It was a bit confusing at first but a really clever idea, I thoroughly enjoyed it!  It would have been nice to get some feedback that certain verses don't affect the stories, or maybe there is but it's not working?  Faster movement and climbing would be good, not critical but it does get a little tedious repeating parts.  I hope you continue working on this, great job!

I liked this one a lot, the idea of rearranging whole parts of the game based on the ordering of the books is really interesting.

I started to get bugs when it tried to explain to me how to put the verse back to the start, but I was able to continue, though the message stayed up there the whole time.

I may see if there's any way to make that message go away if I do that part more slowly when it's trying to explain it to me, but I think it might be a bug.

I thought this was a really original, unique and fun submission - really nice job on this!

Developer

Thanks for letting us know - we'll check out the bug. Glad you enjoyed the game, we had fun putting it together!

This was a very enjoyable concept! However, it is a little buggy. I got a few clues popping up on my screen, such as the "right click on the button" one, which did not go away. Also, I can't seem to figure out what it is that I'm supposed to do with the verses.

Aside from a UI bug and a player communication issue, this is a really fun idea and I liked playing it!

Thank you - glad you enjoyed playing it! You can access the verse edit screen by clicking on the quill and ink pot icon in the main screen, and from there drop verses into the different books. The tutorial clues should disappear once you take that action and then also explain more on what to do. Did the text not go away when right clicking? - thanks for letting us know!

Submitted

I don't know, it only happened once and didn't seem to want to go away. I think I would have tried right clicking, but I don't specifically remember. If it happens again, I'll tell you about it!

I'm sure everyone else has also already complimented the main concept of the game which is great. I wished there were some more actions the player could do instead of just walking, jumping and climbing. You could do such great puzzles with this idea. I also got annoyed sometimes when my character would die in the air. Great game though!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback - some good points to keep in mind if we decide to develop it further. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for playing!

I loved this idea! Super original and a great setup for some puzzles that I found satisfying. It's a bit rough around the edges, and I found a few bugs here and there, but really nice job coming up with such an engaging way to  rearrange the parts of a level. I bet if you continue working on this and polishing it up it could be a nice, cozy puzzle game!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for your kind words - glad you enjoyed the puzzles!

Cool concept that makes great puzzles. Having multiple tales in a single game is pretty cool ! The main issue I encountered was the book placement, sometimes all books are placed and the game doesn't realize, and somtime the fuse together and I had to remove them on top of the shelf then put them back (I spent 2 whole minutes stuck in that and trying to place them). I think (from what I saw) that the books, if you place them between two areas, are considered in the two areas together and that creates the bug. Maybe using the mouse as the only thing to put in the area (really tiny) could prevent that. It's also kind of weird to die in the air sometimes but I guess that was intended to make use of the game mechanics. Anyway, cool visuals that represents the stories well, and good mechanics especially moving the books to change the map layout (reminded me of the game Carto). A really original entry, Great job !

Developer(+1)

Yeah, the books are a known issue, the easiest is to go back and forth to the verse scene for now, sorry about that! The collisions were indeed intended, we just needed more time to implement better. Thanks for your kind words and for playing!

Submitted

A really clever idea, very original as far as I can tell.
I wish the implementation was half as good though.

The existence of random killboxes (areas where you just.. die) were annoying.
I could not collect all the medallions, but I might come back to this game to do that.

Developer

If only there were more hours in a day! Thanks for playing!

I'd love to play this game properly but I'm stuck. I only have one book in my shelf and I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

Developer(+1)

Now click on the book icon, where the mouse cursor is on the right, so you can explore the book. Have fun!

The game is mostly fine, but has some issues. It's a great concept and cool idea, etc., but has some things that make it not as good. So the bugs with verses, where they appear and disappear and when you want to change them they bug, it's not game breaking but could be fixed.

The man's hitbox is weird. When you turn he's in a different position and he can walk into a wall.

Now, in the magic carpet zone, there's a piece of medallion you can't get. When you try to jump on it from wherever, you die right above it as if you hit the ground. Death in the air. No way of getting it. So it makes the game incomplete.

I liked that you can actually read the books and change the verses, but putting verses in any other than intended book mostly seemed useless. Didn't get how to get rapunzel zone medallion. Otherwise, really good game with good idea. After some time, music also feels quite repetitive.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. We are a three person team that made this game in 9 days, we are aware it is not optimal but it's always a great opportunity to learn. Can you explain which bug with the verses you encounter?  We made it so of you rightclick the verses go out of the books quicker to save time, is that it? The adventurer's hitbox is indeed weird, we wanted to experiment with the skeleton2D node, which does not have a flip_h value, which was a good learning experience. The medallion in the magic carpet zone you can get, we just didn't want you to get it from above, maybe try a different verse in the book (which we tried to make the main mechanic, so that is important). Same goes for the Rapunzel medal, remember here that actions have consequences and you will be able to get this one with a bit of experimentation. We are sorry you were not able to get all the medals and feel you have played a repetitive and broken game, we tried to do the best we could in the time given.

Submitted

So I don't remember exactly what was happening with verses, but right click was working fine, it was dragging with left mouse button that bugged. I think once when I tried to remove a verse from a book by dragging it disappeared completely and I had to reopen the verse-book for it to appear again.

With the carpet medallion, if it is not meant to be acquired by air, you should make something that hints at it. Because right now, there's nothing indicating that getting it by air is the wrong way, you just die in the air as if there's bug and no indicator of what killed you is there.

Developer (2 edits)

Thanks for letting us know, though we can't seem to replicate the bug. Did you play the webversion, it might have lagged a bit there? Would it be possible to send a screenshot? We have a known bug in the book scene but the verses should be working.  We agree it would be good to have a collider for dying in the air -  we had a few ideas for this but it wasn't feasible to implement everything within the game jam timeframe. The carpet medallion is not the only one that has that. Sorry if you found the puzzles too difficult, we did try to make it fairly challenging within the time frame. Thanks for trying our game!

i think the concept is great, clever an unique.

I like the alliteration in the name hehe I also like the music and sound effects. OHHH I like the concept of the worlds merging based on the order of the books, thats neat! The shelving of the books is pretty satisfying. I love the idea that adding the lines in the story adds to the world of the books. The art for the books is really pretty. I managed to find all the medals! Though there were some times the death plane was a bit strange, and the vines or hair had a strange height limit for climbing. Overall it was a lovely concept and I enjoyedsolving the puzzles!

Thank you for your kind words and feedback - glad you liked it!

Very cool submission, I really like the concept, although I did find the control to very a little confusing.

Developer

Thank you - glad you liked it, and thanks for the feedback!

Interesting idea and well executed. Got all the books and only one verse missing, the only negative is a bug where the "enter book" button dissappears if you accidentally pick multiple boooks, but overall is very enjoyable !

Developer(+1)

Thank you - glad you enjoyed it! Thanks also for for letting us know about the bug.

This is such a clever game with an extremely original idea. Utilizes the theme really well

It's weird and I love it. It lags a bit on my laptop and there's a number of bugs that happened when I was dragging the books around. The concept is great. The art is charming.

However, I think mechanics is where the game kinda suffers. The character is slow. The climbing is painful. You can't move side to side while climbing.

Nevertheless, I had a good time while playing. It was laggy and I have no idea why. Maybe my laptop was hot.

Developer

Thanks for your feedback and glad you enjoyed it overall! We could definitely work on the mechanics more - we were experimenting with bone 2d animations which had a few challenges in implementation, though you can move side to side while climbing if you also hit space. ;) That's a shame it was laggy - were you playing the web version?

Submitted

Pressing space would mean I also start falling which I kinda didn't want.

Yeah, I was playing the web version.

Holy cow this game is clever! At first, I thought the game is kind of like "Little To The Left" but as soon as I clicked that book icon, I went "Ohhhhh!! Niceeee!!". lol

The theme is also well-incorporated. Beautifully done. Awesome!

Thanks so much - glad you liked it!

I think this game really uses the theme of folklore well - excellent job! I cheesed a few of the verses with some tricky parkour, but couldn't figure out where the fox medallion was. Overall I think this is one of the best games based around the theme!

Developer

Thank you! Yes the fox medallion is one of the trickier ones to find. ;)

Fun concept,  pretty cool execution, I managed to bug it by picking up the book before the tutorial came out, great!! Congrats man

Developer

Thanks - glad you liked it!

A fun and unique concept! I loved that it wasn't just about matching the line to the book - having each story fragment do something different in every book gave it a charm and unique exploration mechanic that was a lot of fun to mess around with! I'd work a bit on the collisions - I was able to enter blocks at times, and the death planes' positions sometimes felt a bit arbitrary and needlessly punishing. Regardless, amazing work, and a blast to play!

Developer

Thanks so much - yes we really tried to come up with something unique, so we're glad that came across and was fun to play! Thanks also for the feedback around collisions and death planes, these are good points.

a very original idea and use  of the theme! This really also flexes my knowledge of what I can remeber with these story books.

Thank you! Hope you enjoyed the trip down memory lane. :)
