  • I very much enjoy the instrumental choices in this particular track-- the penny whistle in particular was I think a very nice choice. There is clear effort to write to the theme of the competition, and within that scope I thought you had a nice variety of musical ideas that covered a good gamut of emotions. "Bubble Reef" personally stood out to me as the strongest composition of the lot-- it is at once beautiful and effervescent, and as mentioned earlier, the penny whistle absolutely shines here. Fantastic. The production overall I think could use a bit more balancing. The string samples tend to overwhelm your very nice woodwind writing at times, which is a shame, as a lot of those lines struggle to speak when they could otherwise shine! It is particularly noticeable on long held chords or notes in the strings, which goes to another suggestion which would be to use the framework of chords that you've developed here to create string lines that are a bit more like independent lines and less block-like, which would go a long way to solving this problem well before it gets into Reaper to be mixed. Another suggestion would be to be more aggressive about expressive tempo changes. I can clearly hear that you have a good musical sensibility, so try to imbue that not only into the note/harmony choices but also into the MIDI "performance" and you can get a lot more emotional resonance out of even stock MIDI sounds. I felt there were several sections that were begging for a rubato instead of the tyranny of the SMPTE click! :) The piano writing throughout also impressed me. I would love to hear some of that performed with live musicians as I think the subtleties of a human performance would add a lot of depth to your writing here. A beautiful submission and one that I think made some really smart choices, only really being held back by some minor production issues-- the addressing of which I think could really elevate this musical gem.

Description
Umi's Dream is an instrumental soundtrack with an added synthesizer. The imagined game of the same name is imagined to be a side-scrolling platformer with a focus on exploration and narrative.

Umi is a young girl, named for the ocean. Her late mother, a marine scientist, drowned during an expedition when Umi was a baby. Though Umi has no waking memories of her late mother, the two are united every night when Umi dreams.

One night, Umi drifts to sleep and dreams as always - but this time her mother is missing.

1) Umi’s Dream is the titular track for the game, featuring both Umi’s Theme and Mother’s Theme. It would be played on the game’s start screen.
2) Mother’s Absence is for an imagined cutscene at the very beginning of the game, when Umi fades into her next dream only to find that her mother is absent. The narrative idea then leads into the gameplay. Featured in this track are variations of Umi’s Theme, Mother’s Theme, and the first instance of the Ocean Theme.
3) Blue Dream is the track for the first level. As Umi begins to search for her mother, she is plunged into a vast and strange sea where she can breathe underwater. A variation of the Ocean Theme is the most prominent melody in Blue Dream, broken by another variant of Umi’s Theme.
4) Bubble Reef is a relatively energetic track for another level, in which Umi comes to a lively reef teeming with coral and schools of hand-drawn fish. In this imagined level, Umi has a lead on her mother’s whereabouts. Variations of all three themes - Ocean, Umi’s, and Mother’s - are present in Bubble Reef.
5) Umi and Her Mother is the track for the final cutscene of the game, in which Umi and her mother are reunited. Variations of Umi’s Theme and Mother’s Theme are present.

To create this OST, I first created the narrative idea of the game: the subject matter, the characters, the conflict, the genre of the game, etc. Once I had the game idea, I began by composing three themes: one for Umi, one for her Mother, and a third for the Ocean - where a bulk of the game would take place within Umi's dream setting.

With the themes written, I decided on the instrumentation and began sketching each track. Once each was sketched, I orchestrated the sketches into a full score. The notation entry was completed entirely in Finale. I then exported the MIDI tracks and imported them into Reaper, where I edited, rendered, and mixed the stems. Once the master track was rendered, I used Audacity for a final compression and spliced the tracks into their individual lengths and exported each as the final product.

The total runtime for Umi's Dream is 10:38.

Inspirations referenced include: Claude Debussy (Reverie, Cathedrale Engloutie), Spiritfarer, Abzu, Pikmin 4, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Finding Nemo.

Theme

Inside my world
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
Umi's Dream is related to "inside my world" in two major ways. First, the imagined game takes place entirely within one of Umi's dreams - in her head, her psyche, her own subconscious. Second, the narrative is about something greatly personal to Umi, which is her mother's death and how Umi mourns a mother she never knew in life.

Regarding the picture theme, Umi's Dream capitalizes on the nautical elements (the fish and the bubbles), the surrealism, the girl in pink and the joy on her face, and the bubble silhouette of the woman next to the girl.

In Umi's Dream, Umi is the girl in pink. Umi's Theme is composed to be spritely and childlike yet versatile to capture Umi's emotional journey. The bubble silhouette is thought to be Umi's mother, whose theme is composed to be tender and nurturing. Finally, the dream itself is represented by the Ocean Theme, which breaks away from the style of the other two themes in being more pad-like to represent the vastness of the ocean and the dream taking place.

The whole of the soundtrack leans into a "nautical" or seafaring sound (penny whistle, piano textures, string textures) combined with moments of ambient dream-like sounds and textures (melodies and pads on synth).

The composition is beautiful and it suits the theme well. Good job!

The writing style is very beautiful! You can definitely feel the influence of games like "ABZU" or Thomas Newman. For the story and artwork, the music is absolutely fitting. I read that you initially did everything in Finale: but the libraries aren’t from Finale, right? The woodwinds and piano sound very good, though the strings might be a bit too mid-heavy. I would have played a bit more with the dynamics if I may, although I'm not sure if the effect you achieved was intentional, as this type of mix could work really well in a platformer game, in my opinion. Overall, great job!

The libraries are a combination of Musio and Kontakt Factory. Thank you for listening and taking the time to give feedback!

Fantastic work! All the tracks have a nice vibe and they go well alongside the theme. Two things for possible improvement - voice leading and also sample quality. Otherwise, nice job here my friend :)

I really like the concept you have going here for the story, and you captured the dreamlike state of everything really well!

There is a real lingering sense of haunting and familiarity to this, that is not an easy task to accomplish! Hats off for the composition

Thank you so much! I appreciate it!

Great job on the OST, I loved Bubble Reef's bubbliness and Umi and her Mother was particularly pretty.

I think like others that some work next on humanizing a bit more the whole orchestration (I'm not great at it to be honest either) would come a long way in making it more pleasant as a whole, but don't take me wrong, this was super pleasant to listen to as it is. Awesome job!

Thank you for listening and for the feedback! I try to improve with each new project (as I think we all try to do), so having constructive and critical feedback helps me to do just that.

I’m super new to all this but I was able to pickup from my own mistakes on your track so we can say that we’re definitely learning as we go and that’s a great thing :)

Really nice composition and use of piano and strings! My only notes are that I think there could be some more variation between the tracks, I found the tracks to blend together since it was the same instruments used in very similar ways but that's pretty nitpicky and not necessarily a bad thing. There's also the reverb issue which other people pointed out, I think that would significantly help the mix and make it sound more full!

I really liked how dynamic these tracks were, they felt like they were moving and built up well. Umi and her Mother was beautiful! Great work!

Thank you for the feedback! I tend to overdo it with the reverb if I'm not careful, but I guess I was too careful with it this time around.

Parts of this entry reminded me of Hollow Knight (Bubble Reef in particular reminded me of Greenpath) which I appreciate, but this whole thing really felt cohesive, and the orchestration is fantastic. You nearly brought me to tears with some of those piano parts.
i agree with the comment below about a touch of reverb to make things a bit more wet, but otherwise, this is a serious contender for me. Well done!

Thank you for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Musically this is a really good soundtrack, there's a lot of emotion written into the composition and a good diversity of musical ideas. The nautical theme was well executed, I can envision the soundtrack playing beautifully to a surreal ocean world.

The mix however felt very dry,  a nice reverb to glue everything together and make the notes linger (not too much until it gets muddy though) would elevate the mix significantly. Reaper's stock reverb is not very good, there  are good free one like Dragonfly Reverb, MCharmVerb or Valhalla Supermassive (not a true reverb but it has some reverb presets that sound close enough).

Kudos for the score though, it was very impressive.

Thank you for the feedback, especially the plugin suggestions. Expanding my plugin library is actually one of the next things on my list, so I'm glad you mentioned it.

love this ost so much, bubble is my favorite good stuff dude!

A strong and well glued together soundtrack. The story of Umi and Her Mother was an honor to feel included in as I listened, you have a great way of story telling through music. Very good talent to have.

Thank you for taking the time to review Umi's Dream and for your kind words. I appreciate it.

You started by building a great narrative which directed your OST along the way, and it greatly helped with cohesiveness. I also appreciated said narrative and your interpretation of the theme, I have seen nothing like it yet. You nailed the nautical and dreamy feel. My favorite track is Bubble Reef, as soon as it started I knew it would be. Umi and Her Mother is a great closure to the adventure. Solid entry!

Good job on the composition, you have some nice ideas, the main thing to improve imo is the general quality and the playing, you might be limited by some plugins sound but the way to play some instrument of more important. The strings for exemple, the chords progression is good nothing to say but the way it should come of its not like playing synth pads, they need to breath, the piano playing  is also a little to stiff and quantized you can probably make it more humane it would be 2x better easily but other than that, good job !

Love this OST! “Umi and Her Mother” is my favorite. The compositions feel like they tell a story and create a really soothing and evocative atmosphere. Very interesting harmonies too. Well done!

This is so ethereal and calming, great job with this OST! The overall texture of the music is just very nice and soothing, my favorite is probably 'Blue Dream', it's beautiful and feels good to listen to.

Hey Jacob, love the work overall! Some great orchestration and song design going on. Hope to hear more from you another jam!

Such peaceful and amazingly put together tracks! I'm honestly surprised only a few people rated this, it's such a beautiful and meditative OST. The story of the game and representation of that in the songs are also really well done, and I can definitely feel Umi's confusion and fear in my favorite song from the OST "Mother's Absence" (not saying that the other tracks are bad in comparison tho, they all are amazing to listen to)!

Overall just some great atmospheric songs and I'm impressed by how well made your compositions are! I really hope more people see this because I think it deserves more attention. If you have the time, I'd also appreciate if you could check out my OST as well if you want.

That's all I have to say really, have a good day :D

Love it when a track tugs my heartstrings. Pretty and dreamy, yet bittersweet. Amazing work!!

These tracks are stunning! The instrumentation is delicate yet beautiful, and the motifs go a long way to make the pieces feel connected and cohesive. In particular, I really like the third track, Blue Dream, where I got lost in the dreamy pads and orchestration, floating through an ocean of my own creation. While the sounds you picked are beautiful, I think they could be performed with more articulation and dynamics, especially the piano. Overall, I'm incredibly impressed by your compositions, and I'll definitely be listening again on my own time. Unfortunately, I gotta go rate 600 other entries! :D
