yeah, I ended up wasting a chunk of time on trying to model and texture the entire environment before realizing that was not going to work out in time and instead implementing the render feature as you see it now. That cut off my time for sound which, as you pointed out, left some big issues in keeping track of the world and enemies in it. That also included time to have a friend test the game where I could have noticed some other issues with the difficulty :s Such is the life of a jam though hahah
I'll definitely be working on polishing it all up post-jam!
Thanks a ton for taking the time to play and give feedback on my game, I absolutely loved yours!
It's really fun once you get a feel for it. Of course as you already know audio/music would be amazing. I think what would help a lot is less boulders and more of some other kind of enemy type. For me I felt the optimal strategy was to build up speed strafe jumping, and If I did this correctly the boulders could be completely ignored. However, when moving slowly they are nearly impossible to avoid, so maybe an enemy that shoots slower moving projectiles to make circle strafing more difficult and less boulders to make some moments of respite a possibility (just my suggestion, I'm sure there are other ways to balance as well).
Also, I feel like a got a pretty good score so I want to show off :)
Amazing score!! Better than me hahah
So, strafe-jumping was actually the intended way the game was to be played. However, I realized after barely making the jam end time that there's almost no way people will know that's what they are supposed to do outside the dialogue about jumping, which even then is really cryptic and still confusing. My plan is to make the standard jump apply the same speed as strafe jumping and kill strafe jumping in favor of that. There will also be a short segment at the start of the game that has you complete a super short jumping introduction just to get the player understanding the mechanic. Hopefully that will fix the issue people have with how unfair the speed is without strafe jumping. I don't blame anyone for not working that out hahah
Alongside that, I'll be adding some cool new enemies that spice up the gameplay in fun directions, so hopefully you'll get to see things when the come around in a more polished and exciting fashion :)
Thanks a ton for the feedback though, I'll do some testing with the idea to see how that feels!
Very fun game, with creative concept. I love the overall aesthetic too, I also notice that every time I collect scraps, the shape is different, the details! The run-collect-shoot mechanic also feels good & well executed, avoiding the balls is really hard though, but I think with just sound you can raise player awareness of the enemy also enrich the experience, I can only imagine Doom's music to get player pumped up :D
Overall really solid work, love to see this expanded! Good job!
I really hope to be able to have a friend or two join on to expand the game out with good sound and hype music. I definitely agree about sound likely heightening awareness to surroundings. I'd love to get things to be really clean so you can focus on movement and awareness and not just fearful of a sneaky backstab any any second hahah
Thanks a bunch for playing and for the feedback :)
A very unique take on the game jam theme! Amazing design! I keep dying from enemies coming from behind me, but that can be easily fixed with having a minimap/sound indicator. Overall, great work!
I'll definitely be giving some things a go and see what I can work out to fix the unfair death situation!
Thanks for the feedback :)
nice :)
Thanks for playing :)
It looks awesome! Really good!
I'm glad you enjoyed the visuals!
Thanks for playing!
Visually, it's excellent - the lack of sound is a bit of a shame, though. And the link to the theme seems a bit tenuous...
Yeah, I really regret not bringing someone on board to do sound while I worked. I think in the future I'll be forming a proper 2-3 man team to give a more well rounded experience :)
Thanks for the feedback!
I really liked the eerie atmosphere, the deafening silence with these mysterious orb things coming at you from all sides. Really well done!
I super appreciate you uploading gameplay footage! It really helps highlight how others think & play the game and what I can do to make sure those first few minutes are really solid, understandable, and fun :)
Thank you a ton for the feedback and thank you for playing!
An idea that I can’t do! The world view and the rough shader match very well. At first, I died several times without knowing the reason, but it was fun to know how to raise the score.
Yeah a re-balancing is definitely in order hahah
Thank you for the feedback and thank you for playing!
Really good looking game! I like the whole aesthetic of it, amazing job! The balls took a few deaths to get used to, but it was fun :D
Glad you had fun playing my game, thank you very much!
Oh man, this one made me feel like I was playing an extremely difficult game of dodgeball! Lots of fun adrenaline feelings (and a little bit of anxiety as I suck at dodgeball) haha
love the concept, very original. Great job! :D
Thanks a bunch for giving it a shot, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
nice game.
Thank you for playing :)
This aesthetic is so cool! Chucking the scrap into the fire has a great weight to it. Well done!
Happy you liked it!
Thanks for playing :)
I really like the visuals and the simplicity of the task. But I've had issues with seeing enemies since there is no feedback on their position, like sounds getting louder or even directional sounds. Their movement is also hard to predict, so movement speed being relatively slow makes it hard to evade them.
I definitely agree, sound will add a lot to this game for balancing things out, the currently random nature of getting bodied from behind is pretty frustrating especially once you start getting the hang of things.
Thank you for the feedback, it goes a long way for helping me grow :)
The aesthetics of this game stood out to me; it captures the trash heap vibe and the intense situation really well. The game feel is also nice, gathering scrap felt satisfying and having the warden mock you when you die quickly is nice for flavor. It was difficult to see the boulders coming from behind / from peripherals, so my character died pretty quickly many times. Fittingly brutal situation. XD
Oh man! I was getting worried no one would find that hidden dialogue hahah I'm really glad to see you did, I wasted time on that feature that I really should have put into testing, sound, or balancing. He pulls from a list of phrases and one of them changes based on how many times you've done a certain action. Really pointless and a bad use of time, but glad someone enjoyed it :)
As for balancing, things definitely need to be worked out, it'll be the first thing I work on post-jam!
Thanks for the feedback!
wow, this game looks amazing. props to you for making such a cool shader, it really made this game stand out. i think it's in dire need of some sound though, a lot of times i felt like i was killed by an enemy i could've dodged if i had been able to see it
Totally think sound would do a lot for this game, it's high on the list of priorities and something I want to really take my time with or pull in a friend to work on :)
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!
Very cool! I like the different goal than most FPS, to smelt things! If maybe there was an audio que of when enemies were approaching, or they threw some of the ground around as they approached, I think the game would be much more beatable. Overall great work, and a few tweaks away from a solid game.
Totally love the idea of blending in some good sound design to help balance things out! Also, the idea of them scattering the ground a bit while flying is really cool, I'll have to give that a shot at some point to see how it looks, or how it affects average performance hahah
Thanks for the great feedback :)
It's really hard to avoid giant ultra fast boulders in first person while being focused on something else
While I do want this game to have dual focus, I really didn't hit the nail on the head balancing the two. I'll definitely be working on that and keep these kinds of things in mind in the future :)
Thanks for the feedback!
You're welcome !
Interesting idea. I really wanted to pl ay a whole bunch of this, but the game is simply too difficult.
Maybe a less pronounced difficulty spike would be great.
Still, the graphics in this are very stilish and pleasing to look at, and the whole concept is a fun one indeed.
I would add maybe some arrows that point towards enemies, so that you have some visual feed on whether you're about to die or if its safe to collect scrap.
Overall, 4.25/5 for me, great job, I'm looking forward to playing your future jam games, you seem like a very talented Dev.
I'll be messing around with things to make the game ease a bit better, I do want it to be difficult, but at it's current state it's very wonky on that side hahah
Thanks for all the feedback! I love hearing peoples thoughts to help make better decisions in the future :)
The graphics are very stylish and convey the mood perfectly. The player controller is smooth. However it took me a while to figure out why I was dying and the difficulty curve seems very high as you get smashed by three boulders in the first 30 sec of the game. Some sound effects and music would have been welcomed too. Kudos for the idea and world building thought!
I definitely will be doing some big changes to get things re-balanced, this was one of those big issues I could have fixed if I had play tested, as the problem is pretty noticeable hahah
Thank you for the solid feedback :)
