it did everything it needed to do and the controls are very intuitive when you get down to it! Great art and direction and short game that tells you enough of the possibilities you can have with this game mechanic! Thank you!

I’m still a bit confused on the purpose of cleaning the corruption. At first, I thought it was required to open a door, but it turns out I just needed water for that. Then I figured perhaps I should avoid it because it might be the thing that reduces the water effect. But nope, the water just fades over time on its own. Finally, I noticed the purple health bar (which is the same bar as the boss’s health) decreases whenever I clean a corruption. So, I’m guessing it’s meant to make the boss fight easier?

If that’s the case, then perhaps it’s an intentional hidden mechanic. I get that you might not want to spell it out in the tutorial, but maybe an indirect hint would help players connect the dots? For me, it’s just a shame that such a cool mechanic, which ties perfectly into the jam theme, might go unnoticed. Even after completing the game twice, I’m still not 100% sure if that’s really the intended purpose.

Developer

You're absolutely correct, the purple health bar is tied directly to the bosses final health. So while it's not completely required to clean all the nodes, it makes the final boss an easier fight. It is supposed to be more of a hidden mechanic you wouldn't know about until the end of the game, but in hindsight more hints probably would have been for the best. Thank you for the feedback, and for being so perceptive to our programmer's hard work!

Scrub Thy Trident! The sprite work and the animation are fantastic!!! Not to mention the gameplay fun even sometimes a bit slippery (maybe that does add the feel of water to it, lol) seeing her go fast is just entertaining!

Overall, this is amazing! I did found a little bug where the music doesn't play when I retry at the boss but still, an Amazing game!

This game looks really nice! The controls are a bit slippery at first, but jumping and sliding around in this is pretty fun too, even if I can't land on a platform to save my life. I think you did a really good job here.
I was a little worried about having to backtrack the whole time for the little puddle at the beginning, and relieved to find more water ahead, lol. The corruption indicator on the top left is cool too.

I have no complaints. Amazing work!

Get out of here.

say hello to my little friend Uno reverse card | Sticker

The sprites and art is really nice. I would have liked it if there are bindings using the arrow keys as well since my left hand got tired as it was doing all the work.

Submitted(+2)

I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said, but I have to reiterate that the sprite work is really great
Taking hits breaking points of the trident was very cool as well

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Poppysicle and Coreoula worked really hard on the art for the game, we're glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+2)

Your art is insanely good, both the sprites and the title/victory screen are so impressive!

Submitted(+2)

If only cleaning Gura's dirty mind was so easy, lol

Really love the Sprites and Artworks in this one! After reading the other comments I don't really have anything to add xD Also had some stuttering the first time I went into the water and once more after dashing out of the water. Otherwise also realized that you can still move as Gura after the ending, since the sounds still do play xD

Developer

Yes, the freezing does happen then, but thankfully it only happens once. I was thinking people won't move anymore after the ending screen, but I was wrong apparently ^^;

Developer

We found the stuttering issue as well but didn't know how to resolve it, and only tested in Chrome browsers where the issues weren't as apparent. We're going to test in multiple browsers in the future and learn how to resolve these issues. Thank you for playing!

Submitted (1 edit)

If that helps: i played on opera. But as I said, the stuttering only appeared twice (once after entering the water for the first time and once after dashing out of the water for the first time)

The art is very beautiful, nice work!
As for the mechanics, the dash was the best part XD!

Developer

Thank you! It was our first time making a game together as a team, and for some of us the first time making a game ever. I'm really glad you liked the dash, we put a lot of trial and effort into it

Submitted(+3)

Loved the art and sound design of the game. The dashing proved to be a fun mechanic that mattered throughout the game. The game stutters a bit but it didn't take away from my enjoyment much. Good job!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing! We hope to solve the stuttering issue in our next game, we weren't sure what caused it this time ðŸ˜…. I'm  happy you liked the dash, it's my first time programming anything like this and wanted the movement to feel natural. I'm glad to see that we hit that checkbox!

Jam Judge(+3)

Very fun game!

Loved the spritework and the animations, as well as the music and sound effects. Good job!

Enjoyable platforming that can be evolved into something larger by using the already implemented dash and slide mechanics.

The corruption and health meters being incorporated into Gura's trident was very clever too!

Extra points for including a tutorial!

Some improvement suggestions:

- The play button in the title screen is kinda hidden. Adding some kind of glow animation may make it easier to spot.

- After the game end screen is shown, you can keep moving Gura in the back... or at least you can hear her walk and jump around. XD

- A "retry" or "return to title" button would be great, since there seems to be a counter of the times you've played the game.

Oh and I got a short freeze when first using W + shift to jump out of the water. It could be a shader compilation for some effect, perhaps?

Overall, fantastic work! I wish it was a longer game! XD

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for your feedback! We also wanted it to be longer, but we spent so much time working on the features that and art that levels got put on the back burner. If/When we ever get back to this we will defiantly work on those things and bring what we've learned into future games as well! Glad you enjoyed it.

The art and animations in this game are amazing. I think dash and slide should be combined, like someone else already said. Unfortunately I ran into a major bug where pressing W and shift while coming out of water crashes the game, and that seems to be a movement tech that's important to the game. Luckily none of the segments I played required it, but I had no idea what to do in the red gura room.

Great job though! Would love to see this fleshed out into a longer game.

Developer

Thank you very much. We streamlined the movement a bit, but we didn't change too much of the core movement since we aren't sure if it is allowed. We noticed the freezing, it happened for me personally when you enter and jump out of the water for the first time. We also added hints on the boss room, is it perhaps not enough?

Submitted(+2)

I ended up figuring it out after realizing the freeze wasn't actually a freeze and just a very long load time. I would've tried going up and sliding earlier but in my first playthrough I was afraid of it crashing lol.

So with that in mind I think that there still needs to be some kind of hint towards the slide being used as an attack. I know you have that for the doors, but maybe if you added some destructible boxes or something to slide through it could reinforce that. (that first slide tutorial is a prime spot for it imo)

Developer

Ahh... We thought that the corruption being only cleaned if you have the water power, then the wall being destroyed by the dash/slide will give enough incentive that "dash > destroys bad thing"

Developer

We think it might have to do with the browser your using to play it, the freezes that is. We appreciate you playing the game and thank you for the feedback! We'll be sure to take this into account going forward and our next game will be even better! :D

Submitted(+2)

Ok so it turns out that it was not a freeze and just a very long load time. The game seems to have quite a few of those (game start, entering water for the first time) so that's probably some kind of optimization problem? I'm on firefox.

I also found out after watching someone else play on chrome that Gura is supposed to have water falling off her when she's in the powered up state. That doesn't appear for me and I don't know if its because of my browser or my potato laptop.

After playing a second time I just wanted to say I really really like the movement in this game. Like if you made some speedrunning levels and turned this into something like a Sonic game it would go so hard.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

We talked about it in the team and have a theory that yes, firefox seem to cause more lag and freeze while chrome is doing better since it uses a lot of RAM. You are correct, optimization is probably one of the factor. Does the water effect still not appear on the second playthrough? And thank you for the compliment! We did think about doing that, but sadly we didn't have the time. But it was meant to be similar to a vertical style Sonic Game

Submitted(+1)

I'm gonna put both of my replies into one so I don't have to write 2 comments lol

Yeah the water effect still didn't appear so I didn't know when I was actually powered up. I ended up just speedrunning towards doors and guessing.

I get that dashing through doors and corruption being cleaned is supposed to clue you in, but it didn't really click for me. Cleaning the corruption on the stage didn't make me think about the slide as an attack really. The door was closer I guess but I just saw it more as "cleaning up" than attacking. I think maybe something else that might help is if the corruption in the game was also red to match red gura?

Developer

We tried to be subtle, but perhaps it was too subtle. We'll do better in cluing in the connection next time. Also, if we made the corruption red, it looks like blood.. so we didn't do that.

Submitted(+3)

The art and animations look amazing! I also was confused on what I'm supposed to do in the boss room since I couldn't attack and the room didn't have anything special in it. And with the controls I would also say less is more. The Dash and Slide could easily be combined. There wasn't any reason to do a normal dash when you are on the ground and I often forgot to hold the down button. Also I'm not sure if double jump was even needed since you had wall jumps too.

Developer

We updated the game so that there are hints on what to do. We also streamlined the control a bit more, but not as much as you suggested due to our original plan for more uses for the movements.

Submitted (1 edit) (+3)

Absolutely stunning spritework! Controls are a little weird, not quite a fan of using WASD with space and shift when mouse is not involved.
Can't quite tell what I am supposed to do with red gura as well.
I think you could also try to find some 8bit BGM to add in. Don't give anyone reasons to dock points from ambience, especially since you've already put so much work on visuals!

Developer

Thank you! We added sfx and bgm. Added hints and guidance throughout the level and Red Gura.
