How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
We made a puzzle platformer about being an electrician in a spooky old manor. Turn on lights to banish the ghosts. All original art and music and sfx made to gameboy specs, including one music audio track ducking for the sfx! we love this jam, thanks for having us!

Wow! That was really clever! The art is proficient and charming. The mechanics are intuitive and a lot of fun to use. The gothic soundtrack fits the atmosphere perfectly. Good job on the sound cancelling; it sounds great!

The door opening sound is a little loud. It's also possible for the ghost death sounds to stack on each other and become quite loud (I found this out on level 2-3).

The portrait changing in the light is such a good detail!

The crouch-down look is much appreciated.

Fantastic! Great work!

Great and fun storytelling !! Fresh gameplay ! Good music and pixel art !!
The most impressive thing is to leave the mansion in reverse with the truck !

i would like more puzzle, and more complex one !

Developer

Pleased you got to the end! It was a lot of fun to make - we'd love to make it even bigger and more complex.
Thanks for playing!

This was beyond amazing! I have little to say on this. I usually write longer-form reviews, but what can I say when everything on display is just right and very skilled? The graphics remind me of Castlevania a little bit and have a decent amount of variety to them - the intro scene is gorgeous. The music reminds me of The Messenger.

The controls, it's understably hard to get a handle on them at first due to the ambition of the game vs the gameboy limitations. Fortunately, everything is designed with that in mind, so at no point beyond the point of getting used to it all does it become a hindrance.

The puzzles are simple, but they're just fantastic. I really like how action packed they are. Puzzlers aren't really my favourite genre, and yet I had a lot of fun committing wire robbery then running and jumping away from the ghosts so I can quickly place the wires where I need them to be.

Awesome game. Definitely continue this should you want to.

Incredible game! Super fun and creative concept. The shadows were an amazing piece of detail, loved it!

Amazing design. I had some issues with the camera and the enemy positioning, but nothing that I couldn't handle. The controls also felt a little clunky; perhaps using UP to jump and J and K to manage the cables would have felt more natural. The progression is really well-thought, and the art and music are outstanding. Great game!

Visually, it’s very good, especially the parallax effect on the character’s shadow. Mechanically, it’s interesting, but I would be careful with the position of the ghosts in areas where the player doesn’t have 100% visibility, like in level 2-2, where I died as soon as I fell from the platform straight onto the ghost’s head.

The camera moving down when crouching is a good addition, but given how the levels are designed, it would make more sense to be able to look up as well. Regarding the cables, I think they could use a bit more highlight, maybe 1px of the lightest color in your game as a rim light, because I felt that the main logic is the construction of the cable paths and not necessarily finding them on the map. Along with this, I believe a more advanced puzzle construction in the connection between the cables would be more interesting, such as being required to pass through fuses or not being able to cross cables to avoid short circuits, all of this combined with what you already did to turn on the lights so the ghosts don’t hurt you.

But for sure, the game is well-rounded and enjoyable to play. I think that by tweaking those little things I mentioned, it would be a game I would definitely play to the end. Congratulations.

Thanks for playing! Glad you enjoyed it. Useful feedback too. We did want to add a few features like the ones you've suggested, but just ran out of time.

Really well made game, I loved the dad jokes. it gave me chills!!!! Great game!!!

I found a little bug where I was placing the wires one cell under the selected one (level 2-1), also the jump felt a little stiff but for a jam it is really polished, Good Job!

A fun(ish) game until the courtyard, I died twice having completed the circuit lol and it was just too much effort to have to do it a third time and no fun to repeat, it's a great idea, but a little clunky in execution.
However, I love the concept, Love the graphics, you've got good audio, humour and good atmosphere

It's an impressive game! It's beautiful, sounds are good and the gameplay is pretty solid. Maybe the platform aspect can be improved a little, some jumps are a bit tough, but everything else is good!

Great work!

Solid game with a nice mix of puzzle and platform. The music is a real plus, but all the electric puns take the cake. :]

I wish there was some kind of score keeping, because I spent quite some time rewiring some levels for more efficiency.

Two small bugs I encountered:

  • when crouching, the camera gets down, which is useful in some situations, or could be if the circuit mode adapted to that new camera position which it does not. :/
  • when pausing the game with circuit mode while a phantom is dying, that phantom comes back to life, technically making them an unundeaddead.

This one is insanely cool, fantastic job on capturing that spooky atmosphere. The gameplay is so creative! A lot of passion went into this!

Really super cool game to play. Captures the style and feel of a GB game, music and graphics are great. The controls where quite confusing to keep track of to wire, move, not move, change wire .... haha.. but I got the hang of it in the end! Great puzzles to work out.

Super fun and creative game, I absolutley love the art style, and the gameplay is very fun. The music and cutscenes go really well with the rest of the game and I love all the electrical jokes and skeleton dialog. Can absolutely tell that a lot of time and effort went into making this. Platforming and movement feel weirdly good for a puzzle game.

pretty cool game

thanks for playing!

The graphics being pre-rendered definitely sell the game alone
Makes this feel REALLY authentic I love this one alot!

Definitely a fun experience, The art is absolutely the highlight of the game and the audio is pretty good too. Gameplay wise it's pretty fun, my only complaint with it is that it felt lopsided towards platformer than puzzle, I didn't really feel like I was using the other wires compared to the basic horizontal flat wire but it wasn't that big of a deal saying the platforming feels really nice. Maintenance worker fixing a haunted house isn't a really a crazy new idea but it's well executed and is fun which is what you want for a game (unless you are making a rage game I guess) also talking to all the skeletons is a funny bonus for exploring the stage.

Overall a really good game

Very great job guys! One of my favorite games of the jam! It felt "too detailed" to me to match the GameBoy soul. I was also a bit frustrated to see thin platforms that still have full tile collision. But these are the only reproaches.

I had a bug in world 2-2 where I wasn't able to place tiles (they instantly moved to the one on the right), and even switching modes/moving the player didn't do. But, well, game jams :)

Developer

thanks!

yeah, that glitch with the wires seems to happen when you enter circuit mode whilst moving. something with the camera. and you're totally right about the thin platforms!

Wow! This is actually one of the highest ratings that I have given to any of the games I have played so far! Please forgive my poor gameplaying skills! But I actually featured your game in my livestream review:

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for the lovely comments!
Music and SFX by Pete Sperring, art by Rob Glenister (we both work at Wob Wob Rob) and coding by Daniel Servante. We're all audio designers learning new skills!
You see credits if you complete the game, but we ran out of time to get a proper options menu going with credits. Once judging is done we'll revisit and put in the features that we ran our of time to do.

Thanks so much for playing, and well done on getting so many entries on stream. Really cool!

Developer(+2)

thanks mate glad you enjoyed the game, pete and rob smashed it with the visuals and audio for sure! just had a go at your game too thats pretty addictive, will be streaming playing through a load of games from the jam this week myself so will feature yours on that. nice one!

Thanks! Send me a link to your stream when you go live - I'd love to watch that :)

Also, our instructions might not have been very clear! You need to toggle between "movement mode" and "circuit mode" by pressing SELECT to work the puzzles. If you fancy having another go, we'd love to hear what you think of the whole game!
