The artstyle and controls are great. But not sure how to gather materials.

Developer (3 edits)

Hi! You can press E to interact with objects when there is a prompt on the screen. You can't gather resources before interacting with the workbench in the center of the map. If you give the game a second try, I would love to know your experience :)

Ahh that was it. I would recommend highlighting the bench to draw attention to it and also since the enemies using the same sprite as the player, I would recommend a way to indicate it's an enemy. ie red tint.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I have a small post-jam patch ready that includes some highlighting to the workbench. The enemy sprites have similar colors to the player's, but are actually unique. I might test new colors make them more distinguishable, though.

Really nice art style and all the juicy parts of the game that make it so satisfying. Oddly enough I also found the pause menu transition really cool. There's nothing to really improve upon here! :)

Developer

Thanks! The pause menu animation is just a modified version of this shader and a couple cubic transitions.

Great art and vibe! Also, really well done with the "pace" of the game - the actions, the progression within the day. But what's really lacking is a sense of progression between the days - except for some extra enemies, it doesn't feel like anything changes... And the levels you get don't feel like they matter or give you anything. But as a demo - it works great!

Also found two minor bugs: when you press upgrades you can afford by one resource but can't by the other - you still lose resources on click. And if you press "e" while you already started collecting some resource - you switch to another one, but the previous is not accessible anymore (but still look uncollected). Ad if the flag for being collected got checked, but the collection didn't happen.

And a major bug with fire - it froze my browser, and even on the exe version, the first fire took about 10 seconds to initiate.

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Hey! Thanks for playing and for the feedback. I hope despite the bugs you still had some fun :)

I was trying to understand what was triggering the resource nodes bug but couldn't figure it out, so thank you for pointing it out. The upgrade one was just some very very bad coding on my part and I've already fixed it for a post jam patch. The fire freezing the game (which now that I think about it is very ironic) is probably me not loading resources properly. I've really struggled with performance in all of my games so far...

For the levels, leveling up increases your damage and max health, but that is not clearly communicated. I'll try to change that to give a better feedback to the player.

For the progression, because the game has no story and just a single map, I agree that after each day it can feel like nothing really changes. You can try to scale your character faster than the enemies and see how long you survive, but that is it. Enemies gain more health and damage the more time passes, and they spawn more frequently. The current version has a very slow start, but after 4 to 5 days things can get out of hand.

Totally! It somewhat reminded be your duck-game, but this one is way more pleasant in pace of combat for me :)

Incredible game, the graphics are so simple but lovely. The pixel art is gorgeous. I love the detailed animations e.g. the blades of grass when you walk through them. I love seeing polished games like this - well done.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I'm always happy when people notice the little details I sprinkle around :)

It's crazy you managed to complete this in the week. It's so fun and polished, it feels like a small complete game. No complaints, and I'm not sure how I'd even improve it.

Developer

Thank you so much!
In past jams I said as a joke that sleep deprivation was my secret, but this time it's kind of true

What an awesome game! It was a lot of fun, very relaxed at first, but the difficulty definitely ramps up and it was a nice challenge to balance the resource grind with the increasingly large waves of enemies. I honestly think this would serve as a great foundation for a full game, I really enjoyed it.

Developer

Thank you! Happy to hear you had fun and enjoyed the game :)
I'm already working on a full release for another game of mine, but I'll definitely update this one after the jam

Submitted(+1)

Awesome, polished experience. Nice job!
The music reminded me of Donkey Kong's famous water level track :D
The only thing I missed was some sort of ending (or maybe I didn't play long enough).

Developer

Thanks!

I was going to make some sort of ending/story, but I decided keep things simple and just make a score system this time (mostly because of time constraints). I think I'll add more enemies and areas to the game after the jam to try and tell a short story. For now though, it has no ending

This was an amazing game! The slow pixel art style is very appealing to me. The game plays wonderfully, and sounds really nice! I’m hard pressed to think of anything to critique about the game, so I will not try. Excellent work!

Here’s a link to my playthrough, if you want to revisit :D

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words Mr. Obsidian!
I had a great time on your stream :)

Wow, this game is great!

I love the artistic section, that tiny pixel art and the music, with a very high level of polish.

It's a simple survival game and it works very well, the difficulty curve is pleasant, and it encourages you to continue playing.

It is a very complete game, congratulations, great work! :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback!

Glad to hear you enjoyed the difficulty curve, I had close to no time for playtesting and was worried the game would either be too boring at the start or get too difficult too fast

Submitted(+1)

At first I was like, "well, it's just a twin stick survival game but you need to make a campfire once a night. How hard can it be?" A few minutes later, I was frantically trying to weave through the pile of enemies to relight the fire before it went out.

I did have some lag spikes even on the executable, and I also noticed a strange bug where if you start harvesting another resource pile without finishing the previous one, your previous resource pile will be left intact but unharvestable. The game feels complete otherwise though - SFX, art, and juice are all at a very high level of polish. Well done!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback!
I must be doing something wrong with Godot, because most of my games have had at least one or two bad lag spikes or performance related issues :(

Submitted(+1)

Lovely art style and a great take on the survival concept! Would love to see more of this, especially things like additional enemies and buildables!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Glad to hear you liked the artstyle :)
I was going to add two bosses, but ran out of time... Maybe I'll do it after the jam

This looks so cool and I want to try it. My browser completely hangs after a few seconds in the game or after I created a fire. I see someone else mentioned it hung for 30 seconds but my Chrome tab would just crash.

From the little bit I could see though the art, music, atmosphere, UI and everything goes together so well. Great job! Will check this out after the jam if you put up a fixed version.

Developer

Thanks! I'm really sorry about the lag and the crashing. I'll try to improve the browser version after the jam, but if you want you can still download and try one of the executables, they run much better. If you do, I would really love to hear about your experience with the game :)

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I completely missed there was a download version. I got that and it worked! Still some lag making the first fire, ~5 second stuck screen, then the rest of the game it was fine. So glad I got to play this was a lot of fun and so well made! My final score was 164640.

I like one of the upgrades was life steal axe. One of the first things I went for. I was wondering how many enemy types there were and it was cool a new one would appear every so often. I really like this art style as well. I wish had artistic skills like this. Making meaningful and recognizable characters with small sizes is such a talent.

Odd thing but I like how you have the character warp to the left side of objects while collecting. I think that was a clever way to solve having to make different animations depending on the angle.

Great game. You should do more with this project!

Developer

Thank you so much, reading your feedback made me really happy. I'm really glad you went back for the executables :)
I'll release a balancing patch after the jam, maybe even add a little more stuff. I'll also probably make all the assets I made for this project public

Submitted(+1)

Awesome game! It is fun and satisfying, it has awesome music and SFX, and I love the art! Good job!

Developer

Thank you! Really glad to hear you liked the SFX and music, those are not my strong suites

Submitted(+1)

It just feels complete. There wasn't any real bug I came along while playing and the graphics look cute. At first I tried the web version but due to so many particles loading, I had to switch to the downloadable version. I had fun playing it, I loved the combat and that you could destroy the grass and other small things. I loved seeing my character chopping wood and defend his camp in the night

Thank you for making it!!

Developer

Thank you so much! I'm really glad to hear you had fun and appreciated the little details I sprinkled in :)

Wow, love this game. The music, the graphics, animations, all. Super fun.

On the browser version, when create a campfire the first time my CPU go to 100% for 30sec.

Great work.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it :)
I'm sorry about the lag tho... I think I went a little overboard with the particles

Submitted(+1)

I also had minor lag spikes on web browser, but admittedly my PC struggles with web-based games for some odd reason. I absolutely love the art style of this game - it's one I need to get better at myself - and overall the game looks and feels very charming. Adorable (:

Developer

Thank you! I'm grad to hear you liked the artstyle adn enjoyed the game :)
Very tiny pixel art can be very tricky to get right. I probably spent a whole day just for the player attack animations...

Submitted(+1)

This is so good! One of my favourite entries by far! The whole art style is so simple and so charming, the colours are amazingly well picked, everything reads so clearly that you're led through the game quite intuitively. I was never confused, and always knew what to do, and of course it is really polished!

Bit of lag online when building a fire or fighting, as others have mentioned.

My only feedback is that maybe I'd have liked a little progress bar for harvesting items as I often interrupted it halfway through accidentally.

The upgrade system could also use with a bit more polish so it indicates more clearly when an upgrade has been purchased and if an upgrade is available for the resources you've collected.

I had a really great time playing this.

Developer

Thank you so much, I'm glad you had a good time :)

I still can't figure out how to make the browser experience smoother, maybe one day. Also, I agree about the upgrade system. I did it in a rush, so it didn't come out as good as I wanted. Thanks for the nice feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Dang, what solid entry!  Super cohesive, everything works really well!  I had hitches on the web whenever I lit a fire, which is really weird because I would have expected to only have the hitch once for the shader compilation the first time.  Same when the monsters started attacking with the energy blasts.  Downloaded the exe so I can have a smoother experience later.  One thing I did struggle with is the identifying the icons.  I'm partially color blind so that could easily be part of it so I had to rely on the interact prompt to know to mine or harvest or whatever so I'm guessing I missed several assets and have trouble distinguishing some from each other.  There might also be some bugs with the upgrades?  I clicked to upgrade piercing knowing I had some of the material but unsure if I had the other and it definitely consumed the one material I did have but I suspect I didn't have any of the other.  Even so, I had a lot of fun and will make more attempts!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it :)

I'm sorry about your struggle with the icons e sprites. The pixel art is so small that some times assets blend together. I should have picked slightly different colors for the resource gathering nodes or used a highlight shader.

The upgrades bug was just some bad coding on my part:

if player.iron >= iron_cost:
    player.iron -= iron_cost
    if player.grass >= grass_cost:
        player.grass -= grass_cost
        if player.sticks >= sticks_cost:
            player.sticks -= sticks_cost
            if player.berries >= berries_cost:
                player.berries -= berries_cost
                upgrade()
