Its a fun little creature caretaking game. The fact that what you feed the dragon makes it change what it looks like is a really good addition. Its very easy to get stuck in a loop of not being able to feed the dragon unless you figure out the specific mechanics due to how mood works and the dragon not wanting food if it has low mood but that still decreasing the mood even on failure (e.g. at 22% mood).

The main things that would be able to be worked on post jam would be ux improvements. This is things like making the bars consistent in how they behave (either all filled = positive or all filled = negative) and making items consistent in how you use them or convey differences (currently some want to to hover and some want you to click but you dont know which is which and clicking for the hover ones does the same thing as the clicking for the clicking ones (aka making the item dissapear))

A very adorable game!
Cleaning is a mess (pun intended) to do.  AI need to spam it and it still stays very dirty. This bug blocked me from finishing the game sadly, but I've seen it work for others, and will blame it on the fact I always manage to break games :D

Developer

Thanks for you feedback. Glad you like our game beside it's issues.

Concerning your playthrough, I'm sure there is no bug. To wash him just grab the sponge and hover it over the dragon longer, don't click.  I also guess the mood of little dragon was low. He refuses everything under 25% mood. Try to raise mood first, by directly pet him after he slept as long as possible to reach mood 100%. Then wash him until 0% dirtyness. Always clean poop as fast as possible. Then you can feed him as you like.

Ah, it ws a skill issue, it looke dlike a drag an drop,, I didn't figure I could hold the item to clean or pet longe

The production quality is so high for a game jam. Really nice work! My only feedback is minor and probably pretty common at this point: the need bars not all working the same way (filled = positive vs filled = negative) can be confusing at a glance. But the game is great! It is simple but you can get lost playing it for a long time!

Developer

Thanks for your nice feedback. We already work on a better version we more consistent stats.

This is pretty much the perfect tamagotchi game right there. Intuitive controls, a very good amount of variety, excellent (and super cute) art & audio - you folks nailed everything. Okay, maybe not the innovation part, but that does not matter at all, because you’ve made a fun and very polished game which is already a big feat for a 72-hour jam.

I played the game after watching the Bernardo and Bu play it on stream and I was a bit afraid that I’m gonna be struggling, but I kept laser focus on on all stats and managed to get to the end without my dragon getting sick. I was glued to the game, never taking my eye off the bars and my dragon - it was all very engaging.

Excellent job, team!

And here’s how my dragon turned out - they grow up so fast! 🥹 image.png

Thanks for taking the time to play out entry and giving this nice feedback.

Great you managed to play through without problems. It was our plan to give it a little challange, so thats not to easy, and a little bit rewarding in the end.

Nice dragon you evolved there.

This is so cute, this is the final experience of a tamagotchi. As others said the UI could be improved, like the hunger bar that is 100% when the dragon needs food while other needs are 0 when needs action, also the “evolution bar” I noticed that only on the last part of the game, idk if is intended. Overall solid entry. Good job!

Thanks for your nice feedback. We are aware of the issues with ui and stats interpretation and have already planned to fix these problems if the jam is over. Really nice dragon you have there with a very lovely name XD.

How did you manage this in such short time ! It looks and feels amazing. My kid's been playing it for 30 minutes already. It might need some additional balancing, but in the scope of a game jam this is nearly impossible, there simply isn't enough time for testing. Very nice entry, top notch !

Developer

Thank you very much for that. It's great that you let your children play our game too, I hope they still had fun with it, apart from the somewhat difficult mechanics.

This is such a cute little game and the baby dragon is adorable. It gets frustrating sometimes when the dragon is far away from the cursor and gets stuck in a poop and sickness cycle since it can get hard to attend to all its needs fast enough. I got a very cool pink dragon at the end!

Developer

Thanks for your feedback. We are glad you like our entry. Little tip: the dragon get sick more likly the more dirty he is. So washing him gets you out the cycle, because you can wash him as long as you want and he is not tired. Tip two: the dragon gets dirty from stepping into poop, so cleaning poop immediatly can prevent him getting dirty in the first place.

Great game! at first is not very clear that you have to raise his mood to get him to heat something, and maybe the hunger bar should be reversed to be more intuitive, other than that it's an amazing game, graphics are cute and really polished (the UI with all the little icons is sooo professional, love it), audio is top notch too, really impressive entry guys!

Developer(+1)

Awesome. We are happy you liked it. Making stats of the dragon more readable is number one, on our post jam todo list. Thanks for your feedback.

Just to get my main critique out of the way first, I feel like it's tough to understand the dragon's needs and what affects what, after a few tries I think that I got the hang of it and got a nice white dragon with a big afro! :D

That being said, the art is beyond cute and the animations are spot on, the background also has a nice cozy feel to it so no complains there, nice job!

I'm left wanting more so maybe a couple mini-games here and there would take it to the next level, but can't complain on such a short gamejam.

Developer

Very nice of you. Thanks for your kind words. We will definitly work on the stats readability, as nearly everybody has problems with it.

Congrats Gordon and WTBasil! Such a cute cute game, could not have hit the theme any better!

The highlight for me was the attention to detail, everything felt cohesive, responsive and the audio feedback was perfect. <3

Maybe the tiredness value could be adjusted a little as it felt the dragon was a lil lazy.

Would be nice for the UI to be a little more clear and maybe even find a way for the dragon to ask for something specifically.

Amazing work team <3

Developer

Again, thank you for your nice words. I am totally with you, regarding the points you mentioned we have to work on. We are very happy you liked our entry.

After seeing more of this game and seeing how varied the end result dragons can get I had to update my rating.

Beautiful, beautiful work. <3

Developer

Very appreciated. <3

Once I figured out how to play properly, I really enjoyed the experience! The baby dragon is super cute, and the sheer variety of final dragons is astounding! It takes the idea of different final forms and knocks it out of the park.

However, there were a few readability problems in the game that made progressing impossible until they were worked through. At first, I thought the game had softlocked, because I couldn't do anything to progress. The Hunger Meter going down means he's fed, and 100% means he's very hungry. The meters are not totally consistent, because 100% Mood is a good thing.

This would be a nitpick normally, but when mood is low, you can't feed the dragon, so it looked to me like 100% hunger meant he was too full to eat anymore. This false understanding caused me to be unable to progress.

And it would have been a shame if I left it at that, because the game is so lovely to play through!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing our game and for the feedback. You are right, maybe it would be a bit better if the hunger meter would be similiar to the other progress bars to avoid missunderstandings. Maybe we will change it after the jam is over :)

OK, now I’ve figured out how to play properly, I went and replayed the game 4 times x)

I hope it’s not too much of a spoiler for others if I post my first result:

Though my fav was the one I got after feeding him only cotton! :3 So cute and plumpy!!

Overall, I really enjoyed the game, and will probably replay a few times more to see more of the “base” dragon forms as well (I feel like I figured the way combos work visually so mostly curious about base ones now).

The art is fantastic, it’s super cute, animations are adorable as well; the way lil dragon stretches his neck a little, for example, was so precious. I loved playing with him and taking care of him ^v^

The gameplay of finding out different combinations and base forms is very engaging and fits the theme super well!

I liked the sound effects too, quite adorable! I have to say it’s impossible not to rate audio as I need to check all the categories here to submit my vote. I can rate 1 as you said music is not yours but other audio is by you so it becomes a bit complicated.

In terms of nitpicks:

  • I didn’t realize right away that I need not to just click on clean/pet function and click on dragon and be done, but actually hold it there for a while. Especially since click-click works with food and medicine. I feel like it could be helpful to specify somewhere?
  • When the dragon decides to go to sleep, at first there is not visual indication, but you can’t interact with him anymore, because in reality he has already started his night time routine. Maybe adding some visual effect that shows he is getting ready for sleep would be helpful, so this aspect is not confusing ^^

What else…

Really liked the way main menu is presented, with a little clicker mini game incorporated in there. All the food items and their little animations also look fantastic.

And, I noticed each time it was a different total amount of foods required for evolution. Or is it simply timing? Probably not, as when I couldn’t feed my dragon, it obviously wasn’t growing up (I waited a long time then, I think). So I am a bit curious what is the threshold for evolution (maybe it depends on food, how much does he need?)

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for taking the time to play our game extensively. We are very happy you like it that much.

You could split audio rating into sound effects and music if you like, and maybe give one or two stars for sounds, but no problem if you give 1 star for the audio category.

Considering your nitpicks, I am totally with you, some mechanics definitely should be explained, maybe with a small tutorial, but we did not have enough time for that. Also some icons popping up over your dragon could help understanding the state of it better. Thats totally valid critics, Noted for post jamming.:)

The clarify, careful spoiler alert:

Each food has different weight or mass, but you always have to reach the same total mass to evolve your dragon. At the top of the screen is a very small progressbar indicating your total progress, in case you didn't see it. So the number of eatables to feed to reach the end can vary, assuming you only feed one kind of food. No timing or timers are involved to reach the end.

I’ve started playing your game, drawn in by a pretty cover, but can’t rate it yet because I couldn’t experience it in full:

As I understand, 100% hunger means that the monster is very hungry, right? But mine refused to eat anything after first 3 foods I gave him.

So, after that Hunger line reached 100% for me, it stayed that way for a looong time. I waited patiently, took up a book I am reading, and waited, but each time I tried giving him any of the foods again, he was all like NOPE. NA-AH. NO.

Do I just need to wait some longer time before I can feed it again? But if he is very hungry (100%), why doesn’t he want to eat anything? :(

I’ve rebooted the game and after 7 foods this time encountered same issue again. My dragon only sleeps and walks around and sleeps again and refuses to eat. Seems like it doesn’t get dirty anymore either.

Developer(+1)

Don't worry, the mood of your little dragon was probably too low  ( he refuses to eat if his mood drops under 25% or so) .  Just pet him for a while and he will eat again.

Thanks for your comment and have fun 🙂

Thank you, I’ll try again ^v^
