How does your game represent "Power"?
Bots 'n' Batteries uses the theme of power in a couple core mechanics, player health, and special weapon charges.

The player's health constantly drains over time and can only be replenished by destroying enemies and picking up the batteries they drop.

The player's special weapon charges constantly over time and can bank up to 4 shots. The charge rate is dependent on the amount of player health "power" they have collected from enemies. The more power, the faster the special weapon charge!

Nice job, would love to have more gun types and abilities

Thanks for the feedback! We're looking to add a couple features after the jam and these are excellent suggestions!

The original design was considerably bigger and we quickly found out we had to reduce the scope. :)

Fun game! Love the presentation here, its got a great artstyle. some settings on mouse sensativity I think would go a long way, and then maybe a laser sight for the reticle

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and providing feedback. We'll have to see about adding a few QOL options and these are excellent suggestions!

Really fun game - great visuals with distinct style, effects really pop, gameplay feels satisfying. Camera being locked to mouse felt a bit dizzying though, would love to play it again :)

Developer(+2)

Thanks for playing and providing feedback! After the jam were going to add some fixes/features based on some of the common themes shared by you super awesome people! :)

This was the most fun I've had with any of the jam submissions so far! I got a serious case of the "one mores" and couldn't move on until I beat the boss and got a run that I was satisfied with. There are a lot of small design considerations that go into making an action game that's this irresistible, and you clearly know the recipe for that secret sauce.

Having the enemies spawn in designated and clearly marked locations makes the waves feel fair, and grouping those spawn locations together was a stroke of brilliance, as it created zones of higher risk and reward. Destroying the bots right as they spawn makes it so the batteries drop in a tight cluster for easy farming, but going to retrieve them is risky because an enemy could spawn right next to you without warning. The special shotgun blast attack encourages risky play as well because of the wide spread. It felt great to melt the boss' HP with 4 close-range blasts and then retreat back to safety. The camera's zoom level was also ideal for reading the action, and it subtly teaches the player the optimal distance for engaging enemies.

As far as presentation goes, the visuals were fun and distinct, like something out of a cartoon from the early 2000's. I appreciate that the UI elements occupy a small space- it must have been tempting to make them bigger because they're really stylish looking. Also, the music never got boring or repetitive even though I played for a good while. It does a great job setting the mood of the game and keeping the excitement up.

I don't have many issues with this game, but I'll say that the feedback for taking damage could be more clear. A prominent sound effect and some screen shake would do the trick. Also, making the camera pan based on cursor placement was a good idea, but the effect is disorienting and could be toned down a bit.

I'd love it if you dropped a downloadable Windows build, because I'll absolutely be revisiting Bots n' Batteries and the browser build's performance gets a little crunchy when the action gets hectic. Really great stuff, I had a blast with this one!

Thank you for playing and sharing your most excellent thoughts! We just wanted to make something super small and polished and it makes our day that you can see those design decisions in the gameplay!

With regards to feedback and standalone builds, we're going to add a more polish, a couple new features and add standalone builds after the jam! You've reinforced a few of those decisions with your feedback, so than you for sharing!

First bullet hell game i have seen in the gam so far! and it plays super super smooth, also all the enemy bullet designs were nice, and all the art in general was really well done.

For how simply this handled (I only pressed wasd and just held down left click the whole time) I really enjoyed shooting enemies and dodging bullets -- love a good bullet hell game! BGM was really catchy too :)

A solid entry in this genre!  The sound design and music in particular very impressive, also appreciate the nice particle effects on projectiles and enemies being destroyed.  All around it’s a flashy game and fun to play.

Fun Game! Hard, but fun. It still felt fair. I felt like if I died it was my fault and I could have avoided it. Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and commenting! We try not to take any cheap shots at the player and give plenty of room for mastery!

This was heaps of fun! The sound effects mesh together so well and it is so satisfying to weave through enemy fire. I love how the sprites pop out of the environment, very readable which is hard to get right in bullet hell games. Great job!

Thank you for playing and sharing this feedback! It really makes our day that you had a good time!
