Did you work in a team?
Aside from some minor assistance, I was the only developer.

Was the resolution a challenge?
Miraculously, all necessary game elements were able to fit within the resolution fairly comfortably. A larger play area could have made ghosts clump together a bit less, but it also might have made the game unmanageable. The only thing that truly suffered was the tutorial screens (and even then I managed to fit all game mechanics in there).

What did you learn?
I've done several gamedev projects before, but this is the smallest scale I've ever done in terms of mechanics. It helped me reconsider how to make a game interesting without necessarily adding many pieces of content to it. I started a bit late, but the extra time after dev also helped me experiment with UI and save files in a more in-depth manner than I had ever done before.

This was wonderful! I absolutely love the graphics, the ghosts are so cute right up until the moment they aren't, and that closeup is just fantastic

Gameplay is a lot of fun, and feels perfectly tuned for short sessions pushing for a new highscore. The tutorial screens are actually really good, and do a great job communicating mechanics without text :)

I love the little details that give a lot of juice - the screenshake, the change in movement speed when focussing the flashlight, the cues the ghosts give when they're about to strike - it all adds up to a really great feeling game to play.

I could see this mechanic being an absolute blast as a kind of on-rails shooter if you were ever to expand on it! Makes for a really fun little arcade experience as is, thoroughly enjoyed it :)

Thank you! I appreciate the in-depth feedback and am glad you liked it!

Wow! :D my score was 25 but I'm sure I could get better, I saw 2 ghost types are there more? the ghosts are too cute I don't want to hurt them, I died to my 2nd Isaac type ghost ^^ they just all came out at once! awesome game :)

Developer(+1)

There are only two types of ghosts, the regular one and the sleeper who looks almost identical until given a little scrutiny. My current max score on the web build is 62, although that's mainly because I have way too much developer insight (probably better than my previous jam game though: that one had a learning curve like a brick wall). I'm glad you like the ghosts and the game!

Nice idea for an arcade style game! Had fun finding the ghosts, reminds me of Luigi's mansion in a way. The audio didn't work for me using Safari on a Mac.

A fun little game, very polished for only a couple of days of work.

Nice little game and the idea is great, this can be little repetitive on a long session and need different events to change. The art is very goood and cute for this resolution ! Great job.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Some type of event/variance/extra variety probably would have helped the game have a lot more replay value, although this is admittedly more a polished up prototype than a game with actual meat on its bones.

Really fun game conceptually!  I always like the use of light as a weapon (a la Alan Wake), and I thought the graphics were fun and cute.  Nicely done.

I loved this game! A very fun gameplay. The art is beautiful and the game is very clean and polished. My suggestions for a future version: Music (to give more ambiance) and a backstory with levels and even bosses. I don't particularly like endless games.

Congratulations!

Great stuff, though in the end I had to join the ghosts, as they were too adorable. For pictographs, the tutorial was really functional.  A fun little game for sure!

I played this game while jamming (sabotage! I couldn't focus on developing!!! Nahhh just kidding. maybe.)

It's fun, and I love how the scope is small and yet you managed to make it fun. Teach me please. xD

Great job!

Developer

Hearing that you played my game while the jam was initially running is high praise, thank you! I mostly scoped the game so small because A - I mainly based gameplay on a somewhat novel mechanic that popped out of my skull and my desire to experiment with it in the context of a jam and B - I joined halfway through and wasn't even sure I'd be able to get the motivation to get a box sliding around the screen. Scoping problems are part of why I only ever join jams that are a week or longer: without those extra few afternoons of free time after gameplay dev I would have never gotten all those menus up and running (or some other minor polish and balancing I'm sure I added at some point).

Neat little game with a cool art style.  The goal was clear once you get going and the combination of sound and visual feedback when you knife the ghosts feels great.  I liked the retro feel of this too!

Congratulations on making this game !

I've played your game during a live that you can watch here :

I hope the feedback and live reactions will be useful to you. Keep it up !

Thanks for the video! It's always interesting seeing how people adapt to your game on the fly, great for getting impressions on how well you explain your mechanics and how well the mechanics explain themselves

Happy to help !

Lovely looking game. I struggled a bit with the instructions too and went back to play it again more successfully after reading the comments here. I think the mechanic works very well and I could definitely see this being expanded into a fuller game, combined with a few other mechanics. Great work!

Really cool game! Art is top notch and the concept is quite cool as well.

Fun, engaging and lovely art! I actually liked the tutorial manual/pages, tho I think it needed to be split up further. And likely presented gradually in game. I had some trouble figuring out I actually had to keep the mouse pressed to affect the ghosts, for some reason I was quickly tapping it instead. Anyway the mechanics are really solid, nice work!

Very cool art and fun to spot the ghosts with the flashlight! As you said it was hard to figure out how it all worked (I spent a minute or two slicing the ghosts with my knife as they just casually dodged away) but I was able to figure it out after reading comments here. I did read the tutorial beforehand but the stuff after the first page definitely gave me these vibes:

Overall fun experience! Good work!

Developer

Thank you! Tutorialization is definitely a weak point of mine, I have a nasty habit of giving too much information and too little text.

Submitted

It definitely doesn't have to be text - I just played this game for this jam and I think it is an excellent example of how to introduce new mechanics one at a time so the player learns how everything works: https://itch.io/jam/lowrezjam-2022/rate/1663086

fun and simple good job.

This was a fun little game, and the ghosts were cute.

Submitted(+1)

the art is just so good

Very simple, but the mechanics work well… too bad there’s nothing else to it, if you kind of roamed around this could be a nice mechanic to have on top of a scary exploration. Nice job considering your indication of the really small time invested. Good ROI for your time!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I never finished a game in such a short timeframe before (honestly the UI took more days than the gameplay portion). I put thought into ways I would theoretically expand it given more time, but I never considered a story/exploration focus (which is honestly a very nice idea thinking about it).
