It´s a very wholesome game. It is very calm, positive and motivational. Monstruo is a funny word creation. The little monstruo is adorably designed and has a cute voice over. I like the mini games, they are a good addition to the overall gameplay. Impressive that you made all by yourself, well done!

Btw: the intro and everything else worked flawlessly :) (sorry for posting on the wrong page first ^^° I guess I was too excited)

Developer (1 edit)

Don’t worry about which page you posted in, I can still see it! <3 Was just busy with work (especially since I spent ~4 watching stream instead of working xD) and didn’t have time to get to more recent comments yet!

And thank you for your sweet words, I am happy you enjoyed the game and thanks for the compliment about voice over :^)

Ah I was sad to see you deleted that comment! And I already wrote a separate reply xD : Thank you! I am glad intro worked for you. It really is a hit or miss (and that’s why I couldn’t figure out how to fix it so it works 100% of times!) And I can’t take credit for the word monstruo - it means “monster” in Spanish, but I really really like it and think it sounds cute :)

Such a cute little game. Everything is included, Cute and fun audio all made by yourself, as well as some really nicely drawn art. The music fits well, it makes the game entertaining while you're not aware of its presence.

Also. How did you manage to get this all done in 72 hours of game jam? Absolutely phenomenal. Super well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you ^^ I worked with the engine I am more familiar with to save time and it helped a lot :) Drawing and testing probably took the most time honestly!

My happiness increased indeed! This game gave me such a warm and fuzzy feeling throughout, it almost felt like ASMR.

I loved the art, the voice acting (lovely accent btw), the ever so slightly eerie but still relaxing music. The mini games are great, the length of the game is just perfect. It’s so good to see that you’re advancing your skills with each game and getting more creative with an engine that is fairly limited compared to others (I’m in a similar shoe with Construct).

Really nicely done Kanity, keep these gems coming!

Developer

Glad to hear it! ^^

I know RPG Maker MV has somewhat of a bad rep(?) but really enjoy using it and it does offer a lot of possibilities for creativity :)

Never heard of Construct before! Maybe I should give it a try too (I like trying diff ones!)

Submitted(+1)

100% agreed. Any engine that is more beginner friendly then others (RPG Maker, Construct, GameMaker, ClickTeam Fusion, etc) is going to get a bad rep from some people who encounter a lot of wonky games made by beginners with that engine. A spurious correlation.

I found that getting experienced with such an engine (and it’s limitations) will turbocharge your development speed, which is exactly what you want if you want to focus on game design and trying out things quickly. Maybe you’re doing a gamejam, turning a sticky note into a prototype, or working on a bigger project but doing iterations instead of making big plans.

(Damn, I’m rambling on about this a bit, maybe I should turn this into a blog post or something :D)

Developer

Maybe, I would like to read a blogpost on this theme :) Personally I am not really a programmer and being able to make games w/o much or any coding is ofc super helpful and liberating for me, while still encouraging to learn more gradually ^^

This game is amazing ! Well done. I really love the voice acting, it is so comfy and suiting. Very well made and I think you should be quite proud ! Simple but effective. I can't wait too see more from you. Also, RPG maker? Really? That is so brave ! I can now point at your entry to tell people that the engine doesn't matter one bit, as long as heart is in it. Simply splendid !

Developer

Aww thank you!! ^v^

I like trying different engines but RPG Maker MV is definitely my “comfort” one, and I like doing completely different projects in it (and pixel graphics is my favourite style!:))

Wow. It is so impressive you managed to do this all by yourself.

From the very start, the game sets up a really interesting and cozy vibe. Opening cutscene worked flawlessly for me, but I would have liked that the music was playing along side it.

The cutscene art was really beautiful and perfectly sets the stage for the game.

I thought the use of the color gradient over the visuals was nothing short of genius. It almost makes me think that the whole game is a dream where the character is self healing.

The sounds.. AH my heart just melted. nomnomnom

My favorite minigame was the kitchen one. Maybe this was an engine limitation but, I felt the movement was a little janky so I didnt enjoy the other games as much as the kitchen one.

Really impressive entry. I hope you're really proud of what you created.

..the air feels fresh after playing this beautiful game.

PS (forgot to mention): I was a bit confused around the level up mechanic as I fed one of each foods, played then listened but then I had to give them loads more food before they leveled up. I dont think there is anything wrong with that but it wasnt immediately clear they needed so much food.

Developer

Ahh thank you for such a nice and long comment! And for your support during the stream too :)

The intro movie does have music in it, so if it didn’t play, it means it’s another bug with intro :’)

Also glad the gradient worked out so well, it was a spontaneous idea and I am happy it worked!

I feel like movement is more janky with the mouse… But anyway yeah, I don’t much control movement in this engine & I think it might be a bit slow in WEB version (like the game, is a bit more laggy).

And yeah, on topic of food: at first you only needed 5 points to proceed, but then I added more Listen voicelines, and also was worried about players missing something, like a mini game even, so decided to up it to 10 points; but the line about trying more food stayed ^^’’

Thank you for playing!! I am glad you enjoyed <3

It warms my heart to see a RPG Maker entry on this gamejam, and a very cute and cozy one to show the versatility of that game engine, overall nice work!

Also, did you record all the audios for this? That's very impressive and very well done, I was not expecting something like that.

The mini-games were also a nice add, I wish the lamps where more indicative if they were on or off, the whole level overall felt really dark but nothing that spoiled the experience for me.

Keep it up, nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you ^v^ RPG Maker is the one I am the most familiar with and it’s fun to try and make different “genre” of things in it~

And yes, all the audio is recorded by me :) It was very fun to do!

Considering the lamps, I wanted to make it a bit harder as that mini-game is easy at its core, but I agree it will be good to make an aura of light around the lamps that are on, definitely will update it when I have time after jam <3

Love this! the audio is top notch and the overall mood of it is really cozy, the amount of polish on this cute game is impressive for a single person to do in 72 hours, good job, really!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, that’s very sweet ^^ I am glad you liked the audio and the atmosphere :)

I must admit that audio here is very special (but in positive sense), it’s also nice to have some different mini games according to Monstruo’s level. I think it’s a good game to try.

Maybe some music could be a bit happier, but assume that it’s chosen to show the sadness of main character at the beginning. I haven’t encountered any major bugs, except last game when the counter for recipe steps were showing 3 for further ones.

I’m very impressed that you were able to put a RPG Maker game (I assume it is) as a WebGL app (I had some experience with XP to VXAce versions and I didn’t know there is possible).

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Thank you for playing! And for reporting a mistake, I’ll look into it! >_<

I have to say there’s something with my music writing skills that makes my melodies always turn out sad or anxious or scary, even when I try to make them upbeat. But yeah, usually it works with the games because they also turn out that way (I guess that’s my creative curse).

And yeah, it’s an RPG Maker MV game, maybe they changed something but exporting to Web wasn’t that hard at all, the only problem is that it is guilty of NOT exporting important files and then crashing, so you have to identify which file was overlooked by the engine and manually add it to the folder before making a ZIP out of it ^^

I really enjoyed the themes of this game! It was a clever inversion, the little creature was taking care of you, instead of the other way around. I felt the game communicated what it wanted to say through every aspect that it had.

An issue I found was that the spoken audio peaked in some spots, especially at the start. I would suggestion playing with some volume/gain settings on your recording set up to make sure all of your highs and lows are being picked up clearly.

Developer(+1)

I am glad you liked it! And thank you for the notes on audio, I’ll take it into account ^^

Audio and art of this game are great! Nice work on minigames and the overall mood of the game that (at least for me) is kinda a mix of chill and disquiet.

Good job!

Developer

Thank you ^^ I like the way you described the mood. Somehow all my games seem to turn out that way xD

A wholesome game with cute little characters and cohesive art; My only criticisms being to turn down the gradient filter a tad as it occasionally makes it hard to see and some UI elements could be made easier with a symbolic HUD system e.g. happiness meter/level. For me the sound effects were stand out, leaving me amused and happy. As well, the music has a wistful but melancholic air to it that fits really well with the games theme of a slump.

I had fun playing the mini games especially the cooking one and loved how, as they went along, they became more complex. I noticed how the game was analogous to the small steps required for pulling oneself out of a mental tailspin. Turning on lights being a big accomplishment, cleaning up to live in a better space, and finally managing to cook a real meal instead of subsisting on quick options and snacks.; This evolution is also reflected in the words of affirmation, feeding options and the eventual goal to go outside. Very subtle but effective, great job!

Developer

Thank you, I am happy to see the idea of the game well understood and details noted <3

And thank you for criticism also, I’ll take it into account. I’ve noticed myself that text is not very comfortable to read at times but tried to solve it with text colour which it seems didn’t help at all ^^’ I’ll try to make the gradient less vivid or text boxes more solid.

Glad you liked audio too, I had fun voice acting all the sound effects :)
