- Get that old 80's drawn animation games. Movement could be tweeked a little, but other then that it's a very easy game to play. The art was good, music was clean. Very different take on the theme, but it felt more light then shadowy, Still a good take!

WASD movement, aim with mouse, and shoot with left mouse button. You are an apprentice alchemist named Merlin. There are angry monsters lurking in the shadows. You can mix potions that you find to light candles along your way. You can mix potions as you run to find the right mix to turn the angry monsters into happy monsters. There are 4 levels. You need to make 10 monsters happy in each level to win.
Extra Notes
All of the character animation was hand-animated traditionally on paper and then photographed frame by frame to bring it into the computer. The drawings were then colored in Adobe Animate.

Charming hand-drawn art, and fun gameplay!
I like how you have to manage keeping the light on. You can kinda tell when they're chasing after you, but its not certain to the player. I like that. It also made me feel good to know that just because I didn't get all 10 monsters, I didn't necessarily lose the level and could continue anyways.
I felt like I was fumbling around a lot with trying to get the right combo of potions (and remembering which combo does what), hoping to see the right color appear. I also felt like I struggled to remember which spell should be used on which monster. Since the colors popped mostly popped out to me at first, all I could remember was: purple sunglasses pineapple = purple spell, red rock thing = green spell, and then fire to melt the ice monsters.
also rad music choice :sunglasses
I'm really glad you enjoyed my game! Thank you for the kind words. I think in a future version of the game, I'll be able to take more time to explain each spell in a tutorial. If you'd like to check out how I made my game, I just posted a dev log to YouTube:
Simple yet charming game.
It is so awesome to see hand drown animations! (I know how hard it is to even make a simple run cycle)
I really like how you introduced the player to different mixes one at the time (also symbols and colors of the candles!)
You have made a really good choice selecting music for each level, they felt really fitting.
Although I miss few important sfx like shoot.
Overall a good entry!
Thank you so much! I hear ya about the sound effects. I want to make a bunch of zany SFX in future versions of this game. If you'd like to see how I made my game, I just posted a dev log to YouTube:
Such lighthearted fun! Hand drawn animations add so much soul and personality to everything, even the monsters are so cute, you want to make them all happy! Music fits perfectly to the overall mood. What a lovely entry, very well done!

Nice Game and nice Choice regarding the music pack! Concept also is interesting - for me there is nothing to critisize. :)

Excellent entry, a very simple but very effective concept, easy to learn but fun to play! The music is very groovey and also very fitting for the asthetic of the game. I'm particularly fond of the art direction, and I love that you decided to go through the process of using a traditional medium for the animations, it's not so frequently seen anymore so to see people in a game jam taking up the challenge warms my heart.
Great Job keep up the good work!

That music jams. really groovy. The gameplay is pretty clever. I like how the dark obscures the monsters, so you have to quickly switch out your potions to light a candle. Really clever. And the hand drawn style works well with the tone. Well done on getting that all within the time frame.

Great goffy music and liked the idea of mixing. It feels impossible to lose but a funny game.
It is awesome that you managed to hand animate all these in such a short time! GJ

Really cool concept as a game man! I love the handrawn animations and the music is really nice.
I would suggest maybe adding a little SFX when shooting if you keep working on it.
But really nice concept, of making monsters happy instead killing them.
Thanks for playing my game! And thank you for the kind words. I totally want lots of zany sound effects in this game. It's on my to-do list! If you'd like to see how I made my game, I just posted my dev log to YouTube:
the art is really good. I noticed there is no game over state on the health bar being depleted. On timeout it brings to the victory screen regardless of how many you made happy. The music is good. The concept is also good.
Thanks for playing my game! I totally had the game in easy-mode for the game jam. I turned off player death, it just felt more fun to run around with out dying. Things will be more difficult in future versions! If you'd like to see how I made my game, I just posted my dev log to YouTube:

As soon as I saw it was hand-animated I knew I would love it. Your art style is perfect for such a game, the monsters are so unique and cute and goofy.
Thank you! You are too kind! I'm glad you liked it!

Good ideas, well-implemented, good performance. I had a bit of trouble figuring out the potion system at first but i caught on. good job!
Thank you! Glad you liked it. I hear you on the potion mixing mechanic. I actually had trouble with it at first after I designed it, but it started to grow on me over the course of two weeks.

Wow! I really loved this. The second the music came on, I was absolutely bumpin' my head! The gameplay was fresh and interesting, and I really enjoyed how it was paced. Getting to the final level and using all three felt really good after warming up in the first three levels. I loved the art, sfx, music and general theme of the game. Great job :)
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I didn't know how difficult the final level would be. Glad you enjoyed it!

This was so cool! I also watched your other devlogs, love how much you use other art mediums in all of your entries!
Another Merlin game! Keen to try this out in the morning. QQ - any chance this was also inspired by the old flash game Merlin's Revenge?
